but you'd have to wonder if the people coming in might not get "infected" with the freedoms within HK...
Yep.

There was a lot of talk about this even before the UK gave it up. The fact that so many Chinese on the mainland would be influenced by what happens much differently in Hong Kong -- and the idea that they would want some of that if they ever got a chance to see it and experience it. I'm surprised that the CCP has allowed the two separate societies to exist this long (but they do get financial benefit from it).

China, great country great culture great ppl. Smart ppl also. And did i already mention positive and hardworking?
Just look at the great positive influence Chinese immigrants had and have in kther countries. Look how greatly the Chinese imigrants have integrated in Thailand and became a part of Thai society and the positive influence Thats something the expats will NEVER achieve. Look at Singapore.
China wants its piece of the cake, not crumbles handed out and dictated by other countries like America. But China dont want the whole pie, thats just scaremongering.
If China can get influence in African countrkes and islands and other marginalized countries, its only bc these countries are overlooked by western countries. Instead of calling countries "shitcountries", it would be more wise to be more friendly to other countries. So the growing influence of China is only natural and right, and partly bc the west doesnt invest or care too much.
As a wordlleader, to call China "thieves" and other slurs, its good for the rascist folks at home, but will be deeply remembered by China, and a lot of other countries, how America bullies other countries.
China, come on, dont be afraid, try to understand, they are growing and developing, if we can be friends with murderous thug countries like Saudia Arabia, we also should give China a warm welcome.
Look at how greatly Chinese immigrants have integrated into Thailand, seriously? It is the wealthy Chinese Thai families that control Thailand and the average Thai citizen keeping them poor and having you jump through hoops to stay in their country like a criminal. The system in Thailand is so rotten it stinks. Look at the crooks in government and the games they play. Chinese Thai.

The Western World invested Billions over the years in Africa, but it was all squandered. The Chinese are only building infrastructure now for their own benefit when they move in and strip those nations of all their wealth …

I can't disagree with both replies. Not only did we, white western nations, pour in billions, we also in an act of kindness eradicated diseases in Africa that annually killed millions of African people. Even now, take a look at how White Male lmao Bill Gates out of compassion for the ppl in Africa, uses his wealth, time, energy and connections to fight diseases in impoverished African communities. (so much for the cynicical and incorrect liberal fairytale of the Big Bad Evil White Man)
But than again, the most powerful person on Earth calling African countries "----- countries" is also telling how western nations look at African countries. Even there might be truth in it, to publicly call them ----- countries does a lot of harm. Just to stick to business and nothing else, seems to work best. :-)

Another perspective of China since the Communist Revolution.

Frank Dikötter is chairman and professor of humanities at the University of Hong Kong and senior fellow at the Hoover Institution. Previously, he taught at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, from which he earned his Ph.D. He has written numerous books, including The Discourse of Race in Modern China, China before Mao: The Age of Openness, and Crime, Punishment and the Prison in Modern China. Dr. Dikötter is the author of People’s Trilogy, a work that documents the impact of communism on the lives of ordinary people in China. The first volume, Mao's Great Famine, won the 2011 Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction. The second, The Tragedy of Liberation, was short-listed for the Orwell Prize in 2014. The final installment, The Cultural Revolution, was short-listed for the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize in 2017.

Thats a very cynical view.
1. No, i am not jumping through hoops like a criminal. Like all countries worldwide, countries have an immigration system for visitors and expats. Its normal.
2. Average Thai citizens arent "poor". Average Thai ppl have a house, rented or owned, a car, send their kids to university, have holidays.
3. No the system isnt rotten. I traveled all around the world, and i find Thailand one of the most safest and pleasant countries to live in.
4. sure, politicians are all crooks, the usual rant of the cynical person blaming "the politicians".
5. Thai Chinese ppl keeping Thai ppl poor. In other words, if the Thai Chinese ppl would be removed, in a few years Thai society abd Thai ppl would be wealthy bc frred from their "Thai Chinese opresor"?
Ofcourse not. Rubbish. If anything, its these ppl developing the country and society with their hard work, smart investments, leadership, etc.

Its really a shame you have such a cynical and negative attitude, doing unjust to a large group of ppl, right here in Thailand and Udon Thani.

The issue of the so called Intelectual Property Theft by China. Or, like the big clown like to say it, "they are thieves!"

1. Busineses are free to do busines in China, but China rightfully says if you want to use our cheap labor and tap into our giant market, you have to share yr technology with us. That is very fair. China simply doesnt want ro be used as a cheap third world country. Western businesses arent "forced" to hand over their "secrets", thats rubbish propaganda talk, they do it out of free will so they cando busines in China and earn much money.
2. one third of foreign students in America are Chinese foreign students. It means billions of dollars for universities and Americas economy. These students come legally study legally and return with knowledge to China legally. they studied hard and are brilliant students. They dont "copy" or "steal", thats all rubbish rasist talk. So a giant stre am of knowledge perfectly legal streams from America to China.

3. Industrial Espionage. Yeah sure, whats new, as if America doesnt do that, including spying on its allies,as was shown by Wikileaks.

4. A recent survey amongst teenagers in China and America. Teenagers in America want to become Vloggers or Influencers, teemagers in China dream about being an astronaut or scientist. Fast and easy money versus discovering andinventing for a better modern world.

5. For a bag full ofdollars western companies gladly do anything to please China. Top Gun 2 removing Taiwan.Basketball throwingfree speech out of the window. Airlines. Fashion companies. All GLADLY bend over andspreadtheir legs for afew bucks.

China is doing what any country shou.d do, stick up for itself and develop from a cheap labor country to a technical country.
The west though does little more than shouting rasist crap and at the same time gladly do anything for China as long as it pays of.

6. The whole painting of China as a thieving country only capable of copying, is so utterly laughable, and based on rasism. Just look at History, the West has taken a lot of inventions, knowledge, and philosophy from China through the centuries, including gun powder and spaghetti.

Maybe the Chinese are reading this UM thread and not appreciating what they read and now voting with their feet, or lack of feet on the ground in Thailand.
I was in Beijing airport waiting for my usual crowded 7.30pm flight to bkk. Reading this thread while Sitting in the quiet of the Air china lounge observing all the different types of Chinese workers throughout the new terminal all were happy individuals just going about their work. Communism hasn’t dampened their work ethic or their ability to at least look happy. A far cry from a number of the sad looking land of smiles worker’s in BKK airport.
Lately on Sunday me forums questions have been asked about Chinese tourists vs Indian tourists. Well to my surprise my normal very crowded 737 plane from Beijing to bkk has been replaced on this trip with 777, same as Thai air use on the same route. Very comfortable and now with English entertainment on the seat screen. Food actually served on a tray.
One other change is the lack of Chinese traveling. Airport in general was very quiet. Once I n board it was lucky to be 120 people. Maybe 30% full. But, there are direct air china flights into Phuket , no need to go to bkk. I did not check how many on that Phuket flight.
On arrival around midnight the exit was easy for me through immigration. Easy collection of bags. Perhaps the Chinese have decided to stay away.
Next early morning though there was a very noticeable presence of Indians in the domestic area. Not huge numbers but noticeable. Well dressed individual families and couples and not one Chinese, Vietnamese or Korean flag bearer to follow.
Is India a purely socialist country?
With a growing middle class?

I think you should go live in China, it sounds absolutely wonderful there. I can not understand why so many people are trying to migrate to the west instead of China. I guess they don't know how great it is there as well.

Numbers don't lie, but it's the same as any developed society will suffer. But China knows this that is why they are developing new technology AI and robotics are their answer, machines are faster and more efficient than any human can ever be , the west's failure is not realising it. America is already nearing full employment and what will they do when they don't have any more workers to do the jobs. Bringing jobs back to America is pointless if there are no workers. Difficult times for all developed countries. The UK has the same problem, without migrants it cannot compete. Strange times ahead for all

Progressives are advised to limit their reading to fake news. President Trump's trade negotiations with China are most successful and will be of great benefit to many Americans. Stick to the mass media which is silent about reporting his many great achievements.

TRADE DEAL WITH CHINA IS A BLOCKBUSTER

"What the Democrats fear most is happening: President Trump and his negotiating team are reaching wide-ranging agreements with China that will be a huge boon to the United States.

In an Oval Office press conference yesterday, President Trump and China’s Vice Premier announced a Phase 1 set of agreements that will be documented over the next several weeks. The video of the press conference is embedded below; Trump’s performance was masterful. His many years of experience as a negotiator shine through.

The Phase 1 agreement covers several important topics, including agricultural sales. China has agreed to ramp up its purchases of agricultural products to $40-$50 billion–three times the previous peak–over the next two years. Trump joked that farmers will need to buy more land and work overtime. That means, I think, that Democrats can say goodbye to hopes that tariffs would be the issue that could win votes in rural America.

The agreement also opens up China’s financial services markets to American companies, covers currency manipulation, and addresses some aspects of intellectual property and technology transfer agreements. Phase 2 negotiations will begin immediately.

Many are saying that the Chinese willingness to enter into this wide-ranging agreement shows that they understand impeachment is a joke, and expect that President Trump will be re-elected. In fact,

Trump himself said exactly that in response to a question: “They expect that I’m going to win. Otherwise they wouldn’t sign the deal. It’s very simple.” If Trump can get our relationship with China straightened out well in advance of the election, with economic benefits becoming visible, the main obstacle to his re-election will, in my opinion, be removed."
