Sat BB connection

what are the monthly costs for a sat' BB connection around the area ?
is it available ? (for those with no landline)

Yes it's available but quite an expensive option, however I have heard that the prices are coming down. I can't remember the name of the company off the top of my head, too much beer again last night! I think it's been mentioned in the computer section.

I use gprs which I'm quite happy with, it's an average 60kpbs but now 8 times faster since I've installed program from onspeed.com (à¸ƒ20 per year). Another advantage with gprs is that it's mobile and can be interchanged bewteen your desktop and laptop.

LA used to be on sat bb, i'm sure it was around 3200 per month and he's now ditched it due to cost, but marcus was saying that there was an article somewhere that mentioned something like 1000 per month in the future, but time will tell.

Lee, sure sounds like you've fallen head over heels for that onspeed program, it has been very highly rated in all sorts of tests that I have heard of, very clever concept indeed considering it's only a compression program, but it works, thats the main thing

Yep that looks like a great idea....just 1 caveat and and 2 questions:

It will do nothing for your latency but make it worse...not exactly great in Thailand anyway. Only important usually to anybody who does online gaming which I do not, but have other reasons to minimise it.

Is this streaming compression? Or is it taking multiple packets and then doing the compression and send to you?

Does it compress on your comp for upload and send to their servers. If not your upload speed stays the same... and its not good anyway on gprs without a class 10 modem... well even with one!

If I should ask them...tell me..but I cannot find this on their site

Probably best to ask them John, by all accounts they only seem to use their own terminology for the actual compression methods used

ONSPEED accelerates e-mail transparently without any user intervention, so you can use your e-mail program exactly as you normally would. It is compatible with any standard IMAP/POP3/SMTP client, including Outlook Express, Eudora, Mozilla Thunderbird and Netscape Mail. E-mail acceleration is enabled by default.

Please note: ONSPEED does not speed up e-mail for MAC and PocketPC users.

I did notice this on their site though, apart from the standard forms of compression for pictures and suchlike, they plan to offer the following:

We are constantly working on new algorithms to improve and enhance our service. By late 2005 we will have MP3 files, flash, and Mpeg4 for video available, achieving a 300% - 500% speed increase.

Surely to do this would sacrifice quality on an audio or video file

CSC means.... I think......that they do not further compress things that are already compressed, as an example .jpg have compression that shows up if you look closely as "jaggies".......straight lines become pixellated

Likewise mp3's are degraded versions of the original soundtrack, They drop the bits of sound that are not needed on, for example an ipod, cos you will not hear it anyway through the trendy white earbuds, and mp3's are much smaller files.

They can compress email??? Emails are tiny files, apart from any attachments...why bother. If they can compress 5Mb files so they upload like DSL it interests me more

Just for my personal use....for general web browsing and downloads it looks excellent
