It would have also helped his cause if the Senators were not all military appointees.

Re: Congratulations
Thailand will never move forward through the ballot box. Been a long time since Black May 1992 but that level of upheavel is required again.

True, but presumably he knew that when he started his campaign, so why give them another reason to not vote for himLaan Yaa Mo wrote: ↑July 14, 2023, 4:45 pmIt would have also helped his cause if the Senators were not all military appointees.

Re: Congratulations
Maybe he decided to act on the wishes of his followers, which was part of the appeal to voters. There were any number of reasons the establishment could have used to deny him his due. If the elites don't want him, the country doesn't get him. The opinion piece in the Bangkok Post details how this has worked for the past 20 years. Let's see what develops over the next little while.pipoz4444 wrote: ↑July 14, 2023, 5:45 pmTrue, but presumably he knew that when he started his campaign, so why give then another reason to not vote for himLaan Yaa Mo wrote: ↑July 14, 2023, 4:45 pmIt would have also helped his cause if the Senators were not all military appointees.
Also, it could be argued that the military appointees to the Senate were placed there to ensure someone like Pita, or a non'-elite candidate, would be blocked from becoming Prime Minister.

Re: Congratulations
Some comments here come across as making excuses for the stuffed Senate snd suggesting that its inate bias, despite being legalised by the current Constitution, is acceptable.
As pointed out, the non-issue of these shares was simply the low-hanging fruit that the caretaker government's attack dogs opted for. They probably have several other legal challenges lined up in the unlikely event the CC no-bills Pita and/or his party on the shares and knowingly ignoring the rules.

"Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, the leader of the Palang Pracharat Party may emerge as a surprise new candidate for Prime Minister next Wednesday with sources within the eight-party coalition increasingly concerned after Thursday’s polarised debate in parliament, that the avuncular party leader may gain the support of the 188 MPs in the House who voted against Mr Pita and swing undecided senators to come in behind his bid which could lead to him securing well over the 375 votes required under Section 272 to be legally confirmed as government leader..."

Re: Congratulations
I love this guy. He sleeps during parliamentary debates, is overweight, has little hair, and walks with a stoop. I can really identify with him. However, the fact that he is a military man and is second to Prayuth should disqualify him, and it will be a farce if he becomes the Prime Minister.tamada wrote: ↑July 15, 2023, 7:52 am"Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, the leader of the Palang Pracharat Party may emerge as a surprise new candidate for Prime Minister next Wednesday with sources within the eight-party coalition increasingly concerned after Thursday’s polarised debate in parliament, that the avuncular party leader may gain the support of the 188 MPs in the House who voted against Mr Pita and swing undecided senators to come in behind his bid which could lead to him securing well over the 375 votes required under Section 272 to be legally confirmed as government leader..."

A week or so ago he was asked by the Thai Rath channel (32) if he was going to be the next Prime Minister. His answer was that we would have to wait and see.

Re: Congratulations
A letter writer to the Bangkok Post provides a good reason why the Senate appointed military people will not permit Pita to move forward: 'It is the threat to drastically cut the number of generals from 1390 to 400 and to bring the military under control of parliament, not to mention asking them to return public property, including deeds and businesses. to its very core.

Re: Congratulations
SO BASICALLY ..
Agent Orange has been done like a kipper.. as have all the millions of voters who voted for Pita.
Phea Thai (red) now doing a deal with others to form a government leaving the Orange party in an opposition role means a few more years of the same until the next general election which would surely see an opposition landslide or another coup before that.
Ive never seen so many Thais as animated with regard to this election and the subsequent fall out including my missus whose expletives with regard to the Thai version of Biden seemingly inline for the top job made me blush, alas what has occurred was all too predictable as are the BKK protests now gathering pace.
Democracy at its finest .. so Thailand not ready for change YET maybe next time eh ????

What options are left for Pita? Rally the masses and revolt against the senators?

Re: Congratulations
Not sure but i think reading latest Pita has been suspended as an MP and his MFP will effectively become the opposition party,
One of the MFP main pledges was not to work with any of the military formed parties so it may well just be the PT Party forming a coalition government with the old guard who have the backing of the senate.
Im in Bkk next week so may well see first hand re any protests.
Lots of roads already closed off for the BKK Marathon this weekend also.

Re: Congratulations
At last! Looks like it's all sorted. We can all relax now.
Pheu Thai deputy leader Phumtham Wechayachai said on Friday that the party would eventually have to include two political parties linked to former junta leaders in its coalition government in the making.
Asked if the Pheu Thai-led government would need the Palang Pracharath and United Thai Nation parties to ensure stability, Phumtham said: “The political math is clear. It’s a must, and the game is forcing us to take this path.”

Re: Congratulations
I asked my Thai wife what she thought. She supported Pita but said that the people must obey the law and the law says Pita cannot be prime minister. She was surprisingly remarkably calm.

Eight years in jail!!! Did you really return for that? If true, it is better to return to Singapore. But wait, there may be a get out of jail card to play. Let's see.
