Re: Rip off the farang
Not being particularly practical or technically minded, I’m always a concerned about being ‘had’ for things I don’t comprehend well e.g. motor repairs, plumbing, electrics. But that was the case back home too. I have the added complication of communication here.
Most of the worries involve ‘services’ of one kind or another. I’ve paid the Thai price at parks having flashed my Thai driving licence. No problems shopping at places like Tesco’s or Index, where the prices are laid down for all to see. I’m not concerned if the corner shop charges me an extra baht or two, but for major purchases, invariably I’ll use the TW or her family’s knowledge to guide me. I have a farang neighbour who has paid well over the top for building work and getting administrative things done quickly at the Amphoe (latter stinks in my opinion) because he’s in a hurry and money to throw away.
I think it fair to say that being here a while, you get the feel for what things should cost. If it an area you’re not familiar with, an emergency, when you don’t have time to shop around, then the likelihood of being ripped off increases.
If I said my biggest rip off here after 7 years occurred when I was very wet behind the ears, slightly drunk and in a hurry – well, you can fill in the rest!

Re: Rip off the farang
I'm not going to be drawn into the taxation element as regards to the entry prices into national parks etc, but I can only say that I have never had to pay Farang prices on presentation of Thai driving licence and a big smile
Re: Rip off the farang
Went to Pattaya Park a few years back now.Infact when the revolving restaurant first opened,So guess about 12 years ago.....Went to pay window with TW And Girl there said 250 for Lady Thai,500 for FALANG.....I Produced Thai driving licence and I got 250 Baht DISCOUNT.....
Re: Rip off the farang
Yes having read all the posts good and bad, I was in fact talking about the Govt parks and other such places, I was pointitng it out that it is blatant, notwithstanding that many do not offer good services and in many casea there are none offered even the toilets are to say the leat disgusting.
However be that as it may, this is Thailand and we learn to accept the system, flawed it may be but it is theirs.
Surpirse to find after speaking to many Thais who have holidayed overseas they are amazed that the locals pay the same as tourist in many countries notably USA,UK, most of Europe as well, they realise just how racist their own polices are.
When Thailand complains that tourists are not visitng their sites ( which they do) it does make one wonder if they fail to see the reason, but not too worry, i do visit the occasional park etc: and pay whatever is asked sometimes less on production of Thai licence or not depending on the man in the cubicle.
It always reminds me of Doi Suthep, haveing managed to walk up all those damm steps, to be funneled to the right to pay 30 baht, felt like an insult, but it was worth it, why not ask at the bottom eh?

Re: Rip off the farang
Well guys plenty of wonderful things to see in Thailand that are absoulutely tree. Take the trip from Dan Sai to Nan breathtaking views. cost your fuel. By the way yes the sex is a good thing here, but not enough to stop my life completly start over in a foreign country I was getting laid in the states. That was not the deciding factor. maybe it's good for a vacation. But not the life style I want. I remember my first trip to Pattaya and my impression if this all ther is no way will I move here. Something about the people made me come back and find Issan.
I was going to post some photos form photo bucket of places I have been free, but it's cooperating, so just cjheck out these threads just go get off the beaten path a bit.

The run to Nan

This I paid for but I wanted the boat ride and it was worth every baht. You can just drive to another village and it's free.

Re: Rip off the farang
A bar owner was asked recently to pay 2 year's rent up front instead of the 1 year stated in contract reason given"frang have big money, husband say ask maybe frang do".I know this lady well and would describe her as udon's Donald Trumph, not short of a bob or two just plain greedy. The two tier system is wrong and insulting to frang wheather resident or tourist.
Re: Rip off the farang
what about KEY money I never heard of such a rip off until I came here. as for attorneys
they are a f*** joke I bought a condo in Jomtien and hired attorney to write the contract
well hold & behold the seller had a 10 year note on the condo but gave me 5 years to pay it off
when I found out there wasn't much I could do except walk away and lose my deposit and monthly payments to the bitch & her American expat hubby who lives in Taipei as a school teacher
I guess he learned the Thai ways real fast it called lie lie lie & more lies to cover your azz

Well, had a look at the chedi 101 thing in Roi Et that Git posted, quite spectacular. There are sights to see, if you can find them. I remember being impressed my first day in Udon, walking into the park at Nong Bua.
Also, maybe you should pay, but not always asked. Did Sala Kala Kew, no attendant, couldn't pay. Udon Thani museum, only saw the sign for price as i left, not asked to pay although staff on duty and talked to them.
Yes, double pricing annoying but can be avoided by choosing to go elsewhere, or just pay if you think worth the price. In UK same for everyone - expensive! As for rip offs elsewhere, only Tuk-tuk drivers first visit, now i haggle in Thai, even offered 10 baht for trip by one driver. Shops, not ripped off so far (i think).
In London, street vendors selling ice cream, snacks, touristy nik-naks etc. are not usually British anyway, will rip-off anyone if they can. Surprisingly, one of the cheapest tourist spots for a tea and a cake in London is in the Houses of Parliament cafe!

Re: Rip off the farang
The “two-tier†pricing has nothing to do with racism. It is common practice with most resorts/tourist areas, in my experience. For example, as a former resident of Las Vegas, Nevada, I almost never paid full price for meals, shows, drinks, or hotel bookings. My mailbox was always full of offers for two for one dinners, half price show tickets, reduced rate hotel rooms, etc. Most of these stipulated “available to Nevada residents onlyâ€, and you were usually required to show your Nevada drivers license. Even at my favorite strip bar, I merely had to show Nevada ID and got half price on the cover charge. Sadly, that didn’t apply to lap dances.
Conventions are the worst. I have booked rooms for visiting friends for as low as 45 USD per night, when the Conventioneers were paying upwards of 250 USD for the same room, same date. This at places like Ballys and Caesars Palace. Also when I was a resident of Colorado and skiing weekly (I owned a condo at the slopes), I never paid full price for a lift ticket. So, this is common practice. It’s just not publicized, and the tourists never know about it unless they have friends who are locals. At least the Thai are up front about it and in some cases publish the rate discrepancy.
So we’re talking about paying 100 Baht to enter an attraction. That’s USD 3.50. At most attractions in the USA that wouldn’t even cover the parking fee. As far as purchases go, haggling over price is a time-honored tradition in most venues.
So give our Thai hosts a break, and if you can’t afford three bucks, take advantage of all the free sights, as a previous poster has so eloquently described.

Re: Rip off the farang
Less than two years ago, the last time I visited Doi Suthep, I took my non-Thai son to Doi Suthep. Upon reaching the ticket booth, I smiled and asked politely in Thai if we have to pay if we live in Thailand along with presenting my Thai drivers license. He told me no and pointed me to the entrance.Khun Paul wrote:It always reminds me of Doi Suthep, haveing managed to walk up all those damm steps, to be funneled to the right to pay 30 baht, felt like an insult, but it was worth it, why not ask at the bottom eh?

Re: Rip off the farang
I have read many post about farang being double priced on things. I would like to tell you my story.
I wanted to buy a bicycle to get around town. I went to the LA bike shop near Central plaza. Picked out a little 26in 6 speed. The guy didn't speak English but tapped out the price in his Calculator...4200bht. Then a minute later he taps out another price...4000bht. OK. I needed a bike helmet and picked a LA brand that matched the black and blue color of the bike and the color of my body when I fall over. On the calculator again. 750bht. but, wait with the bike, 700bht. All this double pricing going on right there before God and everybody. The nerve, the audasity. Will I buy another bike from him, damn straight I would.

Re: Rip off the farang
nice to see a posative post about thais pricing policies , see there not all bad !!!!!! on a recent visit to mukdahan , we went up the tower , for a great view of the town and mekong . i was absolutely disgusted that they charged me exactly the same as the thai wife . a whopping 20 baht , which included entry to the museum displays as well . . to add insult to injury , later that day we visit phu pha thoep national park , where i have to say they nearly made it double pricing , but not quite , me 50 baht , the wife 30 baht , truck 10 baht . i told them in no uncertain terms that if they carried on charging this way , they would lose a lot of custom , but was informed that all prices had been reduced by 50 % recently . thats not the point i said , you should be charging me double !!!! but he was having non of it . so i pays the kings ransom of 90 baht for a wonderful park , you could quite easily spend all day in and not get bored , several fascinating rock formations , a massice rock slab that covered over a a good dozen rai , waterfalls , dinasoar fossils , two caves , one with prehistoric hand paintings dating back 3500 years , various plants only found in that area , fantastic views ect , ect . great day but i came away with a nasty , nasty taste in my mouth , that i had been shafted once again !!!!

Saint, this park in which you got suckered by not paying a whopping 20 baht more, is it the one in that video I put up by Tai Oratai...on the ' Isaan Entertainment: where is this' thread?
Show them that you are a man of principle and never visit that park again unless you are prepared to dump a truckload of worms.
The audacity of some Thais astounds me!
