Thai wife

I only seem to encounter it on this forum but see many references to TW or
TG/F, I assume this refers to Thai wife and Thai Girl friend.
Is this because the person has multiple wives from other nationalities?
Hence the need to prefix "wife" with her nationality ? How do people introduce their wife to others "this is my Thai wife Tittiporn" ?
Just seems strange to me, because normally here, if she is of Asian appearance one would assume she is Thai.

maybe they realize how old we are, and senile, they don't want us to get them confused or be embarrassed about them having a non thai wife.

love it when people in usa from obvious african decent, call themselves 'african americans', gee, i would of never guessed. so i will now be referred to as a 'uk american' anything else and i'll feel offended.

obviously i haven't got a clue, just bored and happy it's accepting posting, so far that is.

I suppose it is like stating the obvious....i do use the term 'Mrs' often though.

I usually introduce my wife in person by her name....she doesn't want me to use her name her on the forum....soooo I use the term TW as others do. If I had a TG/F I wouldn't even mention her here or in public, I'd hide her at LA's place.......HELLOOOOO REE!!!!!!!

Just a minor correction for LA... you can't be a/an UK-American because that would indicate two countries. African-Americans refer to a continent and country, so, you'd have to be a European-American.

In the US in is quite common to refer to ourselves using Two countries. I am Polish American, please don't call me European American. Perhaps you heard of the Irish Americans, Mexican Americans, etc etc. The only group excluded are the African Americans who unfortunately don't know what country their ancestors came from and simply say Africa.

On the other hand please don't refer to my children as Amerasians. They are Eurasians.

My kids simply say they are American or say "Part Thai" so I guess it doesn't really matter.

I am sorry if I've upset your applecart. I would think being called "uncle tom" would be separatist enough.

All joking aside, I fully understand the references to Polish-American, Irish-American, etc., in actuality, I suppose I should be referred to as Italian-American but have NEVER used this term. Not because I'm embarrassed or ashamed but because I was born in the United States and consider myself an AMERICAN... nothing more, nothing less.

Funny that many call themselves American until they do something wrong or possess a different viewpoint and then officialdom uses the ethnicity card to taint and alter the perception of the individual in question negatively, and quick as a flash, you become somewhat non-American, for example Italian-American and so on.

For example: The FBI made a massive point at the time over the spy Robert Hanssen who was born in Chicago, Illinois, to a Lutheran family of mixed Danish and German descent, which explained to some his penchant for Russian money. I'm pretty sure there are other good examples, particularly from the McCarthy period.

There are a truck load of acronyms used on forums such as TG/F and TW etc., I guess it’s an American influence as they appear to love em and I had heard NASA has acronyms for acronyms.

In my early forum days they boggled the mind.

In the real world, I for one, would never introduce my wife as my Thai wife and I can’t recall any of my friends doing it.

I have certainly done a few things 'wrong' in my 67 years, and periodically disagree or hold a different viewpoint, but I have (as stated previously) NEVER referred to myself as ANYTHING but an American. To be sure, I have NEVER "become somewhat non-American, for example Italian-American"... So, if you were referring to me in your post, please explain.

I am delighted to be called "Uncle Tom" by my thai and Lao friends. Its simply a sign of respect by younger people because of my age. Others closer to my age also call me that.

The point I am making is that in the States we may use two countries to identify ourselves eg Polish American. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, served in the Coast Guard, worked as a Civil Servant for the military and spent 24 years as a Foreign Service Officer. I am grateful to be a American and had these opportunities.

I won't confuse the topic further, But I am also Irish American and German American. Its great having all these ethnic holidays to celebrate.

No one telling you what to call yourself - no need to say that I can't call my self a Polish American when appropriate.

No, I'm not pointing the finger at you, your post IMO highlighted the tendency (not just an American trait), to bring up a persons ethnicity if they do something wrong or in the case of Hanssen, who because of his actions stopped being an all-American FBI agent and became un-American i.e. Danish-German American because it is easier to assert wrongness if you can downgrade the person.

Apologies if you took my comments personally, no intention of doing so.

I refer to my wife as TW on this forum to show association to a lot of the topics being discussed, and I suspect some of the posters on here do the same, but as BanDung Dero pointed out in the real world we probably all always introduce our partners by their name. In my case I always introduce my wife and daughter by their given first names no matter how difficult that may be for the receiver to pronounce.

The double nationality using is not a Yankee thing (and I always thought it was Afro American). Here it is common for especially the Asian races to be refered to as Chinese Kiwi, Thai Kiwi or a general classification of Asian Kiwi's. I don't have a problem with it when it is used mostly by that group to associate themselves as while Kiwiland is the most beautiful country in the world

to live in (OK Aussie a distant 2nd) a lot of these people still have a strong association to their birth countries and enjoy the double nationality tag. However the racist crap kicks in here also when that new Kiwi gets in trouble. Then the media, the whitey people who think they have some god given right over especially Asian and African races, and one particular race in this country have great delight in stripping them of the Kiwi part and they become an Asian or F**ken Asians. Its pure racism as the amazing thing with the Asian races in this country is they have the lowest crime rates and highest academic achievements. They are a pleasure to have as Kiwi Asians when compared to some members of the other 2 dominant races here.
