Thank you jingjai too! My wife and I just got done viewing all the pictures from the links you provided. What memories! Sunny Gems outside of the Main Gate - I had a couple of rings made there (and still have them!). The Junpen Club - I could always tell what time it was by the song the band was playing because their set list never varied.

I was in Udon in Jan. 2007 and visited the Paradise just to see if the pool was still there. It was and is just off the parking lot in front of the hotel. It certainly has seen better times. Didn't look like it had been in use for quite a few years. Back in the early 70s, we Nonsoong GIs referred to it as The Bay of Pigs.

Jingjai, thanks for the photo links. For all you aircraft buffs/trivia fans, Campen's Flightline activity 0068.jpg is an Air America Volpar. It is a Twin Beech C-45 that started life as a tail dragger with jug engines. Volpar Corp installed tricycle gear and replaced the engines with turbo props. I'm sure there were other modifications as well. It was a popular bird with those who flew it. At least that's what the AA guys I knew said.
ahhhhhhhhhhh the memories
My first trips to the Paradise Pool were when I was TDY with the 307th TFS from Homestead, Fl. for Linebacker I in the summer of '72. It was THE place to go when the bars closed and you still had a little party left in you. The bargirls who didn't make the "frag sheet" for that night were there, and the atmosphere was pretty laid back. Loud, drunk, but laid back. I went back to visit once when I was at Korat in '73, and was stationed again at Udorn in '75 until they closed the base, and it was still hoppin'. Thanks for the great pics.

When looking for a hotel near Rajabhat University, I see the Paradize Hotel (spelled with a z). This must be a typo. This is the old Paradise Hotel, right?

Re: Paradise hotel and heart shaped pool?
The started about 12 months ago demolishing the inside, the small accommadation building on the left is gone, as well as the animals to a BKK zoo, in its place will be car parking the main building is 6 months off opening as a Spic and span new Hotel, the old building on the right of the Hotel has been demolished and bihind that is a new pool going in.
The top floors are just about finished, the foyer has a water feature, and some 150 rooms will be opening July.
Front of the paradise, main entrance to the left, pool area to the right, they were pouring to pool base today
Right side of hotel, new pool is in front of the Pickup
New wing in background, with pool in front of the building, between pickup, hotel to the left, main structure was retained and gutted, only problem they have just 1 lift which is 4 foot square
One of the rooms, Sad the wall render looks like it still the same as 40 years ago, its all new , but a rough finish in rendering the walls
Nice big tiles in the bathroom, and some timber shutters and walls
One of the bedroom wall finish
There seems to be a LOT of Hotels been opening, or due to be opened, I just wonder where all the clientele are comming from, like shops and malls plaza, they just keep building them

The new Paradise Hotel is looking good, I wonder if they'll keep the name or change it.
I agree new accommodation is springing up all over the place, not surprising really because IMO the demand is there, especially for lower to mid-end budget.AussieBoy wrote:There seems to be a LOT of Hotels been opening, or due to be opened, I just wonder where all the clientele are comming from, like shops and malls plaza, they just keep building them
