The trouble Australia has, it is drunk on immigration. The country would have been in recession if the immigration was smaller. Both conservative and progressive governments have recognised this and played along. You are right to raise this issue, Australia needs real growth, the down sides of huge immigration will catch up on us.

So Albanese says we can't go around deafening whales with "seismic blasting" to efficiently define the known gas reserves needed to bolster the slow switch to renewables that will take "about 20 years", but no worries digging up and burning coal for "about 20 years" after the world has been saved by solar and wind?

Dutton's policy however is based on politics, not science, his time lines are totally unrealistic, and his approach is a classic example of wedge politics. Even if he assumed the mantle of PM next election, the necessary changes to Australian laws would never get through a minority Senate, 100% impossible.

It's nothing but posturing in my opinion in his attempt to differentiate the two sides of politics instead of inviting cooperation on this very major issue.

The visionary bit is that nuclear will probably outlast fossil fuels and, if there's a quantum leap in static electrical energy storage, may happily take up the slack when the 'sun don't shine and the wind don't blow' for the only two horses in the current renewables race.

He's a politician so making pie-in-the-sky projections comes with the territory as does the opposition digging its heels in just because it's political. Dutton sees Albanese struggling in the polls so pulls numbers out of his arse. Albanese sees Dutton closing the gap so pulls numbers out of his arse. It takes (at least) two to cooperate.
