Udon Girls Orphanage
I assume your talking about the theatre in Udon? If so who is the contact.
I still need busses got any ideas?
We are far beyond $90.00 already.
The 65 tickets that we can purchase so far 9,750 Baht About $260.00
The other side of the coin is whatever number I get to this paid event I'm taking to the free Christmas event. So since this is a fund raiser for the VFW pretty hard to ask for a discount. It's used for the free Christmas event.

Udon Orphanage
To Ray's comment about the children having families:
The organization with which my family has been involved for many years was called a Children's Home rather than an orphanage for the very fact that most of the children were there due to circumstances that resulted in a parent not being able to care for them -- a mother's death and a father who was a merchant seaman, for example, or an alcoholic parent, or a chronically ill parent, or repeated abandonment by a parent.
In this type of setup, some of the children may live in the Home for almost all their childhood, while others come and go as the family circumstances change.

Sorry, I was referring to the mall in Nong Khai. They have a movie theater (2 screens). Tickets are 60 baht but the manager always gives us a 50% discount. Last year I took an entire school (65 students and 5 teachers) to see Herbie: Fully Loaded. That only cost $50, including snacks and a bus.
Typically if you ask around you can find someone who will donate their bus and driver, as long as you pay for gas. Use yours resources and ask around. There are a lot of Thai people who want to help or know someone who can help.
I really wish I could help you with this project but I'm heading back to the US in a few days (will return early July) but I will ask someone who owns a shop at the Jourensee mall to speak to the manager of the movie theater there. I doubt they will make orphans pay full price.
I haven't had time to read all the posts yet, so I apologize if this has been mentioned numerous times, ...but when were you planning to do this event? And you're hoping to take the entire 200+ orphans to the movies, right? If it's in July then Isara might be able to help sponsor the project.

Actually I thought the theatre was a good idea, maybe just maybe the theatre here will do the same. A lot of the kids here are not old enough to go to the moives, but I think the number would actually be somewhere around 180.
Thanks to some others help we are now have enough to purchase 85 tickets to the 4Th of July Picnic, I will take a many as I can whatever turns out to be.
Already working in the manner that you said about the bus, if someone gives us a break that would be wonderful. I have been talking with the local Thai's that I know I'm sure they have much better contacts then I.
I have approaqched this in the biginning as what I could do as one person and others came forward to help. That really makes me feel good about the people that are in this old world.
I would appreciate any ideas that you might have. I don't have a ton of money but I do have time .

You know today was one big surprise Tool Pro has sponsored the busses for the event at no charge to us, this isn't a small jesture three huge busses, for the day. I also believe they are going help with a english speaking representative to help us., with the kids.
So 85 tickets down and 100 or so to go
But remember that this is twice as many as I thought would be able to go already
I was just going to show up at the picnic originally but the numbers have grown enough now that I thought it best to inform the VFW so they wouldn't get caught short on the day of the picnic. Since this is a group that as a norm wouldn't be in the mix.
I'll just keep poking along and do as much as can be done.
I plan on speaking to the local Theatre manager some time next month and see waht can be done wiht that. Ya I think that group would fill one of his theatres, so we will see.

Boy talk about a big surprise today Tool Pro chose to sponsor the transportation for the the event and has generuosly donated three huge busses to pick the children up an bring them back to the home.
Three busees for the entire day, that is no little thing.
It's up to 85 tickets just a 100 or more or so to go
Would be nice to fill those busses
Originally I was just going to show up but the numbers are already twice what I envisioned so I sent the VFW a letter to today letting them know what the plan was. I didn't want them to be short on the day of the picnic. Since I intend to purchase the tickets in about two weeks.
Next month I will speak to the theater manager and see what I can work out with him, so maybe we can get another outing done sometime in the future.
Guys do me a favor the owner of Tool Pro jumped all over this to help, so when your in there could you add to my thank you.

Just an idea Ray.Have you considered hiring one of those huge screen travelling movie shows. The show could be put on in the home grounds, everyone could go, minumum disruption to the kids and staff and yourself. The money saved could go towards treats for the kids. I understand you can choose the sort of movie in advance, so cartoons, mor lam. all would make the kids happy , I am sure
I have sent Pm to you on this subject. Val
I have sent Pm to you on this subject. Val
You know guys I'm getting Pm's on this but one really touched me when I read it and I wanted to share I won't say who wrote it in respect for thier privacy:
Yesterday two ladies from the welfare dept wanted to pay a visit to the kids and take a lot of fruit to make merit. It was one of their birthday and rather give to the monks at the local temple, realising with the Kings anniversary they would have plenty, they decided to give some joy to the kids. They asked me to accompany them. I jumped at the chance naturally.Well I fully understand your enthusiasm now, what a marvellous bunch they are and well brought up by the staff, sawadees and courtesy everywhere.
The day started off at the wholesale fruit market where we purchased maybe a ton of oranges and rambutans(Gnoch), put them in the pick up and off we went. On arrival we all signed in, yes, even the welfare staff had to. After formalities were completed we proceeded to the living quarters. The kids came out rather shyly at first, apart from the odd couple who were obviously extroverts and greeted us like we were long lost family. We then went to the dining area where all the girls formed two rather long queues to receive their share. It was amazing, short ones, tall ones all mixed in.Fortunately I had taken a camera , because there were human interest photos everywhere.Looking at them now it is of interest to see the expressions of shyness and curiosity at the start, giving way to sheer joy and pleasure in the later ones. It is called Girls Home not orphanage as firstly not all are orphans, surprisingly few actually and secondly the management feel that the word orphanage carries a stigma which may affect their later life.I fully agree with this and in any case its the girls Home!! they know no other.
I got a chance to talk to some of the elder girls and I asked what they would most like if I came again. Surprisingly, new (used) clothes were high on the list, T shirts , shorts etc. Even knickers, but the ladies told me these would have to be new owing to a reluctance to wear used underware.
After that it was the usual kiddies things, sweets, although the fruit was readily accepted and would be more healthy for them, toys of the sporting variety not teddy bears etc, so skipping ropes, balls, table tennis etc.
I hope you don't feel I am interfereing in your project, just the contary I want to be of assistance if I may and help you and the kids.
Well 85 tickets down 100 to go
![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

Spoke with the owner of the Mall here in Nong Khai and he knows the owner of Major Cineplex in Thailand. He said they're fairly stingy but he'll ask about a discount anyway. Is there another theater in Udon? The other one closed, right?
That aside, I think Val has the best idea. Last night there was a festival and they had 3 of those mobile theater trucks. They were great. I think that's a great idea. They can even setup at the Girl's Home. You can create a whole festival type atmosphere with games and movies. Granted, it would be nice to get them away from their home for a while. So maybe at a nearby park or someplace.
Gotta go back to the states for a few weeks. Will be back next month. Will try and check in and follow the progress of this project. Good luck!

Well we can try, but to be honest I like Val idea best, no transportation involved, Tool Pro really saved our bacon on that one.
We may make some roads on he additonal tickets we need I took your advice and began speaking the large Thia businesses here in town that I shop with and asked for some help in buying tickets we will see what happens. One way or another we will get them there.
What are the costs involved for the mobile theaters?

Ray, cost of mobile cinema. The show basically is about 5-6000bht which normally includes one movie , fairly modern but not recent release. You can view the catalogue of available titles which all have varying prices and order accordingly. for example, the latest Harry Potter is about 3,500 bht. Yes its not even in the big cinemas yet, but you can see it on their screen. you can order as many or few as you want, will go on till daybreak if you need. The companys office is in Udon so you can look for yourself and price it up
Hopefully wil be seeing you tomorrow at the bowling so my wife can give all the details to your, or even take you to the office if you want.
I would suggest the show is held in the grounds of the home to avoid any security problems involving the kids as when the outside natives see the big screen going up all the vendors from miles around turn up with their carts and so do all the locals.. Val

The mobile movie theater idea sounds terrific. Should those of you physically in Udon want to do this, I'll be glad to donate.
Kally's idea about painting gave me another idea...
Is there a playroom, dining room or even hallway with a large, uninterrupted wall area -- even an outdoor wall? Stephen is an artist, and (knowing the dimensions of the wall) he can design a mural and grid it out for painting. Next time we're in Udon (hoping for December), it would take only a few days to grid the wall, transfer the design, then fill it in with bright paints.
Also, Stephen is a state officer with the Optimist Club, whose entire mission is focused on children. Optimist Club donate the materials cost for paint, brushes, cleaning supplies, dropcloths, etc.
