Val, What was Pattaya like in the 70's?

How would you define a Farang Kee Nok that is now moving into Udon?

How has the locals perception of us in your eyes, changed for the worse?

I hope it won't change too much for the worse 8-[
Overwise we might have to trade our houses for RV's and move around Thailand fleeing the skirt chasers and kee noks :D

Tony
Hi Tony, the definition of Kee Nok has been the subject of a whole forum column with postings from many farangs and Thai which I mostly agree with so I don't think it needs further clarification from me.
Pattaya in the late 70'? Well I can only speak of the things that I was personally aware of and which affected me. For a start the beach rd didn't have motorbikes for rent from end to end so you could always find a parking spot. The town itself hadn't spread out very far, so it was possible to get away from the touristy developement easier. The main type of tourists were elderly couples including those that come on the large liners that anchored off the bay. These type of people were more interested in the location of the tailors shops than the girlie bars( Yes there were some)
The strip as its now known only had developement on one side and there were many good sea food restaurants cooking todays catch on the beach side, you sat and ate on the wooden jetties where the boats unloaded.
Nostalgic? You bet. Change for the better? well that depends on a very personal point of view., but you can't go back in time, so I don't worry about it, as I said, time to move on if its not your taste.
Local perceptions changing, well thats a view over a long period of time and may not be so noticable for those of a shorter period here.
I don't think its a good idea to consider a mobile residence, firstly too hot, and the Thais don't understand the concept of living in a caravan as witnessed by my own wifes reaction to me telling her my daughter has just purchased a VW camper for 30,000ponds, yes 2 million baht, just for her holidays.Mutterings of , bababor bor etc!

A little different kind of incident last night at the City Lodge the neighbor told me about she and her husband were enjoying a game of pool, didn't notice they had that, oh well man about town that Iam

Anyway a farrang and his lady were sitting at a table, her purse on the table a young Thai guy, whom she decribed as being in a school unoform makes a mad dash in to grab the ladies purse, in the process trips over chairs and makes a hasty ( how the heck do you spell that )retreat empty handed.

Thats a new one to me

Maybe a few postings like this extract from a Bangkok Post article about Phu Phrabat Historical Park (perhaps in the "Nightlife" section!), would be useful in presenting a more appropriate image of Udon and not attracting the Pattaya louts. :P :)

Quote: Udon Thani is very a quiet town these days, a far cry from the bustling place it used to be during the Vietnam War when it served as a US air base. Today, most visitors prefer going to Nong Khai, a neighbouring province where they cross the Mekong River on their way to Laos. Unquote

I remeber Pattaya when it only had 2 hotels, one of which was the Nippon. My understanding is the hotel is under a new name. The only tourist you met there were GI's and some elderly people. There were only a couple of bars, the Drift Wood was one, it had a big drift wood in front which I'm sure is not ther now, and most likely under a new name. Their wasn't any bashing going there. You had to go up to Utipao and Rayong for that, lots of Air Force guys were getting jumped. Most of course where well in the souce and alot most of the time. I use to got to Pattaya back then, and had a great time just sitting on a desserted beach or a couple here her and there enjoying the sun.

hxjohn for me at least is talking in a code I dont understand however I did like the idea of a rouge falang of which he spoke. My mind goes into fond memories of Aunts with more make up than any tart on the corner and fox furs all trying to kiss me as a child . iF I had any imagination and vocabulary as a child Im sure I would have called them rouge falangs..........ah well .............

Isn't the word supposed to be rogue - not rouge (as in moulin rouge)

Dont we have a resident make - up expert on the forum anyway - someone who says he always buys make up at the duty free - for himself ????

It's almost working hxjohn, try a switch from English(Pidgen) to English(UK, or US), its in your language options in "Control Panel".

Ask a question in "Computer Problems" if you do not know how to do this

Please..........

If the term used is the same as the bird, then it's pigeon, but I'm not sure about the correct context of the word, hence the erratic spellings of it.

Maybe a few postings like this extract from a Bangkok Post article about Phu Phrabat Historical Park
Read those two articles yesterday and no one with a yearning for night life would go within a hundred km of Udon. All they spoke of was temples and a few big rocks. :)

Remember this reader post :?: :yikes:
I guess I must have joined this forum after the Stickman post, so I didn't remember it, but now after reading it, I'll probably never forget it. I'm surprised Stick published it (after all it is his website). Especially after his reply to the post, "oh dear" or something like that. I don't read his site very often, but it seems that in the past few years, he has kind of toned down his act. I first noticed the change after he married "a good Thai lady (not a bar lady)". I plan on e-mailing him about that post.
There are many forums out there. One that I know has quite a few threads on Udon Thani is: www.penhball.com/board. Maybe we all ought to go into these sites and post our own thoughts on Udon. Because right now in some of these forums and sites, Udon is being portrayed as the best thing to come along in the Thai-sex industry since go-go bars and thong bikinis. Before I moved to Udon I told people in Pattaya that it is a waste of time and money to go to Udon only for the girls (which some guys are doing). I told it truthfully for me anyway. I think Udon is a great place to live and a great place to visit, but neither reason is for the availability of women. Word of mouth is still the best advertisement, whether is be positive or negative. Someone posted earlier in this thread that they didn't think some of the lowlifes can use a computer/internet. Believe me, they can. I lived in Jomtien/Pattaya for six years. I saw some real neanderthals poking away at the keyboard in the internet shops.
Maybe we all need to become proactive in keeping Udon, Udon, the Udon that attracted most of us to this, what I describe to people as a "very live able city". When I tell people that, I am very succinct in my reasons.
