Electronic components

I am planning to start digging into electronics, just for fun and on a starter level.

But : is there an electronics shop in Udon where I can purchase my resistors, capacitors, transistors and the like ? I don't think Amorn at Big-C is the shop for that, maye I have to go to Bkk ?

There are 2 or 3 electronics shops in Udon. Try Sunyamit on Udondusati road near the water fountain circle. The proprietor is knowledgeable and kind. Sakol electronics is down a soi about 60 meters off of Nitayo road in the Nong Bua market area. The proprietor is knowledgeable. The store is pretty crowded. Electroscience is past Lotus Rangsina about a hop, skip and a jump.

Thanks Geoffrey. Since I am not an Udontonian, I may have to do some research as to the where's, but I'll find it.

Amorn does have "resistors, capacitors, transistors and the like", however I don't know if will suit your needs.

Futurlec if you want to order online.

They can be a bit slow at delivery but other than that they have a large range.

One listed here is in Bkk but they are also in many different countries.

Not sure where to post this question, as I will use it in an electro-mechanical design here it goes...

Anybody know someplace within Thailand that sells Polycaprolactone? Brand names Polymorph, Instamorph,
ShapeLock. It seems very useful for small part design/prototyping, but I can not find it anywhere. I would
order through Ebay but having account/shipping issues.

Hi,
Farnell has a store in Thailand. They stock everything you will need. You can order online and they send it to you by post. Find them on the internet and they will give you their terms and conditions.
When i was in electronics i used to deal with them all the time, they were far better than R.S. in my opinion.

Thanks for the tip on Farnel, that will be useful as RS is difficult to deal with. Unfortunately, they do not sell PCL. It looks like this stuff is a bit to cutting edge for our little backwater.

One of the challenges of living in Thailand is finding something obscure like PCL. There are a number of Thai published journals that reference the material.....and if you're willing to invest a little bit of time on google, I'm sure you can uncover some email addresses for the named professors. You may strike out, but won't know if you don't try.

There is a shop that sells electronic surplus, mostly components for consumer electronics, at map coordinate P14. It is on the left side of the street as you are walking away from the railroad tracks, between AEK Udon and road to Wat po Tiwaralam. Adjoining is another shop that sells audio equipment and parts thereof.

For other parts, especially semiconductors and some passive components, I have them sent from Electronic Source in Bangkok -the prices are pretty good and the shipping by EMS and handling is cheap. www.es.co.th

Thanks for the idea and email address Parrot, but I finally got my ebay/paypal situation straightened out a bit. I had earlier had my Thailand shipping address accepted in Paypal and actually had a couple of items shipped successfully using it. Then I did the unforgivable and logged into Paypal without doing it through a USA VPN, which triggered their S/W to "demand" that they call me on the telephone to verify my identity. Since the software will not allow you to put an international prefix into the number, accepting the call or getting an SMS on my US number was not going to happen. Then I sent Paypal a somewhat derogatory message stating that since I have an RSA key with me, and log in with it, why are they trying to call me. I mean, somebody would have to crack my password - or kidnap me and torture me for it - AND get my physical RSA key in hand for them to use my account. Then they'd have to kill me so that I would not report the fact that my Paypal RSA key was stolen. All this, for the $25 worth of obscure material that isn't much use to people who go about stealing/kidnapping/torturing/killing people

That seemed to be a trigger to disable the Thai shipping addresss (at least that is my opinion). At any rate, I just asked the PCL seller on Ebay if he'd send it to my Thai address despite it not being kosher with Paypal, and they understood my problem. The stupidity of some of these online security policies is amazing at times. So, from now on I will just message the ebay seller and get him to agree on a change of shipping address, before placing an order... some will, some won't. A few years back very few would ship to a non-Paypal confirmed address.

rickfarang - agreed, ES is useful, but a bit lacking in inventory. Unfortunately no Digikey in Thailand.

Just curious, has anybody used Alibaba.com before? I had thought it was a site only for large wholesale type transactions, and most items are, but I found that there are some items where you can order only one, or a few units. The prices are damned good as well, like solar panels for $0.60-0.80 per watt. Items like solar panels, which "seem" to be free of Thai import duties, could fit in with KB's idea of an "informal buyers club" to save on shipping and get volume discounts. At $1/watt for panels & inverter it starts to become quite feasable to use solar in sunny Thailand (especially with Thai labor to put up the racking and wiring)... even without rebate programs that are in most of our home countries. Anyway, off subject yet again.

You can buy electronic components online from Mouser and RS components. They also have offices in Thailand.

Digikey ships to Thailand. I think they only have that one warehouse in Minnesota. Shipping is pricey, especially if you only want a few parts.
