Lack of loyalty & morals

Post by chickaboom » December 10, 2014, 7:37 am

I go to see Rose the masseuse every month & I've been going there for about 2 years. On my last visit she told me a sorry tale. She took in and trained a lady she met (an ex teacher who'd fallen upon hard times) who was destitute. She bought her clothes and fed her and, when she was competent enough, gave her a job. The lady lived in Rose's shop rent free, all found including food, for 6 months during which time she saved about 60,000 baht.

The woman only worked on Thai clients because she didn't speak English and Rose had only taught her Thai massage & not the remedial stuff. One day last month the woman disappeared and two days later opened a massage shop just around the corner. She'd been talking to Rose's Thai clients and running Rose down saying she charged her exorbitant rent and electricity charges etc when she was living in Rose's shop.

Fortunately for Rose her clients are 80% farangs so the loss of some of the Thai clients didn't affect her too much and they are gradually returning.
The previous worker Rose had, who took care of the Thai clients, left and went to Pattaya. She also lived in the shop and Rose didn't know until after she left that the lady had been selling s..x in the evenings after Rose had gone home.
I asked if she was going to get another co-worker. She said maybe she'd just concentrate on farang customers in future "how can I trust Thai woman in future".

What did Rose expect honesty, really it never seems to amaze me, they denigrate farangs in a heartbeat but Thais bless 'em, never think another Thai is bad or will do harmful things. In business you always makle sure your business is protected by ensuring you get your co-workers or apprentices ( like this lady was ) sign a legal document banning them from opening up within a certain radius fo your business.
can be done i have seen it.

Paul, your statement makes no sense at all. Every business should have every worker sign a legal document banning them from opening a business in a certain radius from their business? Does this include farang businesses in Day & Night and Nutty Park, all the shops in Central Plaza, all the shops at the night market? Best pass this on to Jon at the Tap. Please explain your logic or lack of it.

in the article's case, the owner provided room and board along with training and experience to the woman in question.. Having the employee sign a non-competition agreement while most likely legal just doesn't seem like something a Thai in a small business would even think about doing.... Small potatoes....

Perhaps they were also only indirect competitors. One was principally selling boom boom and the other wasn't.

There are two Thai massage shops within 100 metres of my office in New Zealand. Same scenario. They chase different customers and don't see themselves as being competitors. I see a fair few sleazy guys entering the one closest to my office. I'm strictly prohibited by my Mrs. from having a massage at that shop.

I think everyone has the right to start there own business, it's how you go about it that matters, the lady should have been more honest and told her she was thinking about opening up before the event, that's in a perfect world how ever, as far as selling a business and then reopening a short time later nearby that sucks and the business should be black banned, I think it has just been done in Ban Dung.

Rose wasn't angry or even complaining but I'd have been furious if someone I'd helped did that to me. I just asked where the other woman was and Rose said she now had her own shop around the corner. She was just kind of philosophical about human nature rather than mad at the woman. As for getting something from the other lady in writing about not opening a shop nearby, Rose isn't a business woman, just a nice person who's good at what she does and is too trusting it seems

I can confirm that has happened, although the "black banning", which is more like self-banning, is far from universal.

I agree a written undertaking for this scenario would not have been contemplated by Rose, what I was highlighting is the need to ensure staff you tyrain do not then stab you in the back by opening up near you AND taking your customers, especially in the SERVICE industry as there are only so many customers, the only thing the other lady had was a bigger menu as it were, but then bigger menu is not always the answer as Rose is getting some of her customers back.

Thai ladies do not trust each other when it comes to men so why trust them when it comes to customers and work etc. beggars belief.

I realized years ago that thais rip each other off daily, farangs seem to think its only us that get stuffed, although well known now day's that farangs will stuff other farangs over too ., its a cut throat world out there and anybody that buys a business butter make sure they have an agreement signed , although even agreements can be broken easy. good example of an easy way out is if I sold papa's and then opened up down the road , if the poo kicked off I could just say "its not my place, its the wives" . of course that is something I could never do as my morals would never allow me to stoop so low, each to their own though. hope rose gets her customers back soon.

Of course the Thai logic would suggest that if three or four others also opened in the same soi it would bring lots of new customers to the "massage area" :-k

Thailand is replete with businesses that steal ideas just look at how many coffee shops, women's dress stores or eyeglass stores there are in Udon. Every Thai is chasing the next get rich scheme or business with no sense what it takes to run a business. It is laughable the rent that is being paid for what amounts to a space the size of a large closet. As GT points out
selling boom boom
this is what they must be doing in order to make money.

No one owns the exculsive rights to any type of business. Not only Thai's but many farangs have copied others ideas more then once here.

Concur Malc
Rose is the best I've found and she fixed my back when nobody else could. Brilliant in her field but a sucker for a hard luck story. She lends money to all and sundry and never gets paid back. Doesn't seem to worry her though. Yes, I'm sure her customers will come back.
