So, he lands at 9 am, arrested, taken to court, read the charges and in jail (hospital) all about 6 hours before they vote PT's Srettha in as PM.
Nothing to see here, move along now.

Re: Thaksin's back
Pita and MFP didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting the top job and it had bugger all to do with their plan to amend Article 112 either.
Pita's MFP couldn't offer up the glittering prize of Thaksin to the ruling classes but Pheu Thai could. However, there's no way Ung Ing could be seen as turning her dad over to the authorities, so Srettha is the fall guy. His "leadership" will gradually diminish and be eclipsed around the time the current Senate retires in April or May next year. Whereupon Ung Ing assumes the mantle of Premiership, gives daddy a pardon after which it all kicks off again.

Tam,
While I'm not up on all the Thai laws on pardons, I thought Thaksin would require a Royal Pardon. If so I wonder if folllowing would apply

Good point but wasn't it Yingluck's unstated plan to bring her uncle back what caused the last big ruckus? The rice pledging debacle was also a factor but pardoning Thaksin was all over the media and brought out the royalists.Stantheman wrote: ↑August 23, 2023, 6:21 pmTam,

That was before the "NEW" rule that came into effect in 2022, probably in anticipation of Thaksin returning some day.tamada wrote: ↑August 23, 2023, 6:57 pmGood point but wasn't it Yingluck's unstated plan to bring her uncle back what caused the last big ruckus? Re: Thaksin's back
Good point again but when it comes to the rules here, usually it only takes a bigger "box of cakes" no? A new Constitution usually comes with a new government and their new rules. Legislation seems to be rescinded more easily than it can be promulgated.Stantheman wrote: ↑August 23, 2023, 8:32 pmThat was before the "NEW" rule that came into effect in 2022, probably in anticipation of Thaksin returning some day.tamada wrote: ↑August 23, 2023, 6:57 pmGood point but wasn't it Yingluck's unstated plan to bring her uncle back what caused the last big ruckus? I wasn't living here during the Thaksin years but depending who you talk to, he was either the great benevolent reformer or just another manipulative politician corrupted by power.

Re: Thaksin's back
I was here during the Taksin years. You had to evaluate him as compared to his predecessors. What he and Thai Rak Thai promised; 30 Baht medical scheme, improved infrastructure, and a real voice in government for the lower classes (particularly Issan) happened. Was he a rich, rather corrupt (comparitively) politician? Sure, but again, you've got to compare him to those who came before... Its my opinion the military ran him off because he had too much popularity and was dipping into things such as the annual "military reshuffle."

Re: Thaksin's back
A couple of quotes from an excellent Economist article.
Thaksin Shinawatra shows his true colours
A grubby political compromise with the army has enraged Thai voters
..... In helping to sabotage Move Forward, by doing a deal with the army establishment that his party had promised to shun, Mr Thaksin has revealed that he is no friend of Thai democracy but rather an instrument of the status quo.....
.... His party will go into government with some of the establishment’s most unapologetic stooges—cheerleaders for the coups that ended Mr Thaksin’s government in 2006 and his sister’s in 2014. Meanwhile, even as Mr Thaksin awaits release from jail, Thailand’s rightful next leader, Move Forward’s Pita Limjaroenrat, could face imprisonment on trumped-up charges.........

Re: Thaksin's back
Doodoo, I cannot think of any Western nations that gaol.opposition leaders. Political deals yes, but that is a long way from what happens here.

Re: Thaksin's back
Slipping on my "oppositional" cap for a moment, Egypt, Tunisia, Venezuela, Bangladesh, Senegal, Turkey, Belarus (sentenced in exile), Russia and very recently Pakistan.
Not 'western' enough? Even Singapore has jailed opposition party members when they see fit.

Anwar Ibrahim: While being the leader of the Pakatan Rakyat opposition, Anwar was charged in 2008 with sodomising a male aide. He was tried in 2010 and 2011 and, in January 2012, was acquitted. In March 2014, the acquittal was overturned by the Court of Appeal, which convicted him and imposed a sentence of five years' imprisonment.
Is Malaysia considered a Western country, maybe
Is Malaysia considered a Democratic country, arguably yes.
Does Malaysia have "Rule of Law in it Court system". Should have after the Brits, but who knows these days.
