By world standards I wouldn't say very violent but we have high imprisonment rates and it needs to be a fairly serious offence before getting imprisoned. I'd accept violent like larger western cities.jai yen yen wrote:You must be from a very violent city, I live in a small town close to Vancouver which is a fairly large city and I can't recall anyone being beaten to death in a fight. You can try to justify the bs going on in Thailand but the reality is it is dangerous and a lot of people have been killed and attacked in the Issan area lately. Just walking around Udon I can see the unfriendly attitude from a lot of locals, definately not like things were 12 years ago when I first arrived. You don't have to believe me, just read the papers.GT93 wrote:I don't assume it's 7 Thais. It might have been just one or two. If he was attacked by 7, he was probably fortunate he was beaten even more severely.
It seems that there's a young fella murdered in a fight in my city every second weekend. If Grippa Burke and Knuckles Kapone need to accompany us in Udon, they'd be needed in New Zealand as well.
My perception of Vancouver is that it's like the US - heaps of serial killers with cops not that interested in hunting them down. I'd extrapolate from that that Vancouver is a violent place. I've not done any research to conclude that, but it's just my impression from the sensational news stories that we occasionally get from that part of Canada. I've regrettably never been to Canada so I don't claim to be well informed and the Canadians I have met have been top blokes although I thought your PM who recently visited NZ was a weirdo.
It's usually knives in Auckland that cause the deaths amongst young people. I feel far far safer in Udon than Auckland. I suspect the bigger issue in Udon is farang bashing their partners rather than Thais bashing farang. Alcohol and domestic violence tend to go together. The Thai partners put up with it because of the farang's deep wallet.
I first lived in Udon 2002. I'd accept things have changed - one reason being there are far more scum bag farang in Udon than the past. But I'd advise some perspective. Try walking around farangland at night now. In Auckland it's no longer safe for parents to permit a teenage child to have a party at their house at night. You'd need security guards and there's a risk of a riot because of social media promoting the party. It's just not remotely worth the risk.
