Indonesia finds missing submarine parts

Search teams have recovered debris believed to be from an Indonesian submarine missing for days in the Bali Sea, defence officials said on Saturday, as hopes dwindled for the 53 crew who were expected to have run out of oxygen in the early hours. - REUTERS

One wonders why any South East nation needs submarines, Thailand included. Indonesia condemning sailors in a 32 year old low spec sub seems daft.

The Trafalgar (were getting threre ) 600 m

So none of the subs tested to the depth of 700 m

DD, News items claim remains found by sonar at 850m. As for your other figures these are normally closely kept National secrets so how you got you hands on them is a mystery. One of the main tasks of the Astute Class subs is anti hunter killer submarine protection to our nuclear deterrent subs, so not much sense in them only being able to dive to half the depth.

This sub although having a major refit in 2012 was 41 years old. I think l read the keil was laid in 1978.
RIP to all the 53 crew members and condolences to their families.

Huge difference between test depths and actual operational limits which could be much more but would actually be a closely guarded secret. We can find out in 30 to 50 years when it becomes unclassified information

So you are ruling out a torpedo explosion onboard might have been the cause? Not an expert but would expect that would test any limitations

yep. an explosion of that magnitude at that relatively shallow depth in an area where there were many ships would have shown up on detectors on the other ships. Sonar has been around for a very long time.

Ah, ok. No explosion then. Old submarine maybe had issues that led to unrecoverable dive. Or, some other structural failure and it sank. I believe the Indo Navy already used that term.

Indonesian military officials have confirmed they have found a missing submarine, which lies deep in the Bali Sea and has broken into three parts.

Navy chief of staff Yudo Margono told reporters the ship's hull, stern and main body were separated, with the latter found cracked, and added the crew were not to blame for the accident.
