Boxed wine
Boxed wine
Mrs tam's gone through her allowance of NZ Marlborough Pinot Noir already so she suggested the boxed wine alternative to the daily red and being able to keep the lights on.
Knowing that the boxed red isn't 'true' wine, what's our forum's sommelier's take on best bang for the buck for red plonk in a box?

Re: Boxed wine
It appears Boxed Wine is the real thing according to people who write about it . Believe it or not it is up to the consumer.
Re: Boxed wine
No wine snobbery here. I was introduced to 'cask' wine in the country that claims to have invented it. I'm not a purist and anyway, it's for Mrs tam and the good of the household finances.
Looks like the first place I pass at 5 pm today gets my business. I used to buy it at Makro in Pattaya. Does the local branch have it? Big C?

l'll have to consult with me olde mates under the 'West Swan Bridge' in Midland, Perth. They were conisuires of "Wobbla" in "plagons". The boxed red wine casks had em knackered!

Your olde mates, not you.
If it knackers Mrs tam, it's all good.

Re: Boxed wine
Villa Market has a good section of boxed wine and bottles starting at 299 baht.
The Chilean Cab. Sav. Is usually a good bet.
Had a cracking bottle of Spanish Temprinilo from VM yesterday. Was 699 baht but was a Xmas treat to myself followed by another bottle of red and two bottles of white (between 3 people)

Re: Boxed wine
I broke a house rule and grabbed two plastic bags of red from the tawdry north side supermarket formerly known as Tesco Lotus.
Shameless. That's what I am.

Wine snobbery has already been addressed. Thanks.jackspratt wrote: ↑December 25, 2022, 6:43 pmThat rather depends on where you are buying from, and whether it is actually wine.
A lot of what you can buy in Thailand isn't.

Re: Boxed wine
Only had em knackered because they could not 'bulk handle' a cask of red as fast as a plagon (flagon) of rough red from the Guilford Tavern!

Re: Boxed wine
My take on the subject is that if it tastes OK, has a suitable percentage of alcohol and doesn’t kick like a mule next day then if it isn’t actually pure wine but has various ingredients that include grape juice then I don’t complain, my preference is Mont Clair at about 1000 per 3 litres it’s flavour is adequate and being in a box has a great shelf life after being opened.tamada wrote: ↑December 25, 2022, 2:49 pmMrs tam's gone through her allowance of NZ Marlborough Pinot Noir already so she suggested the boxed wine alternative to the daily red and being able to keep the lights on.

The real test is if you like the taste if you do then the price is not really relevant.
I have had wines that were much more expensive than others that I would only use for cooking.
So my advice is buy a few different boxes, keep them relatively cool and at worst you will have nice ingredients for some excellent cooking, at best you may have a very merry new year.
The only thing I would say is don’t buy from the liquor shop near to immigration for anything but cooking, they either have poor heat control or buy very outdated stock. They have good prices on spirits but the wine I tried was almost too bad to use in cooking.

Re: Boxed wine
We've tried Mont Clair before when it was pretty much the only box wine by available. Was very acceptable but I recall a heated debate on ThaiVisa with the wine snobs calling it fruit juice. There were differing opinions as to why it was so cheap. I recall reading it was imported in bulk from SA as "fruit juice" and repackaged locally which enabled it to escape import duty. No idea what the truth is but never had a bad box.
