The big problem I have with this story is the actual theft of a 150kg safe, as it would appear that there does not seem to be a logical explanation as to how the said thieves removed this overly large object without causing damage on route, unless of course
1 There was no such thing as a 150kg safe
2, There was a safe but considerably smaller
3, The story of the safe was touted by the owners to justify an insurance claim.
While I truly believe they were burgled, in my experience the truth is not as interesting that the reported loss.
The only thing missing is the actual evidence of the theft and the way it happened, either the Police are keeping that under wraps, or the simple fact is they just do not know. As we have all seen the crass incompetence of the RTP in most incidents I'd rather err on the side of ,' that they do not know' , which is probably nearer the truth than anything else.

Surprised no one has picked this up .Listening to Udon radio last Friday it was announced that the culprit has been caught, a 43 year old who admitted to the burglary and when police raided his home they found evidence of many similar offences committed in and around town. He apparently spent three days sussing the house out before breaking in .
The news did go into further detail but as I was on the phone at the time I missed most of it. However I can confirm the suspect is still in custody.Perhaps one of our Thai readers can find out more in the Thai language press .

Ageing is a privilige denied to many .

Marvellous
hopefully he can confirm our suspicions that the safe was only a small one

My housing area, Sri Thani Village, is installing security cameras on the main streets. They have also installed a lot of new street lights. It may not resolve the problem but can certainly help.
That have also started a campaign against loose pets. It has helped some but still a few small dogs running around

No doubt this will lead to a rapid retraction and apology from our resident forum RTP basher.

I know who I would prefer to do an investigation if ever we are unfortunate enough to be robbed.

Yes the RTP need a pat on the back for a quick result. Will be interesting to see the end result of the investigation. They will leave no stone unturned in the quest to find the missing gold and 3.5 million baht, but alas I feel nothing will be found. But always hopeful for the families sake.
On the safe. I am having trouble getting wheels off mine, wouldn't be hard to roll it any where. Would be good to see a pointing finger at the found safe.

Hope the robber admits to the theft of the watch also,be interesting if he said there was not one in the safe

One is not too surprised of the swift apprehension of a thief, however the proof of the arrest will be in the substance of the goods found or otherwise, I am not saying that the RTP are bad, in some areas they are very good, but and it is a big but, if the results are monetarily driven then results will always be positive.
This chap apprently has done a few burglaries so it is no wonder that eventually he has been caught.
With regards to street lights the provision of these can and does give people a false sense of security as they think that the criminal will not exactly walk down a unknown street if it is lit, well when we had some power cuts in the UK, burglaries and theft generally from houses were down in the night-time, as the villians could not see where the hell they were going.
the locals had no need fo lights and if they did, they were challenged by others as to what they were doing , so it is alright installing lights and cameras, but then you have to have good competent and vigilant staff manning the base to ensure they see what is happening.
in my travels around Thailand and even elsewhere, it has been a general rule of thumb that security provided is only in reality a person who is supposed to be alert and checking the estate on foot regurarly. Cameras are a tool to complement said staff.
In Thailand even in a couple of high end and very expensive estates, entering uninvited is a nod or a wink to the guard that is if he is even awake. You might not be able to drive in, but you can certainly walk. I'll stick to my dogs thanks

I did a search of Thai news sites online....but can't find any news of the event. Anyone have a link?

According to the articles below, police arrested a 38 year old man on 11 Dec with a variety of watches, weapons, and drugs. The way I read the article......the jewelry is from a variety of robberies in/around Udon, most from a robbery that occurred on 30 Nov in moobahn Sritani (ศรีธานี), Udon, while the 26 year old owner was out visiting her mother.
That robbery involved valuable watches, diamonds, jewelry and purses. The girl shown in the Thai Rath photo below is the victim of the 30 Nov burglary.....and I assume the watches and jewelry is from that robbery.
Police believe (that's how I read the article).....that this robber 'may be' connected to the robbery on 8 Dec from the home of the British man and his wife......but I see nothing in the article that pins him directly to that robbery. The article does mention that specific robbery........but I believe it's just conjecture on the part of the police at this point that the man is connected.
My Thai being my Thai, I could have it all wrong.
I'll take ten lashings and a humble apology if I have it wrong.

Im interested in the use of " Gas "
As someone who has used anaesthetic gases both within and outside hospitals, I cant work out how these would work.
Houses / rooms are not a closed circuit which is how all clinical gases are administered.
Using CO2 , might / could make some one sleep a little deeper, BUT all gases are diffused into the atmosphere in milli seconds from being released. one open window, or leaking door seal or open door , would be enough to debunk that.
To reduce someones O2 levels, to induce a decrease in cons state , and also them to still breath, BUT then allow the burglar to also enter the same environment, ( ok, a close circuit respirator / BA ? )
Smoke canistors would work, but no suggestion that smoke residue was found...

Please inform the BIB to cross off this line of inquiry from their investigations. Anyway, I think the couple were out shopping or something when the crime was carried out.Postby rick » December 10, 2014, 10:44 pm
Gassing victims to allow a burglary is a bit of an Urban myth. Firstly, how do you ensure you administer the correct dose? Anesthetists spend years learning how to do it under controlled conditions, and still have to be careful the patient doesn't die. Trying to gas an entire household would be very hit and miss, with frequent deaths or comas; and lugging around gas bottles and breathing apparatus during a burglary is insane. There are lots of claims about gassing, but very little evidence.
OT..............

A few years back I was Googling the name of one of my old friends back in the States when I happened upon a press release from the Manila Times. I read that he had been approached late at night while returning from a night of bar hoping by two men who claimed to be undercover police. He was stabbed in the stomach, robbed of his gold Rolex watch and cash and left for dead. I called him up immediately in Houston, Texas to ask how he was doing, and he was laughing uncontrollably as he told me that it was all a scam. He had paid a Filipino reporter to create a false narrative and publish it in the newspaper during his last business trip to Manila so that he could present it to his insurance company and rip them off for several thousand dollars. Greed will make people do all sorts of things and there is no end to what the human heart and mind can concoct when there is money to gain without having to do an honest day's work to get it.

Yep, it was the real thing. He collected on his claim and continued to wear the watch. Don't know who got it after he croaked!merchant seaman wrote:Who got the rolex watch, or was it a knock off?
