I posted this on my facebook page recently ...

To all my FB friends, :) I want to stay PRIVATELY connected with you. However, with the recent changes in FB, the public can now see all activities in any wall. This happens when our friend hits "like" or "comment", automatically, their friends would see our posts too. Unfortunately, we cannot change this setting ourselves because Facebook has configured it this way. Only you can do this!!! Place
your
mouse over my name above (do not click), a window will appear, now move the mouse on “FRIENDS" (also without clicking), then down to "Settings", click here and a list will appear. REMOVE the CHECK on "COMMENTS & LIKE" by clicking on it. By doing this, my activity amongst my friends and my family will no longer become public. Many thanks!
Paste this on your wall so your contacts would follow suit too, that is, if you care about your privacy

It seems that we all have to keep one step behind them to counter whatever scam they dream up

This can happen:
Rebecca Javeleau, 14, mistakenly made the details public when inviting friends to the event, creating an internet sensation that led to thousands of RSVPs from strangers.

Her mother, Tracey Livesey, 40, cancelled the October 7 event, but police have been forced to step up patrols in the girl's street in Harpenden amid fears some Facebook users will turn up, causing chaos.

Although I have a fb account, I rarely use it, except to see what new photos our daughter has posted. But I've come to the unscientific conclusion that:
If you use fb on a regular basis, you're more likely younger than 40. If you don't use fb on a regular basis, you're more likely over 40. If you hate everything that fb stands for, you're probably over 60.
Makes me think back to the early days of the dreaded calculator......how some people thought they were evil.
I venture a guess that the engineers who helped put curiosity on Mars wouldn't have been allowed within a mile of Mission Control during the Apollo project.....dressed as they are for everyday work today. It's a different world......I'd guess all of them have active fb accounts.

UK is the Top European facebook country. Im surprised that BKK is Nr 1, perhaps many IP's are registered
'as in' BKK.

I know that many Indonesians use facebook to get successful (international & local) business 'leads'.
They use private pages and business FB-pages, twitter etc..etc..for business purposes.

Parrot you're probably right on the demographics of Facebook. However there are always exceptions. I belong to a Facebook group for people who grew up in our neighborhood in Philly in the 1950's. We have a couple hundred members and I doubt that many are under 60, so a bunch of computer savvy old folks.

Loved your take on calculators. When I was in college those electronic calculators had not been invented yet. We used slide rules for calculations. One guy in our study group refused to use the slide rule. He had to do all the calculations long hand. He claimed the he was "comfortable" doing it that way. BTW that guy went on to be the CEO of a large chemical company. I often wondered if he ever lost his distrust of calculators. He is no longer with us or I'd ask him.

IF (big IF) I wanted to make contact with every person (alive) I ever worked with in my 26 years of Air Force.... 12 or so military bases and thousands of people, I'd be willing be bet I could do it in less than a few days using facebook. Everyone might not actually have a facebook account, but someone I know who does have an account would know that person and be able to get in touch with him/her.
Our daughter made contact with her entire Panama High School graduating class, more than 15 years after graduating, using fb within days.
I guess in some ways fb is today's version of the old rolodex file.

Continuing on the calculator theme, when I was first training as an accountant there were quite a number of mechanical adding machines and a few electronic calculators such as the ANITA, but cost wise in those days it was generally considered cheaper and more productive to use people with good arithmetic skills.

Back in those days I could quickly and easily add up columns of figures (pounds, shillings and pence) and only rarely make a mistake, an ability that I have mostly lost as electronic calculators, computers and accounting software became ever cheaper and more reliable.

For those who do not remember the ANITA, Wikipedia provides a bit of history and a few pictures:

The first Office job I ever had there were no ANITA as mechanical FACIT equipment ruled the roost in that particular organisation.. :D

As for FB...
I would consider myself as computer savvy as most, irrespective of age. I do have a FB account, but, unlike my username at UdonMap, not one that anyone who knew me would recognise me from - deliberately. :D :D
Anyone who I wish to remain in contact with from previous workplaces or social situations is aware of my primary e-mail account. That is the way I would like to keep it... :D

Still on the calculations theme (which is far more interesting than FB :D ) I remember my days working on the wharf with Oz Customs in the very early 70's, when calculators were becoming more generally available, albeit still relatively expensive.

One of our duties was to examine and take samples of imported alcohol - both bulk and bottled.

Part of the process was to calculate the overall volume of liquor, the litres of pure alcohol contained within (LAL), and then bring back to a standard temperature (because alcohol expands/contracts according to the temperature). The overall duty amount was based on these calculations.

We had a calculator allocated to our office, but despite the above being a quite complex calculation (for us mere customs officers at least), and the revenue being dependent on it, our supervisor would not allow us to use the calculator. He required us to give him the hand-written long-division, and long-multiplication sheets - before the ***** would check it with the calculator.

Barstaard. :D

Another strike?
Facebook asked to close undercover cop page

Victoria Police has complained to Facebook, saying a page dedicated to exposing the state's undercover police cars is putting officers and operations at risk.

The page has more than 12,500 followers and has dozens of photos and comments revealing the number-plates of unmarked police cars.

A News Limited report says Facebook has refused a police request to remove the page, saying it cannot stop people taking photos in public places...............

It doesn't take a facebook account to build a profile.........a good many members of this forum (and others) provide as many details as a facebook page.

Federal agents arrested Paul Ceglia, an upstate New York man who claims he's owed 50% of Facebook, Friday morning on charges of perpetuating a "multi-billion-dollar scheme" to defraud the company. If convicted, Ceglia faces up to 40 years in prison.

The move could end a bizarre legal saga that began in July 2010, when Ceglia filed suit in New York claiming that he paid Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg to build a website similar to what became Facebook, and that they agreed to split the company. Both Facebook (FB) and founder Mark Zuckerberg have strenuously denied Ceglia's claims.

Zuckerberg acknowledged signing a business contract in 2003 with Ceglia for a small programing job, one of many work-for-hire gigs that Zuckerberg accepted as a college student. But Facebook says that contact predated Facebook, which was conceived in 2004, and made no mention of the social networking venture.

The government's investigators agree. The real contract, discovered on one of Ceglia's hard drives, and "does not refer to Facebook in any fashion," according to the U.S. attorney's office.

Facebook and privacy

Post by harmonyudon » November 19, 2012, 1:15 pm

Talking about privacy in the case of the CIA chief, here is a student who took facebook into court.

For example :
Back in September, Facebook said it would disable facial recognition for European users, also under pressure from Irish authorities.

Zukerberg gained in 1 month $ 3.48 billion

Post by harmonyudon » December 3, 2012, 2:08 pm

Amazing. Anyone bought facebook?
Facebook‘s stock shot up from $21.08 a share on the first day of trading in November to $28 a share at the end of the day Friday, its highest price since July. Zuckerberg, who owns about 504 million shares of Facebook stock, gained about $3.48 billion as a result.

When Facebook first went public at $38 a share in May, Zuckerberg’s shares were worth $19.1 billion. In the following months, the stock dropped to less than half that IPO price to $17.55 in late August, pushing Zuckerberg’s net worth down to $8.84 billion.

A social media specialist made a amazing comparison: if Facebook is a country its now in the top 3 and perhaps next year the largest country.

Many things happen on Facebook and its sometimes worldnews. Like the murder on soy sampan, the murderer found out that his gfr was chatting on Facebook and the flight attendant who express her thoughts on Facebook about a family of
the PM.

This example is also interesting
Woman Learns On Facebook That Her Husband Likes Men

AND
A study earlier this year claimed that Facebook was cited in a third of all divorce filings.
