Good thread Vlad. This should be lively.

With annual visa renewals and changing rules, living in Thailand is precarious and that affects some more than others. I used to find it unsettling. Some Thais aren't that enthused about farang hanging out in Thailand and that gets under the skin of some farang more than others. I think I recall Stickman once opining that Udon was the most welcoming part of Thailand for farang. So Udonites are fortunate. Personally I wouldn't put much weight on the recent spray from the Health Minister.

Vlad's isn't a lone voice. There are plenty of farang that are pretty negative on Thailand. I don't look often at Thai Visa but I understand there are many many voices over there big on bashing Thailand and the Thais.

Thanks GT at least your not in the collective that is I love Thailand I think it's great I won't leave it. If that means you constantly stumping up to cash to remain there hey I will cos there's no place I'd like to live then here. Ok What a load of crap you lot are all in a bubble that are scared to have a negative point to say incase you think it will upset others. Not 1 have you replied. To the thread title all you did is bury your heads and post negative cmments. In the next.few weeks you yes you the farangs will be made to pay for the lost revenue caused by the impact of the Corona virus and Ike the sheep you all are you will prop it up happily so you can have your visa stamped.

Vlad I believe I wrote that I want to stay in because of family and it is cheap to live here
And lots of posters do write about the negative of living here
ie dangerous roads, bad air problems with immigration and the rules
Not that I have a problem just go away on holiday to get visa and road trip every 3 months for stamp not difficult
Corona is not a Thai problem but a world one

And if all turns to shet I do have plan b and c to fall back on

I love Thailand, I love my life here, I love the lifestyle and Thainess and, in general, I love the people. I have enough money to return to the West if I choose. I have said it before but if you are a glass half full person you will love Thailand. If not, go home!

Oh and I see nothing wrong with a government asking non tax payers to help support them. I've seen many contributors on here whining about immigrants in their home countries being given a free ride. Hypocrisy.

In direct answer to the topic header .. its my opinion that the overall life style here is better than in could have in the Uk , i have a decent business , no visa issues , the weather is nice hate all them frosty morning black ice de icing the car windows n locks n pea soupers ..oh and short daylight days .. reading thru the thread many posters have already directly answered your question ..im certainly not in any bubble and say it how it is .. as DR states the pros outweigh the cons for me in many ways.

you see the argument from both sides and stop all the constant negativity towards Thailand .. yes there are a few who share your view but have moved on ..you should too and break out your bubble of misery.

I'm certainly not happy having to jump through all the immigration hoops, BUT, it's a small price to pay for all the things I do like. I can understand those who are cash strapped complaining, but whose fault is that, certainly not the countries doing.

I had a friend who was totally negative. I told him that if he hated Thailand so much there are other countries to try. He moved to Cambodia and was back in Thailand in less than a year. He said that Cambodia was worse than Thailand. His next move was to the Philippines. He said that other than the many typhoons and weak infrastructure, the PI's were the best. He died there, RIP.

I should add that he was not wealthy but money wasn't a problem.

Vlad, the Minister is just one person in Thailand and as we all know, Ministers come and go like flies on a wall. Plus what they say, doesn't always reflect the Governments true position on issues.

Personally, I have not found any reason not to live in Thailand. (Double negative). The Thai Immigration Rules and or recent requirements are fair and probably less onerous than those back in your own home Country for visitors and or tourists, which is what we are here. We are not Residents, nor are we Citizens. As Expats, we are simply people who are given a right to stay for various lengths of time.

I have not experienced any difficulties with doing my TM 30 and or Reporting every 90 days when I have to, so I can’t understand what all the fuss is about, when it comes to either one of these two matters. To me they are trivial, when one weighs them up against the benefits of living in Thailand, and they easily dealt with.

As for the issue of corruption, it is the same in all Asian countries and also in most if not all Western countries. The only difference in the western countries it that they give it several other names, but it is still there. One name is TAX and how the so call corrupt free Politicians of the West, end up spending the money.

Sorry to say Vlad, but in the long term you won’t find the quality of life too much different in Vietnam or Philippines from that in Thailand. Q o L will vary from one country to another and Vietnam or Philippines may have some better aspects of life over that in Thailand, but I am equally sure they will have some a lot worse than in Thailand, as well.

So, I will be more than happy to eventually live and stay in Thailand. =D> =D> \:D/ Add me to the plus list. \:D/ \:D/

I have to agree with Samster “I see nothing wrong with a government asking non tax payers to help support them. I've seen many contributors on here whining about immigrants in their home countries being given a free ride. Hypocrisy”. If the government of Australia was only the same, then Australia would not be such a Welfare Country, for all those who just drop in after it becomes too hard in their own home Countries.

Just a few other opinions on Medical Insurance: I also think that medical cover in Thailand should be mandatory for all tourists, long stay visa and retires. To expect to travel to a country and or live in a foreign land, without any form of medical insurance cover, is a Fallacy. Having said this the T Gov, should allow those with long stay visa and or retires, to get source their medical insurance cover, from any reputable overseas Company.

All tourists should be made to have medical insurance cover (for Thailand) before they set foot of the plane at Suvarnabhumi. It is only fair. My understanding is that it would probably cost around $50-100 for a 2 to 4 week holiday period. And if you can’t afford that, as part of your holiday financial plan, then don’t travel. :-k :-k

Just my 2 cents worth

Ha ha Sateeb know all done it all another 1 with the stuck in the thailand bubble syndrome. Wants to leave but scared to. Sit on your balcony with your Archa and chat to your friends on the web because you don't have any in reality.
Christ... Where do you start! Scared to leave? I never sold my house in the UK so I can go anytime I want to.

I don't drink alcohol, so replace Archa with coffee on the patio.

Oh and I have friends with the same mindset that appreciate what we have in life. Yes we complain about things at times but the pros by far outweigh the cons.

Your mobile burger and chips off of a motorbike idea failed to eat into the McDonald's market share (Dear Lord Sugar) and you failed. So what? All entrepreneurs have a bad start. So don't whine on about it. You are predictable and boring.

Move on.

Sateeb the usual arrogant attitude, I failed this I failed that I was making 8-9 k for a 2 hour stint. The only reason I failed was the g/f at the time was lazy and wanted to sit outside with the other losers wanting to live off there falang rich b/fs. I had at least cornered a market and had a go. Why do still harp on about something that happened nearly 10 years on ?? Is that the best you can do ?? I suggest you get out more and socialise, oh you haven't got any social friends that you can call on. Do you smoke ?? Guess not so what exactly do you do all day in your little bubble, sit on your arse all day.

Stickman looked at Vietnam in yesterday's column ("Everyone's Talking About Vietnam"). The beer seems to be cheaper there.

Having lived in Thailand for a long time and being ripped off by the dental and medical profession for a fair amount of money and that does not count the everyday rip offs and having the gloss wash off a long time ago I am now living back in my home country and pleased to be back. As far as I am concerned Thailand is a good place (sometimes I am not too sure about that either) to visit spend your money and get out of there before you have to worry about visas and 90day reporting.

Stickman also seemed to suggest Thai girls are easier than Vietnamese girls and more likely to want some hanky panky on the first date. Despite the more expensive beer, lazy younger gentlemen might prefer to stay in Thailand. ;)

Dear Udon Map. There seems to be 2 threads about the same subject, this one and why do you stay in Thailand. Slightly confusing.
