Kalamazoo was amazing step forward.
Place card on ledger book with carbon paper in place .... write on card and you had a a card system and a back up ledger to check ..... cant ever remember a day when the two managed to match without going back to find the mistake ....usually a miss typed number on the adding machine ..... thank heaven for paper trails

Back in the good ole days of Main Frame computers, my business card had on it, dare I say it, " IT Consultant"
Information Technology sounds better than Computer Operator.

Bloody hell, back in my days there was no such thing as IT Con.....

All we had was the "Fox 3" (Foxboro Mass, USA, Instrument Company) a DEC PDP 11 Mainframe (Baged) and a ---- load of hole punched paper tape, the control consol was made up of 16 switches & 16 lights - if they were serviceable and my title was instrument fitter. Had these dinosaurs installed in places like the Swan Brewery in Perth, Hamersley Iron Ship Loading facility Dampier WA, Hamersley processing plant in Tom Price WA etc.
Ones tools consisted of a multi meter, roll of circuit board wire and a pen like rotation device and the ability to code in Hex.

Aha! Wire wrap boards and hexadecimal. So that's how you got hired by GSI for their seismic crews. You mentioned 'hex' and the job interviewer already had that down on the "hot-list" of questions. The old TI 980B, the core of the FT-1 was a hexadecimal machine but I only needed to know the startup code in the morning and then put the kettle on. Then we put the plotter in Bolshy Walshy's office and because you knew more hexadecimal codes than me, you became the 'night operator' a couple of times a week. Them was fun daze.

I read Alan's message as somebody that saw value in networking, I learnt a couple of useful tips from him.

However, in jumps a number of forum members that first of all assume a sexual motivation, then because Alan used the term consultant to describe my business role, that is latched onto, as another vehicle to deride. I do not think there would be too many places on God's earth that has so many individuals that simply want to have ago for no valid reason. Is it the water, or is there something in the air in Udon that attracts an over representative cohort of pathetic types?

Pressing a bootstrap button is not consulting, programming is not consulting, Systems Analysts start to move into that space. But true consulting is understanding a client's needs, then providing advice on how to overcome those issues.

Nice one Alan, I enjoyed the meeting as well, you always get a gem out of meeting with intelligent people. In the past I have participated in similar breakfast groups. Take no notice from twisted individuals like some on here who have no moral compass and only seek to disrupt.

Not sure about this "Consultant" thing, if you find yourself being consulted then I guess one has the right to call one self a consultant.
If you really want to out rank other people then maybe "Expert" would be more fitting or simply Dr, Prof, BSc etc, which sorts out the men from the boys in many people's minds.
