Making British Citizenship for a Thai Baby

Hi Friends of UdonMap,

My wife has not long given birth to a baby boy,My wife is Thai and I'm English by desend.We are both living in Nong-Bua-Lam-Phu,Thailand at the moment. We are needing some advise about making our Son a British Citizenship[,He's one month old at the moment.Firstly,our Son has got his Thai Birth Certificate,do we need to register his birth at the British Embassy in Bangkok?on the net it states that there is no need to do this if one of the Parents is of British Desendent,is there any advantage of doing this? Also, can we apply for British Citezenship or as it got to be a British Overseas Citizenship?/because I'm English and was born in England.
I look forward to any advise anyone can give me.

The British citizenship for your son is limited to him, and although he can go to the UK any time, it cannot be inherited by his descendants (this assumes you have full rights). I think theoretically you do not need to register the birth, but to avoid a long delay at Immigration in Uk best to either get him a UK passport or get the embassy in bangkok to stamp his Thai passport as 'right to reside' or such.

Also at the age of 21, he has to choose his nationality (British or Thai). Britain I think allows dual nationality, but Thailand doesn't. look on the Uk government immigration website.

I know quite a few thai people here in the UK who have both thai and UK passports, and therefore are dual nationals and over 21. so i am not sure this is true. Where did you find this information?

Getting the UK passport is all you need but only really necessary if you are planning a UK or other overseas trip together while he's a toddler. If you do go ahead with it, get his Thai passport at the same time. Then he can leave/re-enter Thailand on the Thai one which will be easier.

Don't spend any extra money on registering the birth in the UK via the British Embassy. It's a very expensive way to get a birth certificate!

Although the Thai laws as referenced don't permit dual nationality, I have not heard of any instances where a legitimate dual-nationality holder has been forced to renounce one or the other.
