The Things You Miss From Home.

Post by Irish Alan » January 17, 2009, 12:36 am

As much as I love life here there are times when I miss some silly things, mostly food related. So apart from obvious things like friends and family, is there anything that you miss from your home country?

I was thinking of food at first then added a few more.

I will not provide explanations… So in no particular order, here goes.

· McVities Digestives.
· KP Dry Roasted Peanuts.
· Yorkshire Relish sauce.
· Cabbage, potatoes and corned beef.
· Dunnes Stores Mature Irish cheddar cheese.
· Road courtesy.
· Johnston, Mooney and O’Brien batched loaf.
· Cuisine de France baguettes/bread rolls with aforementioned cheddar cheese.
· A walk in the Phoenix Park on a frosty morning.
· John Motson’s Match of The Day commentary.

I can help on one of the items missing. that is corned beef. I am not referring to the can type either. Corn beef can be made easily at home and all of the ingredients can be had locally except tenderquik and that can be ordered. PM an I will send recipe.

More good choices......but whilst reading Alans list of food starting from the top and going down the list i had food in my mind then read out "Road Courtesy"...and i don't know why i am admitting it but i had to think about what sort of food or brand/type of food that was..could be an Irish thing i thought to my self....

then it clicked.. #-o

For me, foremost is being able to buy a decent car without breaking the bank, and a close second, being able to get a choice of wines and whiskeys, again at prices to suit my pocket. But you do get used to doing without them and the benefits of living here far outweigh the losses. You have to go back and bang your head on the wall occasionally to appreciate what a good feeling it is when you stop. ](*,)

Got a couple of PM's so will just post the recipe for corned beef. I do not use brisket and use a good roast. Rounds make good beef. Also look on the Morton's site and you can find more. Pastrami also and more.

Try Nissian Market for tenderquik. Doubt they have it but I bet can get it. It is a product by Morton and comes in a 4 or 5 pound bag and last a long time as you only use a few tablespoon.

5 Tbs. Morton Tender Quick*
2 Tbs. brown sugar
1 Tbs. ground black pepper
1 tsp ground paprika
1 tsp ground bay leaves
1 tsp ground allspice
1/2 tsp garlic powder

In a small bowl mix the Morton Tender Quick and the remaining ingredients and spices. Rub all of the mixture into all sides of the brisket.

Place the brisket in plastic bag and tie the end securely. Refrigerate and allow the meat to cure 5 days per inch of meat thickness. Turn the package over once or twice a day. I would not go over two inch thick meat as it takes too long and I was not happy with the results.

You can change up a few of the spices to more suit your taste. By the way you then will take it out and put on a slow boil until it is tender. Takes a while to get there.

Really easy.
