Recently I received a new ATM card from my bank in America. It is one of the new cards with a chip. The new card looks and feels to be the same size as my old card, but lo and behold, it will not fit into the local ATM machines. I have tried at least 10 ATM machines around Udon without any luck. It may be that the new card is thicker and will not go into the ATM slot. In any event, the card does not work in any ATM machine.
Has anyone else had this experience? I can go to Bangkok Bank or certain stores and they run the card through a scanner and then it works, but not all banks have this device. If anyone has had this experience, please share.

ATM/Credit Card Woes
I recall reading not too long ago that ONLY the Bangkok Bank ATM could accept ATM CHIP CARD.. However the new government goal is to have all banks ATM accept CHIP cards by 2019. My friend got an email from Kasikorn bank informing him that he must get a new ATM card with the chip. Hope it helps. Google Bangkok Post..

The-Monk,
I appreciate your response to my post. It looks like people with the new chip cards will have to wait until ATM machines are upgraded. If this is so, then chip ATM cards will not be convenient for some time. As I said, I have tried no fewer than 10 machines and had bank employees help me, including the Bangkok Bank branch at Central in Udon. I had to go to the Bangkok Bank on Prajak Road to get money from the card.

ATM/Credit Card Woes
I have an HSBC debit card issued from the UK.
UK cards have been chip & pin since 2002.
I can & do use my card in any ATM - although I use (for obvious reasons) AEON whenever I can.

My ATM was issued this year. I wonder if the new ones from the USA are any different from the UK. I have had no luck. I will try AEON or some other banks I have not tried.
Thanks

CORRECTION according to this BP article MOST ( 90% ) of ATM can now accept CHIP CARDS..
<< Some 60 million magnetic-stripe ATM and debit cards issued by local commercial banks and circulating in the market will be upgraded to chip-embedded cards by the end of 2019, says a senior central bank official.
An estimated 90% of ATMs nationwide will support chip-embedded cards by May 16, but the machines still support magnetic-stripe cards for those who hold only that type, said Tongurai Limpiti, a deputy governor of the Bank of Thailand.
