Cheap Charlies
Cheap Charlies
After some reading on another thread that seemed to me was starting to get off topic ,a little,I thought I would open this thread to make my comments!
I am in agreement with Arjay and LA,in that I think it is prudent to get value for my money!
Plus ,out of principle,I don't allow myself to be flagrantly ripped off if I can avoid it!Which means I don't go to double priced venues, eat and drink in resturants/bars that obviously overcharge or stop at police money stops on the open highway!
I believe the term ''cheap charlie''is used by many ''merchants''to shame or encourage some people to be ''suckers'' and sometimes used by others, about others' to make themselves feel important,a serious lack of self esteem for the latter.
Now ,I have been out and about with some people that I thought were ''cheap charlies''!Usually they are the type that take actions to avoid participating in or offering to share in the paying of a mutual bill! They are the same ''bums''here as they were back in farangland!Once is always enough with these ''bums'' and I will more than likely let them know my feelings!

as i see it , there are 2 variables to spending my money. firstly there is the value for money variable, secondly theres the desirability factor, something may be overpriced but i want it anyway , so i buy it. both these elements are purely personal and i always have the choice. as like most people here ,im living on a fixed income, when you take into account that income has been reduced by some 10% in the last few months with the exchange rate, add to this inflation increasing in the same period, i for one am now a little more careful where i spend my money. any business man with half a brain should realise this, and if he wanted a successful business would take these factors into account, instead of insulting the farang population of udon by calling us cheap charlies.
I think a classic 'CC' is the type that talks to you at a bar or party and advises he/she has saved, typically 1 to 5 baht, by buying their goods/drink at a certain place else, spends ages in the pisshole because they know it is their turn to buy the next drinks in a round.
They always seem to let you know that they get the 3 baht nok air flights also:D
Maybe after a year they would have saved enough to extravagantly splash out on a coffee for 60 baht

Also forgot to mention the CC who sits at the coffee shop opposite the complex before it opens, the front right table as you look at the coffee shop who grabs the Bangkok post immediately it is delivered to the coffee shop to save him 25 baht but at the same time has an empty cup of coffee at the table, probably spent a good 30 mins sweating it out in the heat just to get a free read and not buy when the complex opens.
Come out of your CCC (cheap charlie closet) and own up

Lets just say I know an Australian who fits into this category, loaded back in Oz but their only conversation is about having saved bahts in one's and two's and who takes his own whisky to bars and yet still complains about the price of ice and soda to put in it.saint wrote:pom, you started your post with the words, i think.?????? now im confussed
I think this is how a CC should be, although I might be in the minority and, maybe there is a thriving social life here in Udon with monthly meetings between fellow Charlies.
When next in town will bring my 1 baht coins and offer them to a CC if he or she is finding it difficult to get drunk whilst in possession of a 100 baht for the whole night

Pi$$ing in public would be an offense of some sorts, let alone the damage done to the budding blooms, spend the 3 baht and use the facility's on offer.trubrit wrote:Well I think the title CC should go to the guy who advised me against using the toliet in the night market as they charge 3 baht, and instead suggested I go for a wee in the flower bed outside the hospital. Don't know if he was a forum member, but if he is HI

Now that is the original CC.pompui wrote:Also forgot to mention the CC who sits at the coffee shop opposite the complex before it opens, the front right table as you look at the coffee shop who grabs the Bangkok post immediately it is delivered to the coffee shop to save him 25 baht but at the same time has an empty cup of coffee at the table, probably spent a good 30 mins sweating it out in the heat just to get a free read and not buy when the complex opens.

Yeah that was a classic..Lee wrote:I think the CC award should go to the guy (not mentioning any names) who was complaining about a 5 baht increase on a bowl of noodles. He later went on to complain about the price of bottled water at a local bar, I believe he was charged a grand total of 40bt
I think another Classic CC trick is the CC that calls your mobile and lets it ring once or twice then rings off knowing that you will instantly call them back.
There is a differance between getting VFM(VAlue for money) and being tighter than a camels ar$e in a sand storm(cc)
Good topic too NkStan.
I posted a reply under the topic 'Mojo raises prices' earlier today. That topic has been deleted. It was referring to the cheap charlies, but someone in their wisdom decided it was maybe a little hot, so the whole thread was removed. Now we have another topic on basically the same thing. Are we getting under someones skin?.

CC is all those stupid people, that always a making complains about their bills.
Thailand is a cheap country to live in and I cant understand why there are someone who always have to make complains. But sometimes its a BIG laugh to watch.
3 bath for a piss wow pang mak mak. Better to pay 2000 bath for pissing in the flower bed, if the police catched him.
ekstra 5 bath for a bowl of noddle soup. Did any speak about inflation.
As I wrote before. I always pay with a smile, except if I cacth them cheating.
Life is great, Thailand is great, and there will always be CC around.

CC = Cheap Charlies, or Careful Chaps?
Bearing in mind, that the Dollar and the Pound has depreciated in the region of 20% over the past year, and I would guess that there are a lot of us on fixed incomes, its not surprising that people have begun to watch their outgoings.
I do realise, that there is some people, that even if they had unlimited finances, they would still complain, and still try to freeload.
However, I believe that, not knowing which way the money market is going, it could be that some people think that its better to tighten the belt a little!
Also to be taken into consideration, is, food is said to have also risen by roughly 50%, add that to the 20% devaluation in the "money in your pocket", that amounts
to a substantial difference in one's disposable income.

well let me say this I am a cheap charlie but I am not looking for any one to pick up my tab
at a loss of almost 25% of my income due to exchange rates yes I also have to be conservative in spending my income. so now I am more critical of restaurants gauging you by raising prices and giving smaller portions for your Baht.

Eat indoors at home is the simple answer from now on.RALPHCUSENS wrote:CC = Cheap Charlies, or Careful Chaps?

i think we are blessed in udon with many good restuarants at realistic prices, both western and thai, i tend to eat out several times a week, lunchtimes or in the evening and dont have any problems with what im charged. the whole point is why pay over the top? would you buy a new motorbike or truck at say 25% over the list price, of course not. i dont mind paying phuket prices when im in phuket, but i refuse to pay those prices in udon.
