I think you will find that of all the people the Tourist Police (and Volunteers) have helped, have done so because they were asked for their help. They do not have the same agenda as the regular police (i.e. murders, robberies, shootings etc) and are more more focussed on helping foreigners (residents and tourists) and the reason they walk around major Tourist areas is so that people can approach them and ask for advice and the huge number of people who have been helped would quite rightly contradict the negativity some people feel for those who want to help others.
Ask the guy who got his stolen money back if he agrees, or the one who got his mobile phone retrieved when it was stolen by a bar girl. Ask the farang who was sent to Udon prison if he appreciated the farang tourist policeman visiting him (when nobody else did), Ask the farang guy who had the dispute with the Thai car driver who damaged his car if he was grateful to be able to converse in his mother tongue and explain what happened and see that those to blame really did get the blame, ask the villagers in the Loei mountains if they were grateful for the blankets donated in the cool season, donated from the Tourist police - etc etc
etc .... Yeah those Tourist Police are a really bad bunch - obviously !!!

Ask the Scots guy in udon approx 4 years ago who got ripped off at his wedding night for the sin sod by the wife and family.

Family arrested at Korat on their way back to Pattaya and thrown in jail and approx 40% of the cash refunded to the Expat.

job well done......

Paul,

Do you need a work permit to be volunteer police officer?
I think they do a good job, especially as Udon ex-pats are so far away from the consulate services in Bangkok and Pattaya.
A good example you have already mentioned where the volunteer farang policeman visited the guy who was banged in Udon's monkey house.

Really? In Bangkok and on the highways, police target falangs for money stops! If you have not experienced that yet,it is because you don't drive in those areas or you have not enough experience yet!

Funny, I thought this was Udonmap, not Bangkokmap.

Personally I have found the police in the Udon area pleasant to deal with.
As for BKK, I don't live there, so not concerned about them.

You are correct farang patrolling, I know the gentleman concerned, who sseks to assist not to knock heads or other euphemisms aimed at them by the ill-informed and un-educated.
They are there to provide farangs with a degree of assistance and to ensure fair play, when needed. The tourist police themselves are Royal thai Officers seconded to the job and on the whole do a very good job, they are undermanned and need all the help they can get. There are many farangs who agreed to help, and do so by being around and in some cases patrolling. These farangs are accepted by the police as helpers NOT police Officers, some have previous police experience soem are just willing to help there fellow countrymen.
Knocking them is a futile exercise as you never know when you need one. Those that know them are quite happy, only those that have something to hide feel worried, but then thats their problem.
Doc, yes is in China but was proud of the service he provided, although some people did not like it.

udon police seem to be fairly honest. no money stops without cause. as opposed to bkk, through experience, stopped twice within 500 meters for no reason and tea money donated. i will no longer drive in bkk, except entering and leaving, not that i drove much anyway, but stopped for being a farang too many times.

udon tourist police, thai and farang version, are definitely appreciated and a plus to udon thani.

 That was uncalled for Galee!Or do you have the opinion that only issues with Udon province or city should be discussed on this thread??I have been targeted on the the road from Nk to Udon several times! And my post was directed to cryptics comment which just stated police, not Udon police!I have never had that feeling with the city police in Udon or NK!The fact that your not concerned about anything that doesn't just effect you seems selfish to me!Maybe you should only read those things pertaining to Udon,so you are not getting lost on the forum!

too easy and convenient to have own car while out and about. usually end up in phuket, or chumphon if water is co-operating. or phuket, my only extreme luxuries to myself and family. 3 months out of udon when possible. enjoy my retirement as originally envisioned. though no complaints with being stuck with those two following me around all the time.

on topic. a few money stops on the way, usually get pass without a problem. sometimes stopped simply for being a farang. hard to complain, as i am usually speeding on the highway, if not at the time being stopped. only twice i know i wasn't speeding, but donated to the officers beer tab. the rest were justified, or better, missed me. just need to be out of that right lane when approaching money stop, or assumed you are speeding since in fast lane. i was passing someone in the left lane, and who do they pull over, the guy i passed in the right lane. almost felt sorry for him.

Stan, yes it was uncalled for.

Reason I was little off with you. I thought you were out of line with Cryptic's comment.

You intermated that his opinion was irrelevant because he might not have enough experience. Every ones entitled to an opinion, no matter how much experience they might have.

:? I didn't intimate anything,I said that if he had not experienced it yet,it was because he didn't drive in those areas or didn't have enough experience yet

At least your attempt at playing forum policeman was on a thread related to falang policeman! [-X

Forgot the cardinal rule of Udon map.

Do not disagree with Stan because he's never wrong.

I have a condo is soi 8 Sukhumvit (Nana area) and an apartment here in Udon and have been fluctuating between the two for the past 3 years. In BKK I have a car and bike and a bike in Udon and get around a bit. Have been stopped in both places whilst on the bike and when they see I have a licence, bikes registered and have a helmet on, they let me go. There are also Thai riders that also get pulled up (are you listening Bkkstan) and we see dozens of them pulled over and given tickets or pay. As far as I know Stan, bikes are not allowed on BKK highways, dont know where you got that idea from. Besides I was responding to a Udon thread, why did you bring Bangkok up. Bkkstan trying to worm his way out of this one.

So why were you targeted on the NK road. Were you wearing a helmet, bike registered, you have a Thai licence?. Police do have the right to pull people over for checking their bona fides, nothing wrong with that is there. Did you have to pay anything?. So what about all the Thai riders we see pulled over, you think the Police pull them up just to say hello. Thai riders are given tickets and have to pay also you know. Do the right thing and nothing happens to you. Police do not target farangs as I said before.
