UTH Airport expanding

AOT is moving forward “World Aviation Hub” and the company plans to develop Udon Thani airport to support 6.5 million passengers per year from the current 3.4 million people per year. Investment limit 3,500 million baht

Jeez, my house build was over 1 million baht, dont see much help in doubling capacity for 3.5. You sure not billion?

Yes, I read 3,500 million as 3.5 billion.

what do they plan to do? I don't think they've recovered all the flights that stopped during COVID.. I'd like to see some weekly or more often international connections out of Udon say to Seoul, Tokyo or Munich and Frankfurt..

Col mentioned this a few days ago and of the 3 or 4 airports getting upgrades, UTH has the biggest budget and notably KKC gets nada.

I doubt you'll see long-haul out of Oodorn but a resumption of non-stop flights to Singapore would be good as SIN has already attracted the post-Covid long-haul carriers despite the Thai PM's pipe dreams of BKK ever doing the same.

Vientiane, Sihanoukville, Saigon, Hanoi, Hong Kong, Jeiju and Osaka may be among the first regional destinations but they need to get more domestic non-stops that avoid BKK/DMK first. Anyone else for UTP?

If they expand and have directly flight to Singapore would be lovely, the direct flight VTE - Singapore always full

also they shall alow international check in, mean departing from UDT and in transit in bkk to the International flight avoiding the hassle of immigration in BKK and check out and check in again

The Post was to suggest a sign of the times and ok is not directly related t the UTH Airport expansion

Some 30 years ago Thailand was very attractive to many tourists from all over the Globe (Europe, America and the West etc.) for both its lifestyle and affordability, whilst other countries / emirates, such as UAE were struggling to attract anything more than working Expats. These other places had little to offer and could just not compete. Fast forward today and the shoe appears to be on the other foot.

Whilst Udon Thani may not be a benchmark, Bangkok is and it appears that there is a changing of the guard, when it comes to the Tourist. Thailand looks to be struggling to bring in the numbers of quality tourists, those that spend well per day and leave money in the country for the small businesses. Sure, the Thailand's tourist numbers have improved, but what have they got in those numbers and is the current make-up of the tourist bringing in that hard earned cash to the economy. I think maybe not, per head per day.

OK Bangkok is reported to be spending US 4.8 Billion on its expansion for Tourism. Maybe a little to late.

But Bangkok will never come close to affording an international airport, the likes of UAE, or even that of Poland and you have to ask “Why”. To me Thailand looks like it losing its shine as a prime tourist destination for the Europeans and Westerners etc. and inevitably slowly sliding towards a third world tourist destination place, with the ATO playing with their numbers to appease the people of Thailand with false hopes of a brighter future.

The UAE only had 17.15 million tourists in 2023, less than half that of Thailand and look at what the UAE is prepared to invest. The same can be said about other Countries who have significantly less tourists (by number compared to Thailand), yet they are committed to heavily investing in their airport infrastructure, to welcome their Guests.

Governments / Airports around the World have recently and are continuing investing in their future. Thailand / Bangkok comes across as sitting back waiting for the future to come knocking on their door. I have a feeling that Thailand chickens will come home to roost over the next 10 years.

Dubai may have had only 17.5 million tourists BUT the total usage js far greater than that
"In 2023, DXB recorded a year-on-year increase of 31.7% in guest numbers, reaching a total of 86,994,365."

The UAE only had 17.15 million tourists in 2023, less than half that of Thailand and look at what the UAE is prepared to invest.

The UAE is a hub airport whereas BKK is a tourist destination

I am aware that Dubai is also a Hub as are a number of other countries in the region and they have grown that that part of the businesses from scratch and that in part their airport infrastructure investment is related to maintaining a viable Airline. Another thing that Thailand has struggle to do. Whatever the reasons, other countries are prepared to invest a lot more in their airport infrastructure than Thailand and more often.

Suvarnabhumi is now some 19 years old as an airport having opened in 2006 and it is showing its age.

Suvarnabhumi is currently ranked 58th in the World as an international airport, according to Skytrax. Changi is ranked No 2 with some 58.9 millions passenger moving through it in 2023 and 13.6 million arrival visitors and it is a much better airport than Suvarnabhumi.

I still think the Thai government is dragging its heels when it comes to its investment approach in airport infrastructure, if it is looking to compete with its neighbors and others for business
