Still a HIGH concerning Traffic Fatalities

Post by Doodoo » December 11, 2018, 11:27 am

The video I watched said one reason was the lack of enforcement of the rules

I see in countries such as Canada new rules are being put in place
1) Ontario Driving with a cell phone in use, Fine $1,000 (25,000 THB) plus removal of vehicle for 3 days

2) Prince Edward Island legislature passed the ruling, which goes into effect on Dec. 8. The law says that failing to stop for a school bus will result in 12 demerit points and driver's license suspension for three months, plus a $5,000 (125,000THB) fine

32.8 fatalities per 100,000 pop. Worst in SE Asia and among worst in World. Meaning 22,960 (63 per day) fatalities per year A sad, sad statistic

Motorcycles/passengers 76%
Cyclists - 8%
Pedestrians - 8%
Cars/Light Trucks - 6%
Missing on Road - 2% (For people who want things to add up to 100%)

They love to bully you on the roads here , or at least try . When you jump on the horn , or refuse to yield they soon back down.
They give it large but they hate confrontation nearly as much as losing face . Try and stare one down and they refuse to make eye contact .
My wifes used to it now , she knows how truly bad they really are behind the wheel . Unfortunately its pretty much the same all over Asia . My experience in Loas was they drive just as bad as the Thais only twice as fast on poorer roads

Most likely many countries are probably trying to reduce their citizens death rates on the roads, its a shame Thailand cannot make a hard line commitment to saving their own citizens lives. Education should be the first line of attack and as Doodoo has pointed out some are increasing the fines.
A 76% death rate for motorcycles is just a tragic circumstance. All UM members know the problem of why motorcycles are at such a high rate. Helmets, alcohol, stupidity, kids riding bikes etc etc are all to blame, and when they are pooled together there is no hope for any one. There seems to be no way to shame the Thai governments over many years. I spent quite a number of years living in Vietnam and went through the period of the helmet law change. It eventually saved thousands each year. 10 of thousands over the entire period of time. If you are in Vietnam you will see the vast majority wearing a helmet. Wish I had the for thought and brains to get involved in selling helmets. From next to zero to full compliance, that's 70 million helmets. Only needed to make 10%. Maybe if Thailand gets fair dinkim that could be a money maker.
Implementing change does work, you won't stop every idiot but at least try.
Where i am at the moment, the UAE, they are pushing hard to drop the rate, good roads, speed cameras, hard driving tests and this year additional heavy fines. Believe me the UAE like Thailand has their fair share of idiots and absolute bullies flashing their lights on the roads. Just a much lower population. See as below. Very expensive. 10 AED is 90 bht

Thanks for your input people especially Barney

To get the kids (5 Girls) here at the house I developed a test to show the purpose of helmets and how they protected yourself

They had to wear a helmet and once in place I would take a metal spoon and strike the helmet Once completed I asked them if their head hurt. The 100% was NO. With that they then removed the helmet and then I went to hit their now unprotected which would not happen.
It took a couple of sessions with one or two of them but I am happy to say they all wear a helmet now

If one person wears a helmet puts on a seatbelt that is a PLUS

Too bad most Thais don't believe in the merits of a helmet, they figure their skulls are thick enough.

Basically acting in a RESPONSIBLE way toward anything is lost on them. They cannot comprehend CONSEQUENCES.

All joking aside it will take a much stronger government, bribe less police force and a revamp of training and testing before we will see any improvements on the roads

There are not a lot of statistics available but it appears that far more serious accidents happen at night. Casualties are predominantly at night.

Drink driving is not treated with the same harshness as it is in western societies.

I imagine if it was the death rates would drop drastically.

Thankyou . Its a lot smarter than driving or riding a motorscooter whilst under the influence , is it not . Or riding a motorscooter without a helmet . Now i realise that no farang would do such a thing , but ---- happens .
