Right here now.......erm what next?

Post by barrybowfinger » November 17, 2007, 2:22 am

After some months of preparation, consternation and monastic saving, I have finally landed my fat arse in Udon. The question is now...what to do with myself? There are options, including family business and some low rent teaching diversions, or....just getting pissed with Roy :D which to be honest is the most likely outcome. In any case, just wanted to ask the masses what does a 30 year old (i know.....greenhorn) do to amuse himself in this neck of the woods?
PS hope to meet some of your goodselves in the near future

I would like to inform all forum members that I have never met this man, I have no connection with this man, no do I wish to.
But if he does not fill my glass in the next 30 seconds I will disown him for sure

Roy,

That is not what you told me. You told me you couldn't wait to pay his next 3 bar tabs. Wasn't that you?

Well Barry, I'm dumbfounded as to how you could 'retire' and still be in your 30's... ?? It sounds like you're here on a permanent basis like so many of us in our 50's & 60's so in response to your original question - if you don't play golf, enjoy motorcycle trips or do a lot of fishing then I suppose you will be resigned to spending a lot of time with Roy.

Not that Roy is a bad guy, I truly enjoy his company, but you definitely need to find something to occupy your ample time while in Udon. I 'retired' (in the Philippines) at the age of 39 and after attending school for a couple semesters I went to work. I found this was the most productive way of staying away from the 'evils of drink' and to keep my sanity.

Good luck and welcome to Udon. 8)

He is retiring at age 30? please teach me Master Yoda.
I am 42, and I am going to have to go work in Iraq or Afghanistan to have a chance at something close to that.
Lottery right? yea, it has to be the Lottery.
Please for my sanity tell me it was the Lottery.

There isn't as much to do here for someone who is active. It's not like back home where you could participate in numerous outdoor activities. Like someone said, if you're not into something like golf, biking or fishing, there isn't much else.

Some retired guys here are very busy with their lives - especially the ones who have families. Once you start a family and have a house and kids and dogs etc. , life becomes very busy.

The alternative is work. If I didn't work I wouldn't have much to do. I like to exercise, play football on Mondays, see the odd movie, go shopping. But, to be honest I get most of that done on my day off anyway.

At 30 you have at least half your life ahead of you, so bear that in mind. It's different if you are retired at 60, you can just relax and enjoy 'the ride'.

So if you don't find yourself a family, a vocation (work or voluntary stuff), or a serious hobby (ies), then you might find yourself getting bored in a year or two (or less!!).

Be careful though. Remember the saying 'The Devil finds work for idle hands'. This is true.

I will leave you with one of my favorite movie quotes (the last line)

Frank Towns: Why give people false hope?
Liddle: Come on man. Most folks spend their whole lives holding on to hopes and dreams that are never going to come true but they hold on to them. Why are you going to give up on them now when you need them most?
Frank Towns: You are assuming I'm one of those people who has hopes and dreams.
Liddle: I find it hard to believe that a man who learns to fly never had a dream.
Frank Towns: Look, how can I let those people build that plane when I don't believe it will work? And, every day they waste trying to build it brings them one day closer to dying.
Liddle: I think a man only needs one thing in life. He just needs someone to love. If you can't give him that, then give him something to hope for. And if you can't give him that, just give him something to do.

Name the movie.

Ps. Good luck Barrybowfinger btw

Nick

Flight of the Phoenix (2004)

ok,ok. I googled it. 8)

"Like someone said, if you're not into something like golf, biking or fishing, there isn't much else." Well, there are trips to places like Chiang Mai, Phuket, Ko Chang, Laos, Cambodia, Viet Nam, Malaysia, etc. plus reading good books and browsing the internet. Too little time to become bored.

'Welcome To Udon The Retiree's Town'.

When you near your retiring age why not consider the town of Udon Thani in northeastern Thailand (Issan) a large sized town with a fairly large retiree population, choice of most of your favourite foods you loved back home, come and enjoy the delightful ancient ruins, take a ride round town, spend time with 'Roy',amble around the Modern Shopping complex, browse the selection of medications in 'Boots' the chemists, spend some more time with Roy,get emersed in the atmosphere at the night markets (if its not to late in the evening), maybe a little fishing, or alternatively spend time with Roy,take motorcycle rides (providing your hip joints are good) tour the province, breath in the fresh air, take an early morning fast paced walk around 'Nom Prajak park' ,how about spending time with Roy,Go shopping at Tescos and enter the numerous 'Free Prize draws' in the hope of winning something, you could walk through 'Farang alley' eye some ladies, sit down please for some refreshments (with Roy) learn how to use a computer in pops computer shop, learn the 'Lingo' at AUA,Buy a Pick-up truck(in silver like Roys) take a trip to immigration in Nong Khai when your visa extension is looming for some 'fun' and lively chit-chat and a laugh-a-minute jolly good time with the 'happy-go-lucky' immigration officials, back to Udon before night fall to enjoy some time-out with Roy,try to Play Pool, try to Play Golf,go diving in Nong Sim lake and ermmmmm ...and when you get bored give Roy a call and have a little drinky poo and some light banter.

Exactly my point. I was just listing 'some' of the things you can do.

Although I don't consider going to Phuket, Malaysia etc. as being vocations or hobbies. They are more like vacations. People need something more to keep them occupied all year round. I guess if you are wealthy then traveling around SE Asia is as good as any, but then if he was wealthy, he wouldn't need to ask us lot for help.

Good call with the film btw.

Opposite the Robinson's complex but down the little lane way beside what is now Bar Berry 2007 and to the left. Follow your ears and listen for Hotel California/Linkin' Park or, "Pay bar me mai?"

Bowfinger if your feeling a little bored you can do a search and see the joys of water pump and water tank maintenance and repair that should keep you busy for a few years ;)
