Ecuador..main reason is the Weather/Climate.."If you are applying for a Retiree Visa, you will need a lifetime pension of $1275 USD per month plus $250 USD per dependent if you are bringing your family. If you only have a pension for the next two years, you can also apply for a pension visa, but your permit is also only valid for two years."

I think Peru has comparably easy squatting rights for Thai nationals. The better half can pitch her tent there while you live the life of Riley over the border in Ecuador with random conjugal visits to keep the peace.

A state of emergency has just been declared in three coastal provinces in Ecuador. It seems the country has a law and order problem:
"We cannot deny that organized crime has permeated the state, political organizations and society itself, it is a problem that has been brewing for more than a decade," Lasso said after a security cabinet meeting.

If safety is of concern to expats, you might want to think about staying away from Ecuadoe:
How safe is Ecuador to live in?
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Ecuador now ranks as the least safe country in Latin America, thanks to escalating gang violence, drug trafficking and civil unrest in 2022. Nearly two in three (64%) Ecuadorians interviewed last year said they do not feel safe walking alone at night where they live, while just 35% said they do.Jan 20, 2566 BE

Other than five LONG years working in Southern Kalifornia, I have lived full time in Thailand since 1991. Thailand is not perfect but it is my home and I can't imagine living in any other country. I'm by no means wealthy but I have a healthy surplus from my pensions every month. I could not have the same standard of living in my home country (USA).

I have been married to my Thai wife for more than 20 years. She says she is now too old to train another husband so she will keep me. Living in the boonies of Loei province is relaxing and peaceful. I am content.

Glalt, Interesting to hear your perceptive and that you live in the Boonies near Loei. When I previously lived in Udon and Nong Khai, I/we did briefly look at Loei, but I was put off by the fact that there wasn't much going in in Loei itself, we couldn't find anywhere to live there, that there were few flights from the airport, otherwise travel would have involved long road trips to Udon or wherever. Can I ask, has any of that changed?. Udon would certainly be be too busy for me now.
