Overweight, low-IQ kids 'a wake-up call for society'

With research indicating more Thai children will be overweight, shorter and have a lower IQ in the next decade, academics are urging society to prevent kids from growing up with low potential.

Citing the increasing problem of malnutrition in Thai children as alarming, the South East Asia Nutrition Survey (SEANUTS) research - supported by Foremost milk manufacturer FrieslandCampina - revealed that the main reason for this was a lack of exercise and insufficient nutrients. Hence, children should exercise regularly, eat healthy and drink milk daily.

The research - conducted in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam - has been in progress for three years. Phase two started in 2013 and is due to finish next year.

The Thailand survey in 2011 and 2012 involved 3,119 samplings aged 0.5-12.9 and was supervised by Mahidol University's (MU) Institute of Nutrition.

It was found that obese children aged three to six might also be overweight between the ages of six to 12.

Anaemia occurs twice as much in rural children than urban children while 30-40 per cent of the sampling had vitamin D deficiency.

Malnutrition came from receiving insufficient nutrients necessary for growth such as vitamin A, vitamin D, iron, iodine and calcium since the infant stage.

If the issue remains unchecked, it will lead to unhealthy characteristics in the population over the next decade that will become a national problem.

It is the government sector's responsibility to focus on the problem as well as implementing preventive measures to solve the problem, the study said.

Nutritionist and SEANUTS's principal investigator, Dr Nipa Rojroongwasinkul, said the issue of insufficient nutrition needed to be resolved through collaboration between family and state policy. Many parents lacked knowledge about nutrition.

Women require sufficient iron and iodine during their pregnancy, she said, adding failure to do so could affect a child's IQ.

Latest research showed that the average IQ for Thai children was 90-92, when it should be over 100 according to normal standards, she added.

MU Nutrition Physiology head Dr Kallaya Kijboonchoo said besides eating five food groups and getting enough sleep, Children aged six to 12 should play sports daily that required running and jumping such as basketball, which would improve bone flexibility and lead to a person being taller.

She urged parents to have them drink milk daily and since calcium could be absorbed better with the help of vitamin D, kids should play outdoors.

As the survey found both urban and rural children had vitamin D, vitamin A, iron and calcium deficiencies, she said families should urge kids to exercise and play sport.

"Don't let them stay in the house glued to electronic screens. These bad habits will lead to eating out of proportion, not eating on time and eating low-quality food," she added.

The Department of Health's Bureau of Nutrition specialist Sa-nga Damapong said the government sector was concerned about childhood obesity.

He said the Thai National Health Examination survey showed that 5.8 per cent of the population between the ages of two and five was obese in 1997 compared to 7.9 per cent in 2001, while obesity in children aged six to 12 had risen from 5.8 per cent to 6.7 per cent in 2010. Both age groups have increased rates of obesity of 8.5 per cent and 8.7 per cent respectively.

Sa-nga said the government sector had projects to prevent child malnutrition such as the Public Health Ministry's project to reduce the consumption of sugary, fatty and salty food.

This project, initiated in 2013, aims to end bad eating habits and add more servings of vegetables and fruits, while also raising parents' and children's awareness of unhealthy diet dangers, he said.

Furthermore, he said the ministry also promoted the intake of more iron and iodine for pregnant women to promote IQ and brain development in children.

Wow .... whoever would have thought that an Academic group (could almost be Boston Uni or Nottingham Uni couldn't it) who are funded by " Foremost milk manufacturer FrieslandCampina" would conclude that everyone needs to drink more milk.

Ah that would be the Harvard studies (probably done by Earnest in between doing his referencing and filing) which were no doubt paid for by the Running jogging and bike machine company of LA ..... not that I'm saying it had any influence on the results, or that the Thai results paid for by a milk manufacturer were in any way influenced towards drinking milk =;

If one looked at the article with a modicum of being serious, then the results formulated by anyone would leave you thinking that in fact it is true and the Thai Nation as a whole have been in my book over the last few years getting fatter.
As to the average intelligence, that one cannot in all honesty comment on unless one was to conduct a full IQ evaluation over a reasonable period of time involving Thais from across the country.

The fatties are coming about because of the sedentary lifestyle many Thais now lead considering their diet has not changed but their lifestyle has. No more walking distances, now they ride or drive. No more listening to the radio now they sit and watch TV or children use the latest lazy man's toy the I-pad not just for a few minutes but hours.

Their diet was initially based on manual labour and a resonable energetic lifestyle, nowadays that is no longer the norm, but the fatty diet everything fried etc:- is no longer needed but they still eat the same fried food they did a couple of decades ago.

As for their intelligence well considering the vast amount of education is still carried on using 19th century practices in a 21st century world it is hardly surprising. coupled with their attitude to work in general I am not entirely surprised.

Is there a correlation between food and iq?

All the time they have guns, knives, motor bikes and public transport, very few will get old enough to die of heart failure due to obesity :-k

I live, eat and work everyday with almost 50 thai's in a single house and there are no fatties amongst us ( well maybe me a little bit :D ). There is a good cross section from many Thailand provinces. Many shapes and sizes. All have a good IQ, albeit sometimes not able to think outside the box, but generally smart and very good energetic motivated men. They are all industrial electrical workers, technicians, supervisors, engineers so being smart with experience is a small pre requisite, being slim is not. So maybe they are smarter because they are slimmer.

Now on the other hand, if you were to do a survey of the motor bike food cart vendors? Not hard to see a non slim person there. Probably not enough milk.

The 7% with an IQ below 70 is what skews the overall result below 100. Why, i can only speculate, but there do seem to be many mentally disabled children - and i think Iodine etc, has little to do with it, as many are in the towns where deficiency is not likely to be an issue - premature birth possibly?

Folks, let's try to make sure that this thread doesn't head off to anti-Thai bias and even worse. We're all here because we choose to be here. And we're guests here, as well. Thanks!!

The original article was written by Thai academics about Thais, I was only adding my thoughts and experieences. I ti snot anti Thai but outlining some pertinent facts as well as possible reasons.
The law as stated is clear but with so many villages doing their own thing with the a nod and a wink, then anything can and often does happen.
I am not saying that it is the reason just a small part of the problem. With the ever-changing world and access to many things we as foreigners took for granted when we were growing up then it is hardly surprising that many seek to enhance their lifestyles with easily ( now ) available benefits. This in turn makes them more sedentary and reliant of the wonders of computerisation. Without understanding the ramifications of modern lifestyles, like less exercise, less thinking as so much is done for you, less need to plan , in fact less of everything they used to do , so coupled with the ' jai yen yen ' attitude ( not a bad thing itself ) can lead to the probelm mentioned in the original article.

My experience has been the complete reverse. The Thais seem more skillful at learning foreign languages than English speakers. Very few farang speak even reasonable Thai. Quite a few Thai know some English.

The Thais seem to self manage their weight much better than farang. There are a lot of big farang in Thailand. May be boredom is one reason why too many farang do not take care of their health in Thailand. Some might say it's stupidity or low intelligence. Stupidity or low intelligence might also explain why more than a few farang are happy to walk in public holding hands with a sex worker. I do wonder about some of the things us farang do. I don't look at the Thais as being particularly stupid.

I used to tell Thais that in farangland men didn't walk around in public with sex workers or try to marry them. Oh Buddha, what might they think of us?
