Do you feel secure in Udon?
Re: Do you feel secure in Udon?
They could throw an old carpet over the fence and render it useless, bin liner over the orange lantern would sort that out. Flip the breaker take the cover off the alarm and unplug the battery, that is if you have left it on silent.
I think passive IR lighting,CCTV cameras with night vision linked to a DVR with an alarm to your mobile.
I did mine all in for £300.00 although I did it myself though i think anyone could do the same.
No matter where I am I know if someone breaks into my house and I will have a video of the perp and I can call a relative to get there ( most 5 mins away) or the federales.

Electric fences have become legal in Thailand recently.BKKSTAN wrote:I'm not positive, but I believe that in conversations regarding this topic over the years,I sense that it would ,or is ,totally illegal and injuries resulting from it ,would have grave consequences for an expat especially!
Our company alarms department in sell and install them.
I don't however know what the take-up rate is on them though

Hi!
I want to Travel to Udonthani, Thailand. I know a girl I met online.
Do you think it is safe. I have been to Manila, Philippines 2 times now.
I would like to go to Thailand, but want to be safe. I only speak English.
thanks,
Jeff Pullis

If you survived Manila you'll be okay in Udon. IMHO no comparison. Welcome...jpullis wrote:Hi!

Re: Do you feel secure in Udon?
Guys, all the times I was In Udon I always found myself feeling as safe as anywhere in SEA, for some unknown reason I ended up retiring in the Philippines instead of Thailand but always keep abreast of goings on in LOS, if you think your unsafe now you should try the Philippines, just about everyone either owns or carries a gun, shootings are common especially amongst themselves over petty issues.
Here burglary is common and street holdups are also common, one of the worst jobs you can have is a armored car guard, they are always getting held up with automatic weapons. Walls with broken glass, concertina razor wire just slows them down a tad so you have to be proactive and secure your house well before bedtime. Have a assistant open your gate to your courtyard at night so you don't have to step out of the car on the street. Please believe me that the LOS is much much safer than here. Like some of the guys I bought a simple alarm which will sound if the perimeter is breached in the house, this will allow me to call the Police when they arrive (hopefully in a hour or 2) and in my bedroom I will be holed up with my wifes 12 guage ( yes any Pinoy can own a gun legaly here, just not a foreigner (farang)
Its not much better for locals here, so many poor that if you've got something someone else will want it.

Re: Do you feel secure in Udon?
The thing I liked so much about the Phils was that every shopping mall had armed security at every entrance that searched through every bag/purse/backpack upon entry. That was enough of a red flag for me. The beggars on every corner dancing for taxi passengers while stopped at red lights was another hint at society there.
Re: Do you feel secure in Udon?
I have been in the Phillipines 4 times,3 times I had things stolen!First time it was a watch and a small amount of money, second time it was my shoes and the 3rd time it was my clothes!I never seriously considered living there!
About 50% of the nurses I worked with in the USA were from the Phillipines,Although they were always trying to fix me up with a foreign relative, they also shared that when visiting their family in the P.I.'s,they never wore jewelery, carried purses or kept anything but small amounts of cash on their person.
One from a more rural area told me a story about a nurse friend with her American husband that were not only robbed, but the husband was killed during the night while sleeping by being stabbed from underneath the raised hut he was sleeping in!

Philippines? What part of Udon is it located in? My thread is being hijacked! You could start one about crime and safety in the Philippines on your own! And spell it correctly!

Re: Do you feel secure in Udon?
I have never felt threatened in Thailand by a Thai, I have however been threatened a couple of times by falang's but I guess what you really mean is does anyone living in Udon feel they may be asked to leave, or worse forced out ??
Re: Do you feel secure in Udon?
No, that's not what I meant, AA. I started the thread wondering how safe expats feel here in the confines of their abodes since Thai law doesn't allow farangs to own firearms and asking what they do to make their homes safer. There have been a lot of constructive tips given so, hopefully, a few did get something out of it all.

Re: Do you feel secure in Udon?
Sorry, didn't read the first post for quite some time. I seem to remember a year or so ago a story about a falang who shot an intruder, but can't remember the thread nor what happened to him ??

Re: Do you feel secure in Udon?
Well, it was an interesting look at the Phils having never been there, I gotta admit. Sounds like one huge Pattaya!
Hey, wait a minute. Think I just hijacked my own thread!

Just a bump up for a member posting about Udon being safe or not!

Re: Do you feel secure in Udon?
Hmmm...Reminds me. The wife has been after me for awhile about getting a stun gun and pepper spray for the car, house, and her bag. I can't recall the last time we went out at night (living outside Pattaya currently), so I haven't truly made an effort to find the street hawkers selling the overpriced ones on Beach Road.
I see them on eBay, but my US shipping address is in one of the very few jurisdictions where they are banned and none ship to Thailand.
Available anywhere in Udon? Cost?

Re: Do you feel secure in Udon?
I had a friend send over pepper spray from the US to avoid any shipping issues. Anyway, you can always make it, here's a link:KHONDAHM wrote:Hmmm...Reminds me.
