I could only answer your first question, as the labor rules in Thailand do not make any difference whether you get paid, receive benefits in natura or work voluntary, ALL ACTIVITIES which could be just like a job need a work permit.
Even if you would just sit in a classroom and observe, helping out a friend in his company, doing some small construction work in a friends place etcetera....
Before doing voluntary work you need to obtain a non-B visa, work permit and a teachers license (for the last two the place of work could assist you) they could also send you an invitation for the job to obtain a non-B visa at the Thai embassy.
Of course if you do ignore the rules, you might get a way with it, but TIT so better be well prepared.
Officially when opening a school by yourself, you do need the above mentioned as well a license from the education ministry or the provincial education office (Udon), a letter of conduct provided by the immigration office in BKK and from the police in Udon. When promoting publicly to locals (flyer, banners and other marketing tools) you need to obtain a license from the local police office as well.
If you have a background in education or hold a M-Ed you should not have a problem to obtain these docs.

I am not trying to be nasty,but your lack of capitalization in your post makes me think your qualifications might be suspecttonkaponte wrote:hi all

I'm sure there are many schools around town that would be happy to have a volunteer teacher.
However you need polish up your grammar and spelling if you're going to teach English.
im = I'm
english = English
posistion = position
i = I
Question marks, capital letters and full stops missing. Also a space after a comma is required.

in reply to above
tefl course already done,as it is a requirement in most countrys.in process of doing a cisco( i.t) course.
the way i type my posts and replys is the same as i send text messages...ie no grammer.just lazy when its not needed,when i teach or work it is in a professional manner so use correct grammer etc.
thanx for replys about visa,trolls etc
im a different person when not in daily suit mode,when with friends i talk and act how they have always known me,wear jeans and sweater,get stuck in,get drunk,im just another ov the boys again,
work is different!
personally i love 2 hang around with people who dont have 2 watch there p's n q's. too many stuffy people where i work.talk shop 24hrs.
would rather be easy going than just a suit.

Going back to the op...Why do you want to teach English for free anyway?
Is it because you now have a TEFL and you just want some experience?
Or do you just want to help people out?
Either way I think you will find plenty of willing students who want to study for free here.
You don't have to worry about a work permit. If you're not charging money, no-one is going to check up on you. Don't worry about what other people say on this forum. The law says you MUST have a wp if you work, but no-one is going to be checking up on you - trust me.

Even the topic title "Voluntary English" is grammatically incorrect, and I don't claim to be a teacher or have completed a TEFL course. If you can't write a coherent paragraph, should you really be working with children teaching language?
With some of the bad press teaching has been getting, I think you'll find considerable more screening is going-on before you're let in the classroom.
If nothing else, please try and brush-up on some of your basic grammar skills.

Give the guy a break will you
He is just attempting to do something nice while in Thailand.
I do not mean this disrespectfully to any teachers out there but if you are giving free lessons in basic English to novices you hardly need to be Noel Coward.
I do agree with Oldfield that the chances of someone checking up on you are remote to say the least.

I commend you for your philanthropic attitude - good for you.
However, I reckon your English 'aint up to scratch to be an English teacher.
Answer one simple question:
What's the difference between..
'If I were...' and 'If I was...'
1= if i were in udon,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH
i am not in udon
2=if i was in udon,etc
i may have been in udon
i may not have been
3=in written terms they differ,but in spoken, alot use them inter-changeably
[/b]
