Hi Tony, the definition of Kee Nok has been the subject of a whole forum column with postings from many farangs and Thai which I mostly agree with so I don't think it needs further clarification from me.Prenders88 wrote:
Val, What was Pattaya like in the 70's?
How would you define a Farang Kee Nok that is now moving into Udon?
How has the locals perception of us in your eyes, changed for the worse?
I hope it won't change too much for the worse
Overwise we might have to trade our houses for RV's and move around Thailand fleeing the skirt chasers and kee noks

Pattaya in the late 70'? Well I can only speak of the things that I was personally aware of and which affected me. For a start the beach rd didn't have motorbikes for rent from end to end so you could always find a parking spot. The town itself hadn't spread out very far, so it was possible to get away from the touristy developement easier. The main type of tourists were elderly couples including those that come on the large liners that anchored off the bay. These type of people were more interested in the location of the tailors shops than the girlie bars( Yes there were some)
The strip as its now known only had developement on one side and there were many good sea food restaurants cooking todays catch on the beach side, you sat and ate on the wooden jetties where the boats unloaded.
Nostalgic? You bet. Change for the better? well that depends on a very personal point of view., but you can't go back in time, so I don't worry about it, as I said, time to move on if its not your taste.
Local perceptions changing, well thats a view over a long period of time and may not be so noticable for those of a shorter period here.
I don't think its a good idea to consider a mobile residence, firstly too hot, and the Thais don't understand the concept of living in a caravan as witnessed by my own wifes reaction to me telling her my daughter has just purchased a VW camper for 30,000ponds, yes 2 million baht, just for her holidays.Mutterings of , bababor bor etc!
