Can't see any reason that they shouldn't be allowed to join Provided of course, they are EXPATS

Re: New Expats Club 2009???
One of the reasons that I chose to live in Thailand was to get away from my fellow 'Expats' - especially the 'organisers' and control freaks. I really enjoy our forum, and meet with a few likeminded 'expat' friends occasionaly. That is almost enough for me. At some stage I hope to meet with a few more forum members, but there is no rush.
Most of the expats I now see around Udon embarrass the hell out of me. Why do people stay here if they then don't like it so much that they wish to form an association to try and improve their lot?
It reminds me of the time near Udon bus station when an Expat 'bum' asked me for 50 baht to get the bus back to Pattaya - I gave him a hundred and told him to take a friend with him. (apocryphal)
I'll leave the 'associations' and 'organisations' to Pattaya and elswhere. I can imagine the reaction from the immigration staff in Nong Khai when the first expat tells them that there is now an association to see that he gets his 'rights' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A post that counters popular opinion on the forum - nice one. I see what you're saying about control freaks and organisers, I have an aversion of them myself. But why do most ex-pats in UTH embarrass you?

Re: New Expats Club 2009???
this is the 2nd time you send a post in saying you come to thai to get away from expats, and a few follow on sarcastic remarks, how bad some are ect,how apparrently some beg you for money, has anyone else had that in udon WHO USES THIS FORUM,i doubt it,you dont like socilizing with expats you do not want to join a club, glad you dont,as i think your a sad case, and i think there would be a lot of expats who would not enjoy your company either.

Re: New Expats Club 2009???
Some time ago (summer 2007) I mentioned that there was a farang down-and-outer hanging around the downtown bus depot (baw kaw saw). Others on the forum mentioned seeing this guy in town. He was drunk early in the morning, sitting on the pavement in his underwear and with half his butt exposed to all and sundry on the day I encountered him.
I did not feel embarrassed as a westerner in Udon for he had nothing to do with me. Some of the samlor drivers made a few jokes about him to me, but they too seemed to realise that he was a victim of his own addiction.
And, one night, my very good friend's son was getting his haircut at the barber shop across from Taewan daeng when another drunken farang was yelling and screaming at his Thai partner. The Thais in the vicinity were avoiding him like the plague. This barber shop no longer exists.
I would argue that the actions of these two gentlemen are the exception to the rule in the expat community of Udonthani. Indeed they would have no input on my decision not to join a social club of farangs in Udon if I decide to retire to that fair city.
The night market monthly meetings seem good enough; furthermore, there are ample numbers of Thais around amidst a Thai environment to remind everyone of the host country. I have only been to one of these meetings and got there about closing time but it was nice to say hello to LA, Saint, Big Wave Dave and....others. These are nice people.

Re: New Expats Club 2009???
Well there are good people here, 41 people on the ride list all farrangs not one jerk in the bunch. Wait a minute I'm on that list. There might be one. [-o<
Someoen wanted to know why people were not responding, I can only answer for myself as you noticed my response wasn't supportive.
I really had no support to offer, I'm sure the person was sincere in his plan. I really didn't want to discourage him. If he really wants this then he is going to have to do it himself, with time he will find people that will help becaue they share a common goal. But, nothing is going to happen just asking
Ride list I just started posting rides on forums, sit up rides with guys I already knew. Did ride reports always extended the offer to go with us. All of sudden new people started showing up. They eventually brought friends. It grew to 41. Most of the time six or seven riders show up for the rides. That fine those ar the ones who wanted to go. They are happy to be there and it just makes for a better time.
Today all I really do is post them and show up for the ones I want to go on.
so it can be done but nothing is going to happen until he does it himself.

Re: New Expats Club 2009???
Yes,, Now we have got a lot of response on the "New Expats Club in Udon Thani"!!! Thank you for the positive replies and even for those who think that, What!,Why! and "I dont need" anything like that. But to know what this was all about you still must read the announce, Rigth?
I know since many years back in organisations that there is always them who dont believe in anything exept them selvs and will never be a member of anything. Sad life, i must say. Ok you can find your fun and amussment at bars and other places but usually its for a short time and the day will catch you very soon again.
To join and be a member of an Expat Club is of course FREE for anyone and shall not force you to join against your will. I would say to those who are so negative to this, when we started up, come and have a look!! Maybe it change your mind!
Some of the e-mails took up about, Having my wife or my girlfriend with??? Why not? Its not up to me to decide, that is some question for the board but my opinion is this: Why leave the other part outside if she wants to go with you?
Some guys are also afraid(it seems) that now here comes something new! Maybe in can have affect on me in some way! People are always afraid and take distace to something new. This is normal, because if i join i maybe have to talk to someone or have to look at someone or maybe someone reqognice me as a later friend. So i will not join because of these reasons. Well, its ok! As i said its FREE for everyone to take their on steps!
I,ve been chairman for so many orgaisations before (now retired) like The Seemans Union, Swedish Transport Workers, Heart and Healt organisation and others in many years and it have been the same discussion in these org. Why shall i join?, What do i get out of this?, and other question or reasons for not joining!
The Expat Club shall absolutely NOT be political forum were you discuss politic! It shall not be any forum either to discuss questions of racism, Fire-arms or likely and it shall not be any Beer-club or likely!!
Should it turns out in something like that it will leave my membership!!Guarantee!!
How we going to proceed later on is up to many of those who replyed that they will join and help this and serious questions from people outside. What kinds of question i dont no today of course.
But anyhow,, Thank you again for ALL replys and those negatives just makes us a little bit stronger to go on with this process to start a:NEW EXPATS CLUB IN UDON.
May i wish everyone who read this a,, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

Re: New Expats Club 2009???
Well Lars, I can honestly say I usually keep myself fairly busy but there are days when I could use another outlet for my frustrations :-" I, as well as several others here, have a bit of experience organizing a variety of groups and could probably be talked into helping with a minimum of prodding. I agree with others that it should be started out small to see how it catches on and grow accordingly. I'm usually available except Mon., Wed. & Fri. when I play golf in the AM. PM me if you'd like my input but don't feel obligated. Good luck on your endeavor.
Re: New Expats Club 2009???
Sorry if my post is off topic, but I notice is several people who mention golf on here.
Sounds like is several expat societies who already have mini communities in Udon. Surely this is a good foundation for like mined people to oganise meetings / groups / workshops /etc.
As somebody who hopes to retire to udon soon (5 ish years) I'd like to see some expat forums / support groups, up and running.
Please continue with your efforts to organise some events (even if its's only the monthly night market)
Regards,
Dean.

Re: New Expats Club 2009???
I think it's important to remember that a fair percentage of expats in Udon are not members of Udon Map and are happy with their social lives. Asking questions on here will not give you the full picture.
Very few of my golfing associates are members and they have little or no interest in joining. We do our socialising during the week, negating the need or interest to attend such meetings as the monthly NM meeting.
I'm not sure that another social outlet would change our social habits as we seem to be happy with the social arrangements we already have.
