We will be staying near the bus station, have an evening free and would like to try a local Isaan specialty.
What meal/dish would you recommend to try and where would you send us to taste it?
thank you very much

Walk down to the train station/ night market, very short walk away. choose from the many food venders in stalls surrounding picnic tables . Cheap good food. No isaan meal complete with-out stick rice and papaya salad. Go out and get drunk in one of the many bars with-in walking distance. After your all bagged up! Get some noodle soup off the street,on the walk back to the room. That is isaan staple meal.

Sorry forgot to recommend salt crusted bbq fish served to go with papaya salad and sticking rice. Just look for the smoke of the grills.

First of the 2 night markets on the main road, there is a fried chicken place in front of the kasikorn ATM, its a Hatyai chicken stall
there is also another fried chicken place in the night market across the street, right in the center, this is a good place too, 12 baht for 1 piece, all they sell is fried chicken and rice.
the 3 staples are som tam, khao niao, and hot chicken (fried chicken)
dont forget the coconut juice in the bottles, its fresh.
