I want to study Thai

Post by BigRick808 » October 13, 2013, 8:34 pm

Hello,

I hope one of you gentlemen can help me solve a minor problem: I have sent an e-mail to Rajabhat University asking about the details of various programs teaching Thai to foreigners about three weeks ago and then about a week ago but I haven't gotten a reply. If one of you have a few moments I would sincerely appreciate it if you could call them and ask about the programs and pass the info on to me.
I understand the programs can be very intensive--that's what I want. I'm looking for a program from a government university in Udon Thani so I will be able to receive credit for it in the future without difficulty. I have already investigated the topic. Thanks for any replies.

Any info on an inexpensive guest house hear the shopping complex that has Robinsons(if it's still there) in it will also be appreciated. I stayed at Fuzzy Ken's a few years back for a couple of days but his website appears to only be for a restaurant nowadays. Anyone know if Ken is still around? He's such a helpful, pleasant fellow. Would like to stay there again if he's still got a few rooms.

Been there, done that. That's where I started before the e-mails. Whoever answered didn't speak English and hung up several times. If anyone can speak Thai and is willing to make a call I would appreciate it. Thanks.

P.S. I saw the dates but I know that things do sometimes change...even in Thailand. Maybe they will even answer in English. I'm not at home or in Thailand and things that are ordinarily simple when you're at home aren't so simple when on the road in a foreign land.

No need to answer. I think I found a place on this website. It looks 10X better than Fuzzy's. He was very nice and a pleasure to talk to, but his place was...well, let's just say it truly was a little fuzzy.

Lost in translation.
About an hour ago I saw an old man stood by the local lake looking a bit lost.
He explained (in Thai) he had lost his keys in the water. He then explained he was going home to get a mask (that's what his hand actions meant to me).
As he walked off i dived in. After 30 seconds I found a pair of glasses and carried on looking for the keys. he returned 20 minutes later very gratefully picked up the glasses I found, looked at me very strangely wondering why i was still in the muddy water and walked off.

Must improve my language skills.

BR8: If you decide to take the course, I'm sure there'd be a fair number of people on the forum would be interested in how things go, if you'd care to share your experience. Thansk

I want to study Thai

Post by Philrjones » October 15, 2013, 8:55 am

Hi - I'm working my way through an online resource which I'm finding excellent in learning Thai.

Here is the link:

http://www.learningthai.com/books/manee ... ion_01.htm

You can jump between lessons from a menu on the left. Has flashcards, exercises etc. I even managed to read a message from the TW in Thai that she sent me this morning!

Cheers
Phil

Pj, manee was what did the trick for me. Reading Thai after 1 lesson.....okay, okay, a couple consonants and a vowel or two.....but reading nonetheless.
Manee is also available in mp3, pdfs, and quizzes at http://www.seasite.niu.edu/Thai/language/reading.htm

I admire you guys who are learning to read and write Thai, it's way beyond the capacity of my tiny brain.

I'm learning to speak it through http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJNrs4z_Pn0 on YouTube where there are 30 or more excellent lessons that somebody paid for and then made them public.
