US Passport Card

Post by Dakoda » September 12, 2024, 12:32 pm

Looking for info on US Passport Card
My son's passport has long expired and he being 15 years old has no need in a new passport. So my question is because the Bangkok Bank requires me to obtain a new passport for him, for me to access his direct deposit account because I renewed my passport which has a New Passport Number, will a US Passport Card for him, meet the requirement, so that I can get his Direct Deposit Account unlocked?
The difference is $100. dollars, Passport $130 Card $30. Stupid me left to much money in account, so its as good as gone. Also can I get him a passport card, without a new passport?
Thanks for any info on this

Ask BBL. However I doubt they will accept a Passport Card. Their requirement is a Passport.

And, to renew a minor child's passport requires a trip to the US Embassy. No mail-in requests. Good luck!

Thanks

From Wikipedia

"The passport card shares the same validity period as the passport book: 10 years for persons 16 and over, 5 years for children under 16.

So just think will wait it next month when he turns 16

I Think can do by mail, but will contact US Embassy, and ask.
Thanks again

Um...

I recall the passport card is only good for local travel to/from the US.

This from Google:

"The U.S. passport card may only be used for international travel by land or sea between the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. The passport card cannot be used for international travel by air."

I would think if the passport card cannot be used to travel in Asia, the banks here may not accept it either. For the extra hundie, I think I would opt for a proper passport. Please forgive me if I am missing something.

Thought Chiang Mai was closer to Udon. Wrong!
Has anyone done a passport renewal in Laos?

Dakoda, you should be able to renew your son's passport in Laos. I took my wife there a few years back and got her 10 year multiple entry visa to the US. Then, just last month I arranged an interview for a Thai couple to get their B-2 visa to the US. You can always call them and ask just to be sure. Surely there will be someone there who speaks English.

Big Thanks for info. Was just wondering about the mailing back of his passport, but being so close could always return to pick up when done.

being that the only use I or my son is to unlock his Direct Deposit Account to gain access to his funds, would think it would work!

But I can't see a valid reason that the account was locked in the 1st place, just because I renewed my passport and they gave me a new number. When I opened it 15 years ago, don't remember a passport requirement to get the account, just did it thinking when he was older and I was dead, it would make it easy for him to go to US if he wanted too, just by going to embassy and getting a new passport.

But I am old and my memory is NOT what it use to be!
So, will deal with this mess next month (Oct) after he turns 16.

Presently, trying to get my wife to deal with this mess!

There was a girl in PI which was very helpful over the years setting up account and other SSA problems, but she no longer works for PI US Embassy.
