Closure of bars on Queen's birthday

Since when has it been required not to sell alcohol on the Queen's birthday, cos in 14 years of living in Thailand, it has never happened before. I understand it will be the same for an individual's birthday in December. Was it the same in other parts of Thailand? Don't think so cos I got in touch with my mates in Pattaya and business as usual there. Is this another case of the Governor of Udonthani flexing his muscles again?

As a visitor and guest in good standing in Thailand, I don't see a problem with it all. What's one day?

Anyone could have bought some alcohol during the week to have some at home on Friday if they were that desperate.

Had a bottle of Heineken at MK's at the complex yesterday. Shop near the house on the way home 2 thai's drinking leo. Bought 4 heineken's to take home.

Maybe more a case of your not knowing a lot about the country that you live in. Your mates in Pattaya eh? Maybe you should have gone to join them. It's just one day so I do not see what the problem is unless you cannot live without alcohol for 1 day. Maybe you need help.

Well I don't see what the point is, Dave. Are the bars closed on your birthday, on mine? Rather than insulting the poster perhaps you can explain the point of the closure to me, (probably best in a PM).

It really shouldn't matter to us who live here but for the punters who come for a holiday they are here to piss it up and chase the girls. Would you go to the beach for a holiday if it was closed? Go to a football match if it's been cancelled? For those who come here for a short stay it does make a difference.

Well Dave, sorry to inform you but I don't have a problem with alcohol, as I only go out for drink twice a week. As Friday was one of my social days out to meet my friends for the usual banter, what I would like is prior knowledge that there is no beer being sold due to whatever. Its called courteousy something you obviously know nothing about.

For those of us who have chosen to live here in LOS its only right that we abide by the laws set out here , simple as that , if the Thai goverment say we should all wear flowery hats every Sunday then ok , much the same as a day or so now n then without a pint or 2 . I do recall booze being openly sold on HM Queens birthday in the past in Bkk n Patts but in Udonthani not so for whhatever reason.

Although I can commiserate with those who as MS says come here to get drunk and chase the ladies, this is Thailand and any GOOD travel agent should have explained that on certain days bars do close, and weird laws do come into effect ata whim. If that is not done, sorry but for the tourist that is just hard cheese, one day without alcohol will not kill you.

A travel agent? Do they still exist.

If they do I doubt if many of them cater for a mongers holiday. Can just imagine someone going into Thomas Cooks and asking where they can find prostitutes and what days the bars are open.

Add to that list, all big election days.

Our daughter arrived in Bangkok several years ago during the national elections. She wanted a couple of Heinekens for the room and we weren't about to raid the room fridge. The bars were all closed and 7-11 wasn't selling any liquor. I lamented to the door man. He asked how many bottles I wanted......I gave him the store price for 4 bottles and he was back in 5 minutes with the goods.....for that, he earned a nice tip.

My customers told me that all restaurants at Center Point were serving beers and i noticed that even the one with music at the end of soi Katuei was serving spirits as usual ,so there must be something I don't understand.
