Stroke -Doctor recommendations

Post by Jai2 » January 12, 2024, 6:34 pm

I have a Friend arriving from Pattaya this week--- he had a stroke about 8 months ago, he is not very happy with the treatment he has been getting there, and even more unhappy with their pricing . He just wants to see a Doctor, show him his reports, & what they are telling him to take and get his opinion. I don't know where to direct him to.

So be grateful for any Recommendations ---Thanks Guys

Could start with the public hospital at Nong Prajak - at least they will not cost an arm and a leg. Start with the international office at the top of the escalator at the main entrance.

Call Nurse Noonid at 0945156404. She is in charge of the International Office at Udon Thani Hospital which is the big government hospital across from Nong Prajak Public Park. She speaks good English and can advise you on what to do to see a specialist for stroke.

I had a stroke fifteen years ago spent a week in Wattana and a couple of weeks in the government hospital. I couldn't read write or walk and could barely talk. I was not getting any better so we decided that I might as well lie in bed at home for free. Went to see a specialist in Khon Khaen didn't help. Basically part of your brain is dead or shut down . If it's dead its dead but if it's shut down it may come back. I was lucky mine took a few months but came back about 95% which is not bad.Blood thinners and chloresterol medication to prevent a recurrence is all they can do the rest is up to you. It was cheap because I did not receive any treatment just room and board. However I did spend a few hundred on an MRI. Good luck to your friend.

I dont know when the last time you guys went to the main public hospital -- its not cheep anymore since a certain-person was put in charge of it. Farangs are now separated from Thais when entering.

Anyway thanks for your help.........

I am not sure that there is much they can do after you had your stroke but see that you get the right bloodthinning meds, like Eliquis and rehab training if needed.

What does that mean exactly Jai2? How are farangs separated upon entry? I was last there on Dec 6th, and no one separated me. I always check-in at the International Office for Foreigners and am given queue priority when I have an appointment with a doctor. Medicine costs are the same for everyone, but certain medical procedures are more expensive for foreigners.

And who is this new person in charge that would be responsible for increasing costs for foreigners?

As Semperfiguy said, no separation, and the international office gets you a queue number and you do seem to have priority (because you pay cash). But not expensive for routine tests and consultations, a typical bill for a couple of tests, consultation and maybe some meds is usually under 2,000 baht - sometimes a lot less. Next visit next week....

The difference between Thailand and the U.S. I have to have a head MRI once/year. I do it in Boston at the hospital where my neurosurgeon is. It's $4,500 each time. Fortunately between Medicare and my Medicare supplement plan, it costs me nothing.

Been using Eliquis and Entreso 51/49 for 3 years now = very expensive in Thailand, if you can get em.

I have system in place where I can have phone consultation with my cardiologist in AUS, he renews my prescription for 6 months (artical 24) and my sister sends em upto me. > AUD $400 (big Medicare subisidy). Actually lasts me 12 months as I'm on half dose.

All I can say is,
Make up your own minds. '
Thai' trained doctors are not allowed to practice any form of medical care in Western countries. The level of training is deemed inadequate to western standards.
The big giveaway, speaking good English and the ability to use experience to diagnose the problem.
Lost a leg because of inability of junior doctors to diagnose what the infection was until boss (consultant) came on his once-a-week visit.
