Re: Cable TV in Udon Thani
We have PSI in our shophouse.
A huge dish on the roof that looks like the sensor array on the Starship Enterprise, a lot of kit for the money we paid 3500 baht, the guys fitted it as part of the price.
Content all the Thai domestic channels, the only two my wife watches is Channel 3 and 7. Mainly games shows, movies, and soap operas all with the same plot, and cliched characters that make me wince. The Issan housemaid, always portrayed as buffoon, a mincing screaming ladyboy, the evil spoilt daughter who always drives a Mercedes Benz. The dad who wears a open topped shirt, with medal hanging on a 5 baht chain. The nasty mother who pouts a lot and is in constant conflict with the evil sexy spoilt daughter. The nice but dim boyfriend, who just so happens to be the CEO of a major Thai company, also driving a Mercedes Benz, who acts like a Gerry Anderson puppet or a large joint of Chern Chim Ham.
Lots of Indian channels, showing either Gurus sitting down doing sermons, or those musicals where everyone jerks their heads and dances for 90 minutes, a peck on the cheek from the boy to the girl. The End.
The Burmese TV is dire just Junta propaganda, classical dancing or puppet shows.
Lots of American God Channels, asking for your money.

There is not much difference between the two stoneman.
Udon (The list I gave on this thread) probably just about have the edge over Home on falang channels as I don't think anything over about channel 71 exists on Home. Plus Udon are actually working at the minute - which Home do not appear to be.
I do not think it is possible to pick "Udon" (or "Home" for that matter) as a selection of channels via satellite and have all of them there. However, I believe that these companies must pluck the individual channels out of the ether somehow. I guess it is by satellite so it must be technically possible - though way,way beyond my knowledge.
If you could (or someone else could) find out what type of receiving equipment the cable companies have then that might be a good way to start.....

Marty the trouble must be local. Home has been working for me all morning, or at least since 6 AM. But don't worry, I've been watching BBC we haven't been nuked yet (nor have we nuked anybody).
Bob, Home now has 77 channels. They recently added NBC Universal which has several American crime shows, including Law & Order SVU, Monk, etc., all in English with Thai subtitles. They have also just started to carry the "Jay Leno Show" daily. Unfortunately they are also showing "Australian Gladiators", for which I apologize to our Ozzie friends for importing this trash into their country. Not sure if they have a satellite setup available.

So, Nong Sam Rong Rd area and the area around Nong Prajak Park was out last night till this morning... then had it on for a little while this morning, then off, on, of, on. Why can not they post something to tell people what they are doing? "Sorry, we are having technical difficulties, we will be performing maintenance for an estimated one hour"... some such, to give some sort of heads up on the matter. No, that would be too difficult.
They shut the water off just before you want to take a shower... so...put a darn speaker on your truck and tell people in the area that you will be shutting the water off in 30 minutes.. take your shower now or out of luck.
Power goes out, no notice.
Intenet goes down, no notice.
They do not seem to care about communicating these events, mai pen rai. Is it really that difficult?
I DO NOT BELIEVE THESE ARE ALL "EMERGENCIES" and even if "EMERGENCIES" they could give some sort of message in many cases. Planning...productivity (not that it has anything to do with my life at the moment)

Yes rjj it certainly adds some excitement to your day. Has anyone ever tried to call the providers when there is an outage? I'm wondering what the response would be, if any. I've never bothered, thinking it would be the same as when I would lose my computer signal in the US, call the ISP Tech Support number, and get a recording telling me to check their website for outage information. IF I COULD ACCESS YOUR WEBSITE I WOULDN'T NEED THE OUTAGE INFORMATION! At least screaming that into the phone gave me some venting, but the recording was always unresponsive. So I gave up trying.

rjj, we use a plastic dustbin as a shower backup system - works a treat
We are on the edge of lake samrong and were told by home cable it would be too difficult to bring the cable to us at our location. After reading some recent posts they may have done us a favour.
Thinking about getting a motorised satellite dish. Anybody got any reccommendations?

Re: Cable TV in Udon Thani
Hello hello folks,-reply today from TOP UP Satellite TV: We are still working on with few different options. But we cannot finalized or speculate it at this time. There are few options of 5-8 channels English language with Thai sub that we are considering right now. However, most of the channel will ask for a high minimum guarantee for the number of subscribers plus a payment per subscriber monthly.
There are channels that we are working right now but not finalized yet such as Sci Fi, Universal (series), BBC knowledge, BBC Entertainment, Cbbies channels etc. Australia Network will be one of the channel that we will bring it back as well as Fox Crime (if possible) but this is not the final stage, just a preliminary phase. We will need to study in details which channels will fit in with the middle class Thai who prefer English sound track with Thai sub Title not Thai voice dub so the program will come with high quality but again with the reasonable price concept less than 500 baht per month (it should be less than this). The subscribers who have been with us before December 1, 2009 should have a special price offered from us. Another option will be maintaining only few channels with Samrujlok, Next Step Television or more and charge at only 199 baht per 3 months. This is in the process of working internally.
Kindly let me know if you have any questions na krub.
Regards,
Amornpaht

Re: Cable TV in Udon Thani
All in all it is rather dissapointing reading about the selection of options here for tv. PSI seems popular at the time in the wife's village and one was just installed across the street here in our subdivision. The verdict on True from her family and friends is a big no as it seems to go out quite often.
The options for cable don't seem much different from each other and neither seem to offer much. I guess for european ex-pats maybe it isn't too bad, but the lack of American programing, especially football is dissapointing. I do miss seeing which team shows up on sunday, the Dallas Cowboys or the Dallas Cowbelles. I don't think I would be staying up all night here to watch anyway, at least most of the time.
At least most offer CNN as I wouldn't watch faux news if someone paid me (although one should be aware of what the enemy is doing at all times). I guess it really doesn't matter much anyway, I hardly watched the idiot box when stateside.
Does anyone have a contact for PSI, Home, Udon or True that we can get trusted information from?

If You have family in Your homeland You can buy a SLINGBOX see Slingmedia.com and install with family. You will be able to watch TV via internet at an acceptable quality. I just installed it and it works very well.

Be careful - the quality will be very dependent on the upload speed of the computer in the US, and your download speed here.maxeboy wrote:If You have family in Your homeland You can buy a SLINGBOX see Slingmedia.com and install with family. The Slingbox sounds great. Unfortunately as it relies on a decent internet speed I'll give it a miss until TOT give us a realistic service [-o<
