Renew drivers License AEK Udon

Cant imagine there's a way round this but, just in case....

My 5 year drivers licence expires in a couple of months. I'm stranded in the UK so, cannot attend any office in Thailand in person.

It's unlikely, but apart from paying something under the counter, is there anyway they can be renewed remotely?

What will happen if I dont renew? Do I go back to the shorter licence?

You can not renew your licence remotely.

If you have a Non-0 or any of the longer visas (not the elite) or you have a 1 year extension of stay you will get another 5 year licence.

Up to 1 year late it’s no different.
1 to 3 years you have to take the theory test
Over 3 years you have to take the theory test and driving test.

you can renew your drivers license within 1 year after expiration date as normal , so if your dl expires @ fe 30 october (couple of months ) you will have to renew before 30 october 2021 , so still time enough ...if not will have to test again

last night i watched a guy on youtube " rides4kicks " trying to renew both his licenses in Pattaya . what a nightmare the website apps would,nt work correctly or let you " log in " and the waiting list was anywhere from 60 / 90 days in the end he went to a visa agent , who would renew them both for him for i think 4000 baht . worth a look just to see how lucky we are here in Udon ..

Arrived by car to AEK Udon 09.15 to renew my five year DL for both car and motorbike.Already 4-5 people waiting.Some of them had done the Online test,me not.
Had all my papers ready,Yellow Book (two copies)PP same,two copies..and both of my old DL.Signed in,movie time me and aprox.6 Thais.I think it was about 1 hour of video,signed some more papers before paying in total for both 860Bath..time for photo op..5 min later done and dusted 11.40.

Can say that being abel to speak some Thai makes things more fun,and all the staff could understad my jokes in Thai.I said i will be back when i'm 67,hopefully

Tummy was the only one not happy,pedal to the metal to get home quickly..now just downed i big brunch

Happy experience..happy day..take care folks..//Alfie out..

With regard to the passport, what did you give them copies of? Just the photo/data page or do they want copies of the current visa/extension as well?

I read that they will only give another 5-year DL to those having long-stay rights like an extension. Otherwise, you get a 2-year DL.

Either a year extension or one of the Non Immigrate visas.

But the Elite Visa or extension from it doesn’t apply and only gets a 2 year temporary licence in the same way as VE or Tourist visas.

I know that it's all supposed to be the same but this being Thailand and all.

The rules are exactly the same but you could get lucky.

At AEK the movie is a variable requirement, my last time they didn’t bother to ask me to watch it, probably because I arrived soon after it started so would have been there about 3 hours. TIT YMMV

I didn't get the renewal as mid way through getting new visa. That is an other tale.
