The furore over Anthony Albanese obtaining Qantas upgrades, arising from Joe Aston's just-published The Chairman's Lounge, might be seen as small beer, as "scandals" go.

But it raises suspicions, justified or not, in voters' minds about decision-making. If big corporations are so cosy with politicians, are the politicians more likely to lend them sympathetic ears?

Integrity is vital to trust. It didn't pass the integrity test for Mr Albanese to have accepted upgrades from Qantas, especially for personal travel, when he was transport minister in the former Labor government, overseeing regulation of the airline.

After dodging for days – he said it took a long time to check his records – Mr Albanese finally denied ever contacting then Qantas chief Alan Joyce (or other executives) to request upgrades. But, it will be asked, did a mates network mean he didn't need to?

Christ on a bike! Where's this righteous indignation coming from? "If big corporations are so cosy with politicians, are the politicians more likely to lend them sympathetic ears?" Hello? Was someone born yesterday?

The Scott Morrison Liberal govt incentive to join AUKUS and have a nuclear-powered submarine capable defense arm has taken its next step, with a study now in place to have a suitable port and defence facility built in sand groper country WA.
It will be called the Henderson Defence Precinct south of Perth.
Haven't heard much from 1 term albo on this, but he is slow in the brain department, so sure he will jump on the wagon and try and take some credit before the next election.
South Australia will have a facility as well.

I don't watch TV.
But, I did not include all details of the facility in my post. I actually work for the company that will facilitate and assist with the Henderson dock yard design and eventual EPC works.
Nothing i said regarding the history was in error just not fully detailed, but with your being nice I'll accept your help so others are well informed. It will be avery long term project. Providing dry docks and floating maintenance areas are huge civil undertakings.
Thank someone that Scomo had the knackers to agree, with lots of lefty crying and complaining, to the move forward with investment with Britian and the USA in our national defence.

That seems militarily obtuse. Placing the bases for Australia's submarine defence as far away from any possible foreign threat as possible? Maybe the SA facility will be for R&M but tactically, the west side of Cape Range would save over 800 miles of sail time and access to deeper water.

I am reading that Henderson is described as a 'maintenance' facility, so I assume that it's not like the air force, where they are on the ground and take off when a threat is detected. Maybe the submarines will be roaming on a rotational basis?

I'm not a submariner but maybe a member more familiar with the 'silent service' can opine.

I would put my money on that the facility will be open to all members of AUKUS and their submarine fleets. This is a joint venture and the AUKUS fleet will work together as team. They are nuclear powered and can stay out of port for a long period. Most likely sniffing around the South China sea.
Long way off yet till that happens. I think SA will build the subs.
On the other side of the coin the large distance, being mainly in the south region of Australia, from any perceived hot spot may mean it's harder to get to them by any enemy.
