Safety in Udon Thani

My thoughts. This is serious business time withdraw and wait for another day. No one would blame or think any less of them for leaving now. But, based on the atmosphire I heard on the radio broadcast last night I don't think they will. I also don't think the Government will back off either. They have painted themselves in a corner.

This is one of those time that I truly hope I'm wrong.

We are not a target.

But we just might be if too many farang appear to be taking sides . Up until this week I have never been asked what colour I am. Now every time I have a conversation with a Thai, its the first thing I am asked .
My advise . Keep your mouth shut, including on the forum. Report, but do not judge .They do not see a difference in farang, if one is bad we will all be subjected to the same scrutiny and treatment .I for one do not want to be a target just because someone else made a nasty comment about someone important to them .

Believe me I fully agree I have been asked as well. My reply (Mai Jai Tura Pom) not my business. Getting in the middle of all this is a no win for us.

Not something I would recommend. I realise you were being humorous but any display of support for either side could have disastrous consequences .Just in my area some previously prosperous businesses are struggling , while others are gaining trade, just because of the colour they are perceived as supporting. I know a likewise list of private enterprise is being prepared in Udon. So the danger is not only physical but could be financial . Whatever your sympathies, let them stay just that. Do not get involved in ANY way .

I don't actually have a nemesis in this conflict Tilo.

But if you are referring to the renegade Gen Kitthaya, I really don't care what happens to him now, because if he lives he will no longer be capable of causing damage to Thailand.

Even if there is it will be at the Government center and easy to avoid. I have been getting e-mail form friends wondering if we are ok. They believe this is all over Thailand not that square mile in Bangkok. Come and continue your studies, you will be just fine.

Well I guess my paranoia and feelings of insecurity 'no really likes or cares about me' are true.
I haven't received one e-mail or telephone call from family or friends back home inquiring about my safety .
Guess it's true: out of sight, out of mind.

As much as I don't feel threatened travel warnings are for a reason. So far the I have seen thus far speak of Bangkok

Washington DC is far more dangerous than Bangkok. Mountains out of molehills.

Unless you're a complete dolt, looking for trouble, you could go to Bangkok without much drama. I'm considering driving to Bangkok next week to drop off a family friend at the airport.

Give the protest areas wide berth and you'll not realize anything strange was going on. Media hypes things up. What you see in newspapers and on TV is the absolute best they could come up with. It's relatively confined and I've not heard of a single violent incident outside of downtown Bangkok.

Yep; I'll be going next Sunday for 36 hours, staying in Suk. Soi 19. I'm not the slightest bit worried unless the situation worsens expontentially. I have a hot date down Cowboy and it would be grossly impolite not to show up.

BUT I can guarantee you will not find me rubber-necking down Silom way !!!
