With 57 responses so far, it looks like 5$% live within 20 km of Udon and 66% live within Issan. To me, this is a little bit surprising.

I say only "a little bit surprising" because the sense I get from most of the posts and responses on this board sound like they originate from Udon and the immediate surroundings.

When you think about it, it should not seem suprising that we vacationers "sound like" we live here.

I'm averaging about 2 months a year in Udon Thani. Since I am considering moving to Thailand I am interested in many of the same things you Udon residents are. Like most of you, I have traveled around Thailand more than the local Thais. The middle class don't seem to have the time to travel. The poor Thais have neither the time nor the money to travel.

While vacationing in Thailand I live in a hotel, most of my daytime is spent circulating among the Udon Thani bars, restaurants and shops and in the local internet cafes. I've looked at houses for rent and for sale. During a two-month stay in Udon Thani, I'll likely check out a half-dozen hotels that seem attractive. I price Thai appliances and cars.

Half of my clothes were purchased in Thailand. I think the price for a bucket of the popcorn at the Robinson Mall cinema is too expensive. I've found that the golf driving ranges are not likely to have left-handed golf clubs. I have a Bangkok Bank savings account and ATM card. The bay window of my kitchen in the US has curtains custom-made in Udon Thani. All my doctor and dentist bills for the last dozen years were paid to Thai clinics. I read the threads about living in Thailand and check listings of Udon Thani houses for rent and for sale on the internet. Most of my conversations in bars are with men who spend months vacationing in Thailand and Udon Thani.

I have lived in Khon Kaen for the last 5 years but have recently joined the Udon forum as the KK.com forum is very "slow" if at times useful.

Lived in Udon on and off for several periods up to 2004; near Suwanakuha in Nong Bua Lamphu, Lampang, and Bangkok before that.

Stuck here in Adelaide until some time next year while I finish studies.

Dreaming of wet season (at least it rains in Isan) and itching to get back to Udon, before heading to Lao for work.

1st choice should have read Udon Province. I ticked it even though I'm 80 km out.
