individual Cobras are interesting creatures. They are thought to be the most intelligent snake on earth. They are most dangerous when protecting their nests. It is unusual for a snake to actually build a nest but an individual Cobra does. They lay their eggs in a mound of dirt and leaves and guard it. The snake will give you a loud warning before it strikes, if you ever hear the hiss of a cobra, you will immediately know what it is. Bites from an individual Cobra are actually quite rare and the most bites come from handlers doing snake shows. When people are bitten they have a better than fifty percent chance that no venom will be injected. Apparently the snake only injects venom when they think their life is threatened. You will seldom see this snake in the wild because they do their best to stay out of your way.

As a side note, it is believed by some people that snakes do not like lemon grass. I don't believe that. I was walking around one of our ponds when a individual stood up in the middle of a huge clump of lemon grass. I give all snakes a lot of respect and avoid them if I happen to see one. This one startled me so bad that I fell on my butt backing up. My heart was thumping. When I stood back up the snake was swimming across the pond to the other side.

Researching the Internet, I found a report that there were no documented fatal bites from a individual Cobra reported in Thailand over a five year period except from snake handlers. The nearest fatal bite from a wild snake was a guy who had caught one, put it in a bag and was carrying the bag. It bit though the bag biting him in the thigh. He died quickly.

Wayne, I think I recall you posting that you lived 25 years in Australia. Were you based in Queensland all that time? I'd be scared shxt if I was bitten by a snake. I would have done more than go to a chemist.

When you watch documentaries they talk about habits, strike speeds, reactions to the venom of a snake but seldom do they talk about the noise.

Few years back I inadvertently cornered a banded krait, it gave me 2 warning strikes, neither were necessary and an incredibly loud hiss which at 5am, still dark, was an experience and noise I will NEVER forget.

For me NO real FEAR of BIGSNAKES<>I fairly sure I will HEAR or SEE the thing<>and with speed will put some disant between me and the snake QUICKLY<>It those DARN and sometime DEADLY SMALL Snakes that I FEAR<>you don't see or hear it until it is to late.
