Farang Population in and around Udon
Farang Population in and around Udon
I have not been able to find any reference to X- pat / Farang population numbers for the Udon area. Other areas seem to advertise their numbers with great gusto. Can anyone help with this query??? Are there any official or guestimate numbers out there to be had?
I thank you in anticipation Boof

Re: Farang Population in and around Udon
From what I have been told was there are approximately 2400 expats in Udon Thani, but that is only those who are on long term visas (i.e. student, teacher, support of spouse, retirement). The total doesn't take in about for tourist visas and expats doing visa runs, or those who have over stayed. That figure is up about 1000 expats from when I first got here in Jan 2005.

Ah more uptodate than me, thanks, my info was from the Office of the medical office for udon Thani province who is looking at the Blood requirements, for the province in line with my Blood donor post.
I do agree that there are definitely more than 2004/5, considerably more, but I feel numbers will start to decline especially short term as costs of travel and the insecurity in the financial markets begin to hit.
I mean if you are older in the UK everything is costing a lot more and pensions are not going up fast enough..

Re: Farang Population in and around Udon
I also remember the local Government came out 3-4 years ago stating there were 2000 expats in Udon. Unclear was what did they mean by Udon. The city proper all the whole province or what. Also there are many expats like myself that work outside the country. I come in on a Visa Upon Arrival then go to Loas and get a non O for 3 months then back to sea for 4 months. Same with the guys in the oil fields, 1 or 2 months home then back on the rigs for 1 or 2 months. Are we counted as part of the expat community? Actually I don't think anyone has an idea how many expats reside in Udon other then those on a permenent visa.
No man has a good enough memory to be a succesful liar.
Re: Farang Population in and around Udon
Front page of http://www.udcenter.com states 30,000. Is this a misprint?
Udon Thani has been chosen to be urban for present and the future of the region. The city has been well-designed/prepared to accommodate the goverment's plan to become the hub of the regional commerce, agriculture, education, industry and tourism. The development and expansion of the city yields the average of 15% increase in income per capita year-to-date. This could also be partly suggested by the earnings gotten from the 30,000 foreigners permanently residing in Udon Thani. In addition, the number of frequent visitors from Laos alone is over 160,000 per month triggering a much higher revenue generated by this group to the city. The recent statistics show the consistent growth during the past months, therefore, it signals the continuous escalation for the years to come.

Re: Farang Population in and around Udon
Is that Udon Thani Province or A. Muang Udon Thani??? They do keep a count of Loas entering and leaving Thailand, Laos with family in Thailand entering and leaving Thailand and they keep count of farangs entering and leaving Thailand in Nong Khai. I had posted a picture of the board that had the numbers on it, here on the forum, just don't remember where.
I don't think it's a lie, just little off on the numbers if it's for A. Muang Udon Thani, if for all the province then I would agree with it. There are a lot farangs living in villages in the province and rarely do you see them, as they tend keep to themselves.
Thank you motasi for pointing that out.

Don't forget that Udcentre is a new complex looking for companies to occupy it. It is likely that their figures will be a the highest end - more customers for their customers
In the many times this has been discussed on this board the only conclusion I have come to is that no one actually has any idea how many Falang actually live in & around Udon. But it is probably more than the last time the question was asked...

Re: Farang Population in and around Udon
8000 farlangs living in Udon, including those on non o's and doing visa runs, would'nt be a bad guess.
A Total of 30,000 foriegners living in Udon, including chinese, would'nt be a bad guess either.

Re: Farang Population in and around Udon
Sorry to have asked a perenial question..... my only excuse is that I havent been as exposed to the in depth info long enough to have realised that the info is probably available in some archive somewhere in the site. Anyways I would like to thank you all for the available info even though it all seems somewhat qualified It is a place to start ones expectations....... When I visited Issan I must admit that Lotus, Robinson, Centro andTesco et al seemed to argue a fair percentage of Farangs as did the number of Farangs strolling down various village roads, right down to the one dog town!! Although unnumbered the species is definitely not on the endangered list as far as I can see.spaul wrote:8000 farlangs living in Udon, including those on non o's and doing visa runs, would'nt be a bad guess.

Re: Farang Population in and around Udon
I do feel actually the only people that would have any idea would be Immigration, however geting them to state at a particular time how many farangs ( westerners ) are living in udon would be a tad difficult as many renew in BKK.
Ther are no particular archives I am aware of that would give that info.
But the increase in farang ( western) foods and tecnology is coming to udon as opposed to 5 years ago when it was hard to find some things, so we are moving in the right direction any way and does it realy matter how many we are, quality rather than quantity is always best anyway.

Re: Farang Population in and around Udon
Recently, on another site, I saw something that stated the foreign population of Udon Thani Province was 30,000. That includes all foreigners. I know that the Lao population is considerable (many farm workers) and years ago the Isan region was home to thousands of Vietnamese. Many proudly displayed photos of Uncle Ho in their homes. They made the Thai government rather nervous.
Re: Farang Population in and around Udon
