Re: Thai food
Reason #2978:. Lots of food sold these days in the grocery stores ไม่มีผงซูรส.......a fair number of restaurants post signs as well
Re: Thai food

Can be difficult getting a good feed in the more regional towns.
When I lived in Nongbualamphu years ago, pre Tesco days, getting a loaf of decent bread was impossible. Most of the dishes ordered out had meat that was just gristle and fat.
Sticky rice & bbq is a good option
Poached chicken & rice another
Chicken soup noddle good also. Tell them no feet just breast if you are a bit fussy.
Mango & Sticky rice for desert
I think Harry has opened up a cafe up Bundung way which has Thai & Farang food. Might worth a visit

Kai yad sai ( stuffed omelette with pork ) one of my favorites , the last one made me gag though as it tasted of fish sauce ,why make a pork dish that tastes of fish ? Best one was in ban dung ,tasted more mexican than thai. Pad Thai can be so hit and miss as well .

I always found the pork all a bit too oily with some obvious abuse of ketchup... or maybe it was oil from a can of plah-kapong?! I prefer the kai jeow moo sab with less meat.papafarang wrote: ↑September 29, 2020, 8:51 amKai yad sai ( stuffed omelette with pork ) one of my favorites , the last one made me gag though as it tasted of fish sauce ,why make a pork dish that tastes of fish ? I also use that bottled water to top off my solar battery banks rather than pay a high price for distilled water. If you want to check the bottled RO water for minerals, boil some in a shiny pan until the pan is boiled dry and see if there are any mineral deposits in the bottom of the pan. If the RO process removes all the minerals, I trust that other impurities are also removed.
ADDED - When living in my Jomtien condo, I bought water in the large white translucent plastic bottles. One day when removing the sealed lid, I saw something in the water. It was mosquito larvae swimming around. From then on I bought cases of the glass small bottles. The water I now buy here is in light blue clear plastic bottles.

Re: Thai food
Not sure where your partner is taking you, sounds like the "Soup Kitchens" opposite the hospital. OK, they don't look that flash but I have never had a bad meal in any of them. Also, there are any number of up market, air conditioned Thai restaurants all over Ban Dung including the top end of the Phen road then at the fish markets.K1w1nev wrote: ↑September 28, 2020, 8:47 amI've been living in BAN DUNG Thailand now for coming up 5 years and i've yet to find any thai any of the food they always rave about to me it's just crap cooked in filthy kitchens and i end up on the shitter for two days if i even try a mouthful i hate the **** i cook my own my question is how do other farangs get on.
Talking about drinking water:- Never bought a bottle for home use! Over 19 years been catching and storing sweet, clean rain water off my roof. OK, there is some preparation one must go through annually but it's easy, only takes a couple of hours to clean gutters, storage jugs and filters. Don't start the storage process until the first of the VERY heavy monsoon rains have passed (end of July, early August), top off end of Sept = I have at least 2 years supply.

Re: Thai food
Never had any issues with eating Thai food, many great places around the town. Maybe years of working in Africa has strengthened my stomach
Re: Thai food
We were sat at the Big C underpass traffic lights the other day & Mrs N was gazing longingly at a roadside somtam stall when she saw the vendor at the back picking at someone else’s feet. A customer walked up & she went straight from the feet to the bowl of shredded papaya.
Optimistically she was performing a clean, hygienic pedicure or pessimistically she was scraping the dirt from the nails & scratching verrucas.
Either way the lights went green & we didn’t dine

Re: Thai food
I started cooking by myself here in Udon 21 years ago because I could not eat from not professional cook(sick so many times).in italy to open a small restaurant at the beach I had to undergo a test with 7 people in front of me asking any kind of questions about food.(REC)here, in most places, hygiene is zero and I have a week stomach, so I only eat at my place.Alberto.
Re: Thai food
You forgot to point out that the somtam maker did wipe her hands at least twice on her grease-encrusted and grubby apron AND again with the dirty dish rag before she wiped her nose with the back of her bare hand and dug into the shredded papaya bucket.Niggly wrote: ↑October 2, 2020, 11:21 amWe were sat at the Big C underpass traffic lights the other day & Mrs N was gazing longingly at a roadside somtam stall when she saw the vendor at the back picking at someone else’s feet. Re: Thai food
I know from experience that with the damage chillis do to my mouth/tongue/stomach and eventually rear end, that a poor microscopic innocent bacteria hasn't got a chance against that.. Most of the time any germs (and flavour) have been boiled out of the stuff anyway which is why they have to use so much friggin' msg or fish sauce to put some kind of flavour back in. The biggest problem I see is not the food its the plates etc that it get served on. Virtually all roadside shacks use scratched plastic plates/dishes,, which are a breeding ground for bacteria, then due to having no running water they get "washed" in a 5 gallon pot of cold water which rarely if ever gets changed (top 6 ins must be clean coz all the food particles have sunk to the bottom)
Re: Thai food
Nope, definitely feet to papaya. There was no opportunity for any cross contamination from what I saw before the lights changed.
