Potting Compost

Post by zoomzoom » July 28, 2012, 7:01 pm

Does anyone know if/where I can buy this in Udon?

I'm not talking about the small bags of topsoil but proper compost of the type that is recommended for seed planting/potting on.

Any help would be much appreciated, as I wish to give my Trinidad Scorpion “Butch T” seeds the best, possible, chance of success.

I love Phet but have read that these really are something else, with gloves being needed to handle the chillis to prevent taking the skin off of your hands!!

Many thanks in advance.

Potting Compost

I also grow the extra hot type chillis... I have some Naga viper plants starting to flower at the moment... as far as compost goes I bought a big bag next to the Prajack Monument start of Tahan road... there is a little shop just off the roundabout selling plants and plant pots ect.

I have heard the Trinidad Scorpion “Butch T” is now the hottest in the world rated at 1,463,700 Scoville Heat Units compared with the Naga viper rated at 1,382,117 Scoville Heat Units... Thai chilli's just can not compare with the generated heat... they are just for teething babies to chew on...

Many, many thanks for your reply, it was very much appreciated and will be visiting your suggested shop in the very near future.

Concerning the chillis, I could not agree more with your thoughts about Thai chillis being only for teething - I've been a "muncher" for nearly 50 years and think my palate has remained impervious to them ever since my first bite!

Certainly, it would appear that my taste for "phet" exceeds that of the average Thai.

Potting Compost

Hi,
Just planted some Chili seed abiut a month ago. Used the topsoil bags to start the seeds off, in empty marge tubs, don't forget to put some holes in the bottom of the tub for drainage. Was told this by a triend. They are ready for transplanting now. Every single seed sprouted. Had to give a lot of them to my friends. I had far to many. For a few years i've been using the potting compost that i bought in Tesco's. To costly for a C.C. like me. Have grown Toms, yellow toms, all sorts of herbs, and many more, from seeds using the bags of topsoil at 25B a big bag. Not had a failure yet, touch wood.
I give some toms to the Thai next door, ready for transplanting, and told her to put in garden. You would not believe it, she put the marge tub, they were in, onto the soil and wondered why they did not grow, T.I.T.
When i used the P.Comp. i planted some of the seeds in P.C. and some in the topsoil. I coud not tell the difference. The seeds grew the same in both.

Many thanks for the reply, Douglas, it was much appreciated.

I've had varying results, using bags of "topsoil" - some seem ok but the last one I bought sprouted as many weeds as seedlings - has anyone taught Thais to sterilise soil before bagging it?

So far, though, I've been using it for the normal herb seeds where you seem to get 100's in a packet - parsley, thyme, rosemary, chives, basil etc.

That means if there are any problems with some germinating it is NOT a problem and (as you said) a bonus can be having too many for individual needs and being able to give some seedlings/plants away.

However, with the super hot chillis (Viper, TS etc.) these are sold at much higher prices and in much lower quantities (typically less than 10 seeds in a pack) so maximum care needs to be taken at all steps in their growth, otherwise the cash has just been wasted.

As an aside, which branch of Tesco was selling potting compost?

Was it the one closest to Nong Khai Road and was it Tesco themselves (in store) or one of the vendors surrounding the car park?

If that is the Tesco you are referring to and the PC is being sold by a vendor could you, please, give me an idea of which one/where they are located?

Many thanks in advance.
