Buy a bicycle in Udon?

There's quite a few bike shops in Udon now. I normally use the shop near the Complex. Peter, the owner, speaks English.
I am sure he can set you up. Lots of bikes to choose from

There is also a bike shop inside Home Pro on the ring road or a couple second hand bike shops selling some decent looking stuff just past the airport (if heading into town from the airport). Also if you go to the brick house bar on Soi Sampan they are selling a nearly new fat bike. Its parked putside the front.

Last year I bought a very good used Japanese lightweight aluminium frame bike for 5000 baht from a shop next door to the SiriGrand Hotel on Benchang Road. They had a good selection of bikes.

Bought mine in home pro ,mountain bike with all the little extras including larger pedals (ones that came with it found a bit too small) just under 7000 baht ,had it about a year couldn’t be happier

Peter is definitely not out of business. If you are at the stoplight by the Complex, facing the bus station, turn right. Go to the 5-way intersection. There's a PTT gas station, Kasikorn Bank & LEO distributor on the right. The bike shop in across the street on the corner. He has many makes, styles & prices

Lots of choice for bikes around town, what I find difficult to find are any frame sizes larger than M. Does anyone know of a place that sells larger frame sizes L or XL.

The shop I've mentioned has large frame bikes. Better bike frames are measured in inches from pedal to the seat base. I'm 6ft. tall, My bike is 22 inch. Many in stock. Peter rides bikes & is a nice guy. He'll help you get what you need

Tried a shop out towards the ring road in the general Home pro area (at the cross roads where the 4x4 accessory shop is with large digi-billboard) and that was a little better, around the 17k price range but the fella was a bit vague when I asked about the brand - part Italian, part Chinese, assembled in Thailand. ...

That's maybe Nick Bike Center on Wearsai Road. He does my pushbike rebuilds and refurbs and knows his stuff.

Can also try the sports shop in central plaza next to pizza hut and Sizzler. They do Trek, GT and few cheaper brands.

I believe there's only one 5 way intersection in Udon Thani aside from those in the traffic circles. This bike shop is NOT in any of the circles. There's a Kasikorn Bank just opposite the bike shop. A PTT gas station is located right next to the bank. This 5 way intersection is located on Prajak Rd which runs from the train station, past Central Plaza and all the way to Tung Sri Mung Park. The bike shop is exactly where Muni said it's located and is open 6 days a week. I've been a customer of Peter (owner) for more than 10 years now. I'm also very familiar with Bike Corner as well. Bike Corner is the local dealer for Pro Bike in Bkk.

I think that would depend on what you consider to be decent. I would suggest you visit the bike shop at the 5 way intersection on Prajak Rd. The shop is just opposite the ONLY PTT filling station downtown. the owner's name is Peter and he speaks excellent English.
