There have been 59,318 reported cases and 68 deaths so far this year.
Dengue cases could hit 120,000
he Public Health Ministry is launching a campaign to fight a sharp upsurge in dengue fever, which officials fear could hit a record high of 120,000 cases this year, reports said Monday.
In the past week, 5,276 new dengue fever cases and six deaths have been recorded throughout the country, with the highest concentration of cases in the northern region, state broadcaster MCOT reported.
Public Health Minister Pradit Sintavanarong said the campaign will employ more than a million volunteers from July 10-17 to combat mosquitoes in residential areas, schools and temples while educating people about the disease.

Dengue, also called haemorrhagic fever, is transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, which thrives in places where stagnant water is present, such as old tyres or empty bottles and in wet bathrooms and water tanks.
Opas Karnkavinpong, deputy director general of the Department of Disease Control, said it was working to keep the number of infections below 100,000 this year, but it could reach as high as 120,000.
There have been 59,318 reported cases and 68 deaths so far this year.
For the whole of 2012, 74,250 people were infected with the disease nationwide, with 79 deaths, according to the Department of Disease Control.
Dengue has been on the rise for several years in Southeast Asia, but health officials have warned that recent cases reported in such diverse locations as Madeira, Portugal, Nice, France, and Miami, Florida, could be attributed to global warming and the consequent expansion of breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes.

On pages 6-8 of http://www.boe.moph.go.th/files/report/ ... 071090.pdf, there's a list of all provinces shown in red, yellow, green. Red being the worst hit provinces, green the lightest. Udon is just one notch up from the list of green provinces, it shows a rate of 5.56 cases per 100,000.
As dengue fever goes, that can change quickly, but at least for the time, Udon is not a hot-spot for the illness.

Our village clinic nurse says there are 4 types of dengue. If I understand her correctly, you build up antibodies against each type as (if) you get it. So, feasibly, you could get it four times.
Ages up to 20 most susceptible, then folks in their later years. I'll guess that the reason many foreigners get it is they didn't get it when they were younger (like many Thais do). That's just a guess though.

My understanding is that it is the most dangerous AFTER you have had one type, and contract a different type.

From Wiki:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dengue_feverThe virus has four different types; infection with one type usually gives lifelong immunity to that type, but only short-term immunity to the others. Subsequent infection with a different type increases the risk of severe complications

Ministry declares war on dengue
he Nation July 15, 2013 1:00 am
With the dengue death toll already hitting 71 this year, the Public Health Ministry is fighting back to stop the spread of the Aedes mosquitoes that carry the disease.
"I have instructed all provincial public-health chiefs to closely monitor the operations to eradicate mosquito larvae at schools and hospitals," Public Health Minister Pradit Sintavanarong said yesterday.
As of last Tuesday, the dengue outbreak had struck 67,889 people and showed no signs of abating.
From July 3-9, new cases surged 30 per cent to 8,571 from the previous week.
Pradit will be writing to ask the permanent secretaries for education and interior for their cooperation.
"Our surveys have found that more than 10 per cent of containers with stagnant water at home and schools had mosquito larvae," he said.
Dr Narong Sahametapat, permanent secretary for the Public Health Ministry, said the public could call 089-204 2255 round the clock for advice.
All state hospitals were instructed to set up special corners to take care of dengue victims or patients suspected of being infected with the virus.
"We have also provided guidelines for hospitals on how to respond to dengue cases and when they will need to refer patients to better-equipped medical facilities," he said.
Chiang Mai, Ubon Ratchathani, Chiang Rai and Bangkok are among the provinces with the highest incidences.

A war room has been set up
Khon Kaen University student died on Sunday of severe dengue fever, five days after being admitted to the hospital.
Nontheethiya Phuwanon, 21, was admitted to Srinakarin Hospital on July 9, developing high fever and stomachache.
Chanchai Phanthongwiryakun, Director of the Srinakarin Hospital, said she was moved to the ICU on July 11 due to severe loss of blood, which led to failures of internal organs like kidney, liver and heart.
"It’s the severe and rare type of dengue fever," Charnchai said. "It’s under investigation where and how she was infected," he said.
The student was the first patient who died of dengue fever in Khon Kaen this year.
A provincial public health officer said that dengue fever infection rate in Khon Kaen has tripled from last year. Since January, 1,061 patients have been diagnosed with the fever. A war room has been set up, to monitor the spread on a weekly basis.

Teacher i know was ill, with all normal symptoms, headache, sore glands and hotter then usual, he went home then to a hospital where he was immediately put on a drip and given oxygen. Following a blood test he was found that he had dengue fever but with a twist he also had devoloped an enzyme from the Dengue , which was attacking his red blood cells causing them to explode, I feel that this is known as Haemorrhagic Fever, which if not curtailed will kill all red cells therefore you will die as nothing will be there to carry the oxygen arounbd the body.
Luckily following a short course of drugs he is now at home in Udon where he presumably contacted the fever in the first place.
So although it is widely reported nationally about the young lady, it is here as I foretold and care must be taken , any hot flushes, headaches and pain behind the eyes followed by a degree of tiredness caused by the blood fighting for its very survival then off to the Hospital you go and pray it is not too late.
His stay although brief ( less than 24 hrs ) was a mere 3000 Thb + unable to work for a few days but he is alive to tell the tale .
He lives in Udon and is only 35, This mossy has no compunction on age or sex, the nasty thing bite whomsoever where-ever, check all places with water and dont be scared to visit the Hospital , better safe than sorry.
take care people`. ALL are at risk.

They sprayed in my part of Nongsamrong this morning. HEAVY application. So far today, I have noticed about a 25% reduction of mossies on my porch, so not very effective I think, even though my carport entrance is slick with the oily stuff they sprayed. How do you notice a 25% reduction? I constantly spray when I see them on the porch, as it sort of traps them, so I am aware of how often I spray during the day. By the late afternoon, all was back to normal, with 3-5 of them each time I went out.

Spraying is like an afterthought, to little to late. Cleanliness is next to godliness they say and in this situation that is an apt expression , however as we live in a town, unfortunately we cannot make our neighbours abide by the same rules as ourselves, though it beggars belief me why ever not. Thais get as sick as we do only mnore frequently and death is sometimes the result, we just get very ill.
I visited a thai freind in town the other day and was bitten by the masses of mossies he had in his open space, so I left pretty damn quick, he had small pools of water lying around and they looked as if they had been there for some time, when I mentioned it he said he kept emptying the pots etc but when it rained they filled up. I didn't tell him that if he pout them upside down they woiuldn't fill, but just left saying I had to visit a sick friend who had just rung me. Maybe he will do something, but it does show the complete indifference the local population has to the situation outside their houses, inside is spotless but outside in many places it is a bloody tip full of places where our erstwhile mossy friends of all species love and enjoy.
