I wasn't living here during the Thaksin years but depending who you talk to, he was either the great benevolent reformer or just another manipulative politician corrupted by power.
I was:-
In 2000 onward the people living North of Korat had minimal if nothing in the way of infrastructure, which, in a very short period of time improved expodentionaly. When on R&R from Chevron I had to goto a shop in Ban Dung to borrow their telephone line just to get a 56kb connection for critical email. No mobile phone. Roads were crap and power hit and miss. Etc. Etc. Etc.
Sure he was corrupt but by far the best of VERY poor options.

I would argue he was a very good option at the time as demonstrated by what he accomplished. He made promises that he actually kept. We'll have to see how he/his party performs this time around.

Anwar Ibrahim: While being the leader of the Pakatan Rakyat opposition, Anwar was charged in 2008 with sodomising a male aide. He was tried in 2010 and 2011 and, in January 2012, was acquitted. In March 2014, the acquittal was overturned by the Court of Appeal, which convicted him and imposed a sentence of five years' imprisonment.

I should correct my statement and say that if a Chinese or Indian company has a certain number of Board of Directors, I can't remember if it is 3, 5 or 10, at least one has to be Malay whether he has the experience or expertise to do the job or not.

Venezuela is due south of the most 'western' nation on the planet.

Singapore is considered the most 'Westernized' of the Southeast Asian nation states.

However, if one doesn't have any personal friends who are politicians there, it doesn't matter, as they still don't count.

Per capita, Malaysia has the highest number of civil servants of the westernized southeast Asian nations. They also have a colossal chip on their shoulder when they gaze across the Straits of Johor and see how badly that upstart island has fared since they expelled them from the federation.

Back on topic: some locals appear to be very, very upset that Thaksin has been whisked away to the police hospital within hours of being jailed, fostering the perception that he's being treated with kid gloves.

bearing in mind Takos original illness when returning just why he is wearing a neck brace collar and arm sling is a tad baffling ..

I do hope he makes a speedy recovery and slips off into his planned retirement without too much fuss.

Not much chance of Thaksin bowing out gracefully just yet.

If you think peak corruption has been achieved in Thai politics - probably not yet.

A quick peek at tam's link above shows a convicted, imprisoned and then deported "flour" smuggler is about to rise to leadership - I use that term loosely - in a significant Thai political party.

And then there is Thaksin's release. :D

The wheels within wheels are still turning. :D
Thai former PM Thaksin Shinawatra set to face trial over alleged royal insult

- Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is set to be indicted for allegedly insulting the monarchy.

- The complaint stems from an interview the tycoon gave to foreign media in 2015.

- What's next? The former leader will appear before court on June 18.

Is Thaksin as corrupt as many or maybe most politicians? That includes Uncle Joe,Trump and the US congress.

This thread is about Thaksin (and Thailand).

Hopefully it doesn't get derailed again like earlier on.

If you want to whinge or complain about politicians in another country, start a new thread, or find an existing thread, in the appropriate place. 👍

This is getting interesting with Thaksin, Pita, Big Joke, the PM and General Prawit all feeling heat from the courts in recent weeks although the latter political figure seems likely to escape with his image untarnished. What does this flurry of court activity mean? Who stands to gain, who is supposed to lose and why?

Sorry if I offended the purists, but I thought the thread was about Thaksin and corruption.
