I feel safe, as long as the people reported do not see this, and think they can go to Udon for the easy pickings amongst those that are not quite used to, or expect this activity. And, perhaps, travel for the very minor red light area, which is a feature of any town of any significance around the world.

Especially Herbert Hopfinger  and those with interest (in that sense) in Goldfish

I am not an expert on much of anything, especially Udon! But,I have lived in Thailand for 6 continous years and have been here for 12 years.4 yrs. continous in Bangkok and 2 in Nong Khai.I watched the criminal aggressiveness in Bangkok progress dramatically after ''the war on drugs'',saw 4 purse snatchings and 2 neck gold snatchings, saw the aggressive manner of the soi taxi guys increase in negative attitude towards us and continous attempts to cheat us and verbally abuse us.Watched the change of attitude of the ''metered taxi drivers''in refusing to turn on meters, etc. etc.I went from a feeling of relative safety to pro active thinking about safety, such as what hours I was out and about to making sure I was in a group of ''friends'' at questional venues.Since I am not a night owl, everything I am talking about happened during the daytime.I think we have to be prudent in our actions, remembering that not only the ''criminal element''is feeling the pinch, many ordinary Thais are feeling it to with inflation and that brings out resentment towards us perceived ''rich''falangs combined with the obvious disrepect shown by many falangs.I have not personally seen any ''bashings'' with the exception of a couple of bar fights a long time ago and I remember thinking ,at the time,The young Thais were really enjoying the opportunity to kick the ---- out of a mouthy falang and wondering why they were so angry.

It's a case of the "haves" and the "have nots" and lots of alcohol. Not a good combination.

Made a song, to calm things down!

Post by Loaded » February 19, 2006, 6:30 am

"Come on baby give me your hand
Check out the high spots, the lay of the land
Need a little lovin' in a big limousine (?)
Oooh, come on over baby and I'll make you obscene

I feel safe in Udon City
I feel safe in Udon City
I feel safe in Udon City
I feel safe in Udon City

All over the city and all of the dives
Don't mess with this place, it'll eat you alive
Got a lip smackin' honey to suck off the jam
I'm on top of the world ma, ready to slam

I feel safe in Udon City
I feel safe in Udon City
I feel safe in Udon City
I feel safe in Udon City
I feel safe in Udon City
I feel safe in Udon City
I feel safe in Udon City
I feel safe in Udon City

[Runnin' Movin'] all over like a jumpin' bean
Take a look at that thing in the tight assed jeans
Comin' your way, now, you might be in luck
Don't you fret boy, she's ready to buck

I feel safe in Udon City
I feel safe in Udon City
I feel safe in Udon City
I feel safe in Udon City

I feel safe in Udon City
I feel safe in Udon City
I feel safe in Udon City
I feel safe in Udon City
I feel safe in Udon City
I feel safe in Udon City
I feel safe in Udon City

Ready to make it ??

Udon City
Udon City
Udon City

I feel safe in a cage in Udon City"

The following is not meant to alarm people in any way but is posted to make people more aware especially after a night out. This is becoming a very real threat now.
I spoke with an english guy today with a rather conspicuous dressing on his head - he explained that Thursday last week he was riding his motorcycle home around 3am on the Khon Kaen Road (goes past Little Rock etc) when from behind, two youths on another motorcycle whacked him on the head with either a metal or wooden bar.
Fortunately, the victim remained upright and the attackers fled empty handed but he had a nasty wound of course.
Secondly ,
A THAI woman was attacked yesterday on her motorcycle: again this was in the early hours, on her way home from work very far outside of the town centre. This time the attackers were successful in getting her money and other personal posessions and causing her injury in the process.

Way too many incidents of late and puts out the warning to be on your guard following an evening out.

Due to lack of sponsors, no video yet!

No, it was more of a way to tell that I feel safe in Udon, even though weird ---- happens around town and surrounding areas. I live in down town Udon, 5 min walk to Robinson, and normally on my bike or walking when going out night time. Also, I have the ability to end up in weird and dark places in the early hours, but worst thing happen so far, is a couple of rude comment. Maybe lucky?

However, time maybe change :( , and its time to take a few beforehand safety advices. I

So apart from trying to avoid getting into a sticky situation in the first place, what do you guys recommend as a way of defending yourself from a possible attack?

Hmm, not fit enough for that though, BM's solution of a crash helmet seems much more easy to follow

Fair comment BB... :)
Always wear a crash helmet if you are on a motorcy (may look a bit silly walking home in one though)...

Failing that, if you have a friend in the US, get them to send you one of these... (I'm not sure if they are legal in Thailand though).. :?:

I've seen the stun-gun sold in Pattaya, disquised as many different items.
I've kept some pepper sparay around for years (never had to use it), I resupply when I go back to the states, I've heard they go bad after a few years (?). Pepper spray can also be good against aggressive dogs.
Not sure if it is legal here, would like to know.

You can buy a stun gun at the night market, but any kind of equipment such as that needs to be taken care of something most of us can not do.

Very hard to defend yourself from what you don't see coming, which most these incidents described seem to be.

If you do see it coming get away from the guys head for crowds of people.

If you have no other choice try to kick the guy in the knee cap a hard as can and then run. Trust me if there is a group after you you are going to lose.

Maqybe a throw away wad of small bill can buy you time, if you have no other choice, throw it up in the air and then run.

Notice anythign consistent run came up a lot didn't it. Why unless you have somethign to prove or your proficient in martial arts and in great physical condition the very best thing to do is get away from the problem.

Most of these things are happening around bar closing time. Why because your an easy target then. So wiht that thought in mind why not change your pattern if you have an urge to gte blind drunk before you get there, take the sweety that you " conqured" for the night. I love guy's who talk about chasing girls here  Maybe the seduction is the amount paid :?

Anyway take her back to your room and get as drunk as you want. Or head out with the mates and finish it off but not at the strip.

Remember to male these plans before you get to the point that you have to have a friend read your drivers license to you so you can remember your name

Guys even I enjoy rasing hell once in awhile you don't have to do that where the potential of becoming a victim is so much higher. There are plenty of places to drink in Udon that are not farrangs bars where guys like this will be looking for you.

My first year here I went out every night and not once did I even see a fight sometimes a argument, which was my clue to find greener pastures. But I never went to farrang places excpet to get a bite to eat before going out. Most of us are not tourist here and we don't have to be a part of it.

But that was three years ago. Has anyone noticed that when you are a tourist that you might conduct yourself differently then you noramally do?

Or that tourist tend to try to cram a whole year of fun into a few weeks? Thier is only one reasin for a Thai to put up with rude behaivor, money. Now the ladies usually have a more gentle way of getting it. The guy on the other hand may have much more forceful way of doing things.
